I'm less interested in games that are "added" at this point.. (unless it's something from pre-85 :P) And more interested in games that are FIXED :)
So.. guess it's time to take a look eh? :D
Ok, this message is for all retro gamers. I have discovered a revolutionary technology that dramatically improves the sound of retro video games. Basically it revolutionizes the sound of all games that are in stereo. You know, the red and white plug? Normally video game systems will have a audio/video cable that has a red and white cable, along with the yellow cable for video. Or a S-Video cable for video. Well, for video game systems that are in stereo, with a red and white cable, you can dramatically improve that sound.
I'm talking totally freaking amazing! I heard people brag about it, but until I actually heard it myself, I couldn't freaking believe it. Absolutely amazing.
The technology is called Dolby Pro Logic IIx .
I'm not talking about Dolby Pro Logic II. I'm talking about IIx. This is a totally new processing technology that Dolby Laboratories has just come out with in the last year or so.
First Dolby had Dolby Surround sound. You might remember the first Jurassic Park for the Super Nintendo. This is one of the first games that I can remember that had Dolby Surround sound. Well, if you had a stereo reciever that featured Dolby Surround sound, then it was quite a treat when you first played Jurassic Park on the SNES. It was definitely a very huge improvement in video game sound. Then you had Dolby Pro-Logic. This was another big innovation that helped improve the sound of video games. Then with the Playstation 2, you had some games actually in DTS 5.1. With the XBOX, you got real time 5.1 decoding of Dolby Digital 5.1 With the Nintendo GameCube you got the first games encoded in Dolby Pro Logic II sound. This was pretty revolutionary in itself, because even without true 5.1 sound or a digital cable, you could get near 5.1 type sound from a regular red and white audio cable of the GameCube, as long as you had it hooked up to a stereo reciever that could decode the Pro Logic II information in that signal.
But as amazing as the GameCube's Pro Logic II is for non digital sound, Pro Logic IIx blows it out of the freaking water.
I'm talking a totally incredible thing here. You see, the GameCube games that are in Pro Logic II, have you to be programmed specially for the Pro Logic II sound. But Pro Logic IIx works on anything with a stereo signal.
Anything that has a red and white cable can benefit from the technology behind Pro Logic IIx. What is even better, is that if you actually have a 6.1 or 7.1 speaker setup, Pro Logic IIx will even convert the stereo sound to 6.1 or 7.1.!
It's totally freaking amazing. I could talk to you all day about the technology behind it, but the real proof is in the pudding. I'm telling you, if you have a Sega Saturn and Panzer Dragoon, then you have never heard the true potential of the sound of Panzer Dragoon, till you've heard it hooked up to a reciever with Dolby Pro Logic IIx. It basically transforms the regular sound of Panzer Dragoon into freaking Dolby Digital 5.1! I mean it really sounds that good. Just think about the best sound of any XBOX game in 5.1 . You know how good some of those XBOX games sound in 5.1, right? Well, just imagine a game like the original Sega Saturn's Panzer Dragoon with that sound?
UN FREAKING BELIEVABLE
I'm not playing around. I'm dead serious about this. So far, I've only really heard the Saturn with Pro Logic IIx, but I've been so freaking impressed with it, that I'm going to have to try all my two channel sound video game systems with this. I can imagine all PS1 games sounding just as amazing. As well as N64, Super Nintendo, Sega CD, Genesis, Turbografix, you name it. Any system that has a red and white cable on the audio/video output should see a dramatic improvement.
I played Vampire Savior on the Saturn and it was just as amazing. Incredible surround sound effects coming from all my back speakers. My Subwoofer just pumping away.
Amazing.
Now, you might be wondering, well what do I need to be able to experience this?
Well, the thing is, that you need a reciever that has the capabilities of Dolby Pro Logic IIx. Unfortunately this is a very new feature to Home Theater Recievers. It's only been around for about a year or so. So unless you have a brand new reciever, you would probably need to buy a new one. Also, even among very new recievers, very few of them actually have this. Soon, all new recievers will have it, but right now, it's hit and miss. But if you have a reciever that features Pro Logic IIx, then you are in luck. The next thing is you need at least a 5.1 speaker setup. 5 Speakers and 1 subwoofer. It's even better if you have a 6.1 setup or a 7.1 setup, in terms of speakers.
The reciever that I'm using is the Onkyo TX-SR502B. I got it from Circuit City for $221.99. It's a 6.1 reciever that can do all of the latest stuff. It can do Dolby Digital EX, it can do DTS ES, it can do all that crap. But most importantly, it can do Dolby Pro Logic IIx. I have a 6.1 speaker system hooked up to my Onkyo 502. I have my Saturn hooked up to it right now at the moment.
The sound that I get, while it is in Pro Logic IIx mode is just fantastic. It's more pronounced on some games than others. But it sounds good with all the games that I've tried so far. But Panzer Dragoon is just amazing. When I first heard it, I thought that Panzer had been redone in DTS ES 6.1 sound. I mean it really sounded like a DVD movie sounds.
Oh, by the way, on my Onkyo, it has several modes for Pro Logic IIx. One mode is Pro Logic IIx Movie, another is Pro Logic IIx Music, another is Pro Logic IIx Game.
Well, on my Onkyo, for some reason Pro Logic IIx Music sounds the best by far for the Saturn games that I have played.
Also, if you are a big fan of watching music videos on MTV, BET, VH1 and stuff like that, well Pro Logic IIx transforms that into an incredible experience as well. It's like listening to a SACD (Super Audio CD) or a DVD-Audio disk or something like that.
I was just watching MTV TRL a few minutes ago, and the sound was totally amazing.
I have read in various Home Theater message boards about people raving about Pro Logic IIx, and what it does for the sound of old movies and regular TV and stuff like that, and I actually got it for that, but I discovered that it's even more amazing with older video game systems.
You guys have gotta try this!!!!

