View Full Version : Naming mp4s on a PSP Memory Stick (Menu name, NOT file name)

I've got software that lets me rip my DVDs into mp4 format so that I can watch 'em on my PSP. Which is great 'cause I didn't really want to shell out another $30 for movies I already own.

I figured out how to modify the thumbnail so that I can use a poster instead of the first frame of the flick and it looks *slick*. But I can't figure out how to change the name of the movie in the video menu.

The software I used simply takes the name you see when you pop it into your PC and look at it in Explorer as the movie title. That works fine for "A New Hope," but "The Matrix" shows "The Matrix 16x9LB North America," which is a bit much.

Anybody done this? I've done quite a bit of Googling to no avail.

EDIT: This isn't about naming the file in that bizarre format or putting it into the proper directory. I already know how to do that. This is about what I see under the "Video" menu.

Filename should be MNV00001.mp4 (or MNVXXXXX.mp4, where the Xes are number values) and should be placed in the folder PSP:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01\

The PSP should then recognize the videos.

Perhaps I wasn't clear - this isn't a question about how to name the file itself, but about how to name what I see under the Video menu.

I see the movie just fine, I just want to change the description from the long winded "The Matrix 16x9 North America" to just "The Matrix"

Careful, as they say...

It can be done but it all depends on what software you are using. I use ffmpegX on my Mac and there is an option that lets you add a name to the video file so it shows when you are looking at it in the PSP's video menu.

You probably could change it in the header of the file, though it'd be really easy to mess that up.

But who cares really, when I can make a backup copy before I fiddle?

The software I'm using to convert the videos doesn't have the option - believe me, I've looked. And since I've invested money into it I'm loathe to abandon it for something which is, really, minor.

Thanks, Ed, I'll try the manager software at

Apparantly it's useful for transferring movies already ripped between the PC and the PSP, handling the renaming of files for you (not that *that's* a huge deal either).

The only other item I found out yesterday was that it was UTF-8 encoded in the header of the mp4. Although I understand what that's getting at I have no idea how I'd tackle it. PSP Video Manager might just do it.

The software is nifty in it's way, and you can edit the movie name on either the PC or PSP side, but as soon as you move/copy/refresh the names revert back to their original naming structure. So the search continues.
