View Full Version : I got SNES fever

For the past couple years I semi-seriously asked myself from time to time... should I get a Super Nintendo? Finally I buckled down.

Man, I'm just looking forward to reliving good ole memories (Ken Griffey Baseball, NBA Live 98, etc.) and experiencing gems I never played back in the day (Super Metroid, Legend of Zelda, etc.)

I already got a system on the way, and about... hmm, 40 games coming?? Back when me and my bro had a SuperNES we maxed out at around 22 games I think. LOL, I'm gonna have more SNES games in like one night than I ever did in 8 years! (the amount of years we originally owned the SNES before giving it to our little cousins)

Anyway, this new gaming passion has lit a fire under my ass. For years I have been focusing on Saturn, and to a lesser extent the Dreamcast (BTW just bought Cannon Spike and Gunbird 2 -- woo hoo), but the SNES... man, lotsa good memories from my childhood. It's funny how decisions suddenly come about. It was like one morning I woke up and I thought to myself "Damn it, I'm getting a SNES again"

Here's to good times :D

Yeah that happend to me about 6 months ago.

I still really like the SNES but it's not the same as playing it 12 to 15 years ago. Some games still stacked up good like Final Fantasy 3 and Mario Kart but a lot of others just seem really dated now :( especially the super FX games starfox, stunt race fx etc.

I guess if you want to collect for it thats a different story again but look out cause a lot of the good games, especially RPG's are going for over $100. I can afford it these days cause im no longer a school kid but still it seems like a waste to spend all that $$$ on old games.

I dont know if i should be saying this but your probably just better off setting your self up with ZSNES/ROMS and a SmartJoy so you can use the SNES pad on your PC. Also check out zbattle.net its a server that lets you vs people over the internet.

I have one also. I used to have like 15 SNES games, over the past 4 months I've gotten like 6 more!

Are you planning on starting a new thread about it every single day or something? What was wrong with your other one?

If your looking forward to play sportgames like basketball, baseball or hockey on the SNES something is seriously wrong LOL

Haha just kidding ;) Personaly I hate sportgames, but there are exceptions of course. I actually got my first SNES like 1½ years ago. Always wanted one when I was a kid, but my parents said no :(
Anyway, enjoy the SNES. Alot of great games to check out!

Agreed. I'm happy that you are going to like playing your SNES, but this is almost the same as your other thread, and it's not like anything new has happened, you still haven't even gotten the system yet!

This kinda stuff should be in a blog.

See if you can pick up a Super Wildcard or a Super ProFighter. (Usually quite a few on eBay). Then you can play ROM images directly on the SNES console. Wildcards are the better option. They come in CD and Floppy Disk versions.

What's wrong with another thread? Does that break another DP rule I suppose?

Well I am guessing that once he gets it ,their will be another thread" I got my SNES and now I am playing it! It kicks so much ass!". And then the people that posted how great the SNES is in his other two threads will post in there, and will again point out how great the SNES is and that he should buy super metroid and Zelda, and FF and Mario kart and blah blah blah.

I understand some of the new people posting these kind of threads, but for us old timers we have seen it time and time again, so forgive us if we get a little cranky when these pop up every couple of months from new members. LOL

I can't really get into SMW, but I'm finding more obscure games to love, plus I'm trying to finally pick up the US releases of Contra III and Super Castlevania IV. I emulated Contra a bit last night and I realized the overhead sections have a bit more going on than I had previously thought (I still think that rotating the whole level is pretty silly, but hey, it beats some of the stunts you're likely to run into with a licensed game).

Huh, I just thought I was going to assume the topic title had been edited, and the first post.

Wow, am I relinquishing my status as Most Ornery Forumer? LOL

But yes, you're right, it's not really in the spirit of the rules.

Emulators suck!

and, btw, are worthless in a collection.... who wants to look at a bunch of stoopid ROMs?

just get a system or 15 (at Gwill regularly by me...for $5 or less) and some games and have a BALL!

S-VHS capable too!

Looks GREAT on a 32" LCD!

Well the intention of this thread will be realized in due time. I know from the offset it looks like a "double post" so to speak, but I actually planned from the get go to use this thread as my "SNES experience/impressions" -- I will be posting thoughts on the games I get and play, right here in this thread.

That's how it's going to differentiate from my previous one. So I understand some of you getting cranky, but trust me when all is said and done this thread will be vastly different from the previous one.

I do have a method to my madness :)

Oh, somebody once challenged Abe Lincoln to a duel, and according to the established rules the challenged party got to pick the weapons and the setting. The 'running water' was "a part of the Ptomac River six feet deep." I can say that because, like Abe, I'm about six feet tall LOL

@ Steven: No hard feelings from me, I'm happy whenever somebody discovers a new system. Sorry to derail your thread (it's been fun though - I'll stop now, promise).

I would have to say that SNES lacked in certain areas, but all together it has most of my favorite games.

I have also gone through and played games that I remember having some of the most jaw dropping graphics and now they look beyond terrible.

As far as sports games go,I still get into games of NBA Live or NHL which were solid titles, but I'd honestly never pick up any of the SNES Madden titles, if you want football, I'd definately go for Sega Genesis (Mutant League Football, Joe Montana Football)

I would have to say GBA has started to become my new favorite system just because they continue to release SNES and NES games, and having Portable Final Fantasy III is something that I had wanted ever since the first time I played FFIII.

Man, I'm just looking forward to reliving good ole memories (Ken Griffey Baseball, NBA Live 98,

It's good to see that somebody else out there appreciates the NBA Live series on the Super Nintendo. I remember when I first played NBA Live '95, it was an incredible experience. It was like they bottled up the NBA and stuffed it inside this SNES cartridge. Originally, I just had NBA Live '95 and I never played any of the later versions. But after going retro, I ended up playing 96,97 and 98. NBA Live '98 is probably the best, but NBA Live '95 will always be remembered as the best hoops on the SNES, for me.

Still, I'm pleased that somebody else has given some pup to the NBA Live series on the SNES. By the way, have you tried NBA Live '96 on the Playstation? They basically took the NBA Live game from the SNES, and put the sprites onto a 3D court. I think it's absolutely outstanding, and much, much better than the polygon based NBA Live's that followed on the Playstation. Definitely try NBA Live '96 for the Playstation again, you will see what I mean.

P.S. You've never played Super Metroid? Man, is that going to be a trip for you.

Steven

I know, Super Metroid -- can't wait. Back in '94 I didn't care too much for it for whatever reason. Ever since 2001 or so, I been itching to play it through (as my gaming tastes matured over the years) same for Legend of Zelda

I never played Live 96 on PS1. My PS1 is actually at my ex's and I don't care enough of that system to get it back, and I also don't care to see her ever again, quite frankly :P

But yeah I loved me some NBA Live 95-98 on SNES. That engine was simply the most fun and best I ever played. The camera view... perfect. I can't wait to create my dream team and start an 82 game season with them.

You NBA in the know people may laugh but my starting five would be:

Chris Bosh
David Wood
Chris Taft
Kobe
Rex Walters

Some of my favorite players of all time 8-)

This is such garbage. Who cares if somebody repeats a post? Virtually, every post on this site could be labelled redundant by somebody, if you really try hard enough.

I ran into this issue some months ago, and when I stood up for the poster, I was THREATENED in no less terms, than that of losing my posting ability on this site by a moderator who decided it was redundant of me, to bring up a redundant fact about a redundant post. I was told that if I didn't like the rules, I could email Joe, and discuss them. I had no reply. I will post the PM's for those that wish. They were not short. Here was my first response from a moderator.

"If you have a problem with the way Joe runs the site I suggest you PM him about it instead of making stupid posts that waste everybody's time.

Please give us a break."

Who the moderator was makes no difference. It is a representation of the values of the site.

This was my email to Joe, with no response. It was received.

"Hi Joe,

I realize that you are very busy, so I won't take much of your time... If you have any with the new store. Good luck with that, and if it's anything like your site, you will have great success.

Any how, I probably will not have to explain who I am , as my "what is this? Germany circa 1940" post was locked. I just want to explain myself, and maybe help a few others.

I hope you read the thread, to understand what I said.

This site only gets better and better, and seems to attract more than just the hard core, room of doom, I have 6 copies of Maligai type of people now. That's great, and can only grow the hobby that everyone already here loves.

I also realize this is your domain, with your rules. But Joe, do you want to grow the site, or scare people away with 2000+ post cliques? It really seems to myself, and others that the moderators you have in charge only want to keep their "room of doom" status quo. That affects your site... Nay, your BUSINESS. Please note that I have been a member here for a couple years. I actually first found atariage through a friend, but find your site more tailored to my collecting habits, and your mebers more in tune to my type of collection.

I also refer every person I know who loves games to this site. I often think that is more important than posting my find of the week, or a picture of my gameroom.
I would be mortified if one of my associates or friends ever got treated the way some are by your moderators. While I may be banned anyway, I will certainly watch whom I refer.

It's one thing to lock a thread, it's another to do it with an insult, then lock it. that was what happened on the first thread.

The "Germany" thread was not only locked without discussion, but was left with an insult from your moderator *****. He also PM'ed me, and told me to basically keep my yap shut. I will forward that to you, if need be.

What was NOT acceptable, banning or not for myself, was the fact that he THREATENED me. Read the post. Regardless of whether it was a threat to me physically, or a threat to my site status, it was still a threat.

Not only was it a threat to me, but to anyone who agreed with the post. He basically said If you open your Yak Like Julian, you will be banned.

Is that what you want?

He also told me that if I disagreed with a policy, to email you. So, I did.

I realize I may be banned anyway. Sad, but I guess I can still peruse, like I used to. I hope not. You have some GREAT new members.

The only thing I would request from you, on a personal level, is a forum apology from ***** for the threat. I think that would be morally right. I also think it should be posted in the forum, where the insult and threat were posted. Not just for me, but for anyone else who was thinking along my lines. One even posted in the original thread before it was locked.

Again Joe, I love your site, but would sure love to see everyone welcome.

You may show this email to whomever you like.

Best Regards, Julian I. Scott"

Any way guys, I just thought this was pertinent. Joe, do you need donations for bandwidth? Is that the issue. Email or PM me. I'll help if that is the concern.

Regards, Julian

OK, I can understand a repeat post if some has already searched but failed to find a similar thread from a few weeks, moths or years ago. But posting 2 near-identical threads in as many days is simply unnecessary.
And I would imagine your thread was locked for the auto-Godwin more than anything else.

Because you're a cretin. End.

Well,. I won't bother insulting you. Nor mentioning that I put in a thoughtful, and well written post, that was from my heart. It wasn't disdainful to you, nor insulting to you. You only responded that way, and used a "retardicon" to respond to a post that was either too mind boggling , or too far off a wing you don't support.

I just think this hobby is blossoming, and it's sad to demoralize people for something as simple as a redundant post when they are just excited about their most recent "find". Holy crow! Shoot the guy because he loves his hobby and was a touch redundant. Which again, 99% of the posts here COULD be proved to be, if we wanted to be anal.

But I digress. you said the "end", and gave me a great "retardicon" to prove your point.

Steven

OK guys, take it to PM please if you wish to continue. Like I said, I'm going to post thoughts and impressions on all SNES games I play in the next couple months in this thread, and that's how it's going to be VASTLY different from the first one I made.

Devil, I understand your original post and trying to stand up for what you think is right, but believe me I took no offense to what Anagrama or any of the other posters said to me about repeating myself. You can't take everything so seriously, especially on a message board on the internet. (not talking about you as in you you but you as in you general you)

What the hell am I saying, lol. But yeah, please keep this topic on SNES. If it's something else, take it to PM.

I'm very anxious to get my new SNES and games... it should be here early next week, and then the mini-reviews can begin. Not to mention bliss 8-)