Can't argue there but since it seems there is no 'glory' in fixing games - just adding them - I doubt most of the older ones will ever be fixed.

Sheesh! When was 0.64 released ??? About 2 weeks ago I sent a member of the Tombstone guys a batch of CDs with my request that he burn the full set of .63 ROMs for me. While the CDs were on the way to him, 0.64 came out. I emailed the guy, and asked that he put .64 on the CDs instead of 0.63. No problem. Now, not even a week after I've received the CDs back from him, 0.65 comes out??? I suppose I should be happy so much effort goes into the project and so much progress is made, but it sure is frustrating.

CD's eh... Dude I think it's time you requested them on DVD-R's, because a full set is now around 8-12 GIGS! x_x

The full set was 14 CDs. I haven't got a DVD drive yet, so CDs are the way to go.
As an aside, last night I tried my hand burning a VCD from a .avi file on my PC to view in my DVD player (on a TV). No dice. Thinking I did something wrong, I did further research and tried again tonight. Still no luck.
So I dug even deeper into things and learned that while Coby DVD-507 model DVD players did play VCDs, the newer firmware models DON'T. And of course I've got the newer firmware. I also can't hack the region-coding, although I don't really care about that right now.
So I've got 2 CD-Rs with last week's Friends and no way to view them on a TV. 8-(

It really isn;t that many cd-rs (at least not to me), I did a complete backup (minus the CHD hard disk files) and it maxed out at 8 cd-rs. Not that bad, since cd-rs are like 10 cents each while dvd-rs are still a few dollars each.

FYI Mars Matrix ROCKS!
But for the most part this update is pretty insignificant. One of the Mah-jong games was particularly disturbing, I'm pretty sure pre-teen girls were being featured.

heh go ahead... burn away ;) Like most of us, I've burned hundreds of cds for everything over the past couple of years. And believe you me that's exactly what I thought back in the days when Mame roms took up a whopping 3 cd's.. but then it just kept going up! And with replacement romsets constantly happening.. eventually you'll have to make a new set of cds (rather than just adding cd's with only the newer roms) and eventually before you know it, you'll have 50+ cd's with romsets from various mames! x_x ugh.. Not worth it imo.
DVD-R's bought in bulk cost a buck (or just under) each. And at 4.75 gigs a pop, it's just making more sense these days to use them for mame rom backup. You figure add in the .chd files, and you're up to 12 cd's. Do you really get cd's at 10 cents?, the cheapest I've seen is $19.99 for a pack of 100 cd's. Which for 12 cd's comes out to $2.30. However 2 dvd-r's at a max of $1.00 a pop comes out to $2. (I recently got them for .89 cents each in bulk). Anyway, even at 10 cents a cd.. 2 dvd-r's really aren't that much more. :)

Do you have a dvd burner? If so, I would really like 2 dvd-r's with the whole romset. I could pay some money to you(for the dvd-r's), and maybe give you a few games(even possibly a 5200 game). I know somebody that can(and did) give me it on cd-r's, but I would like to have just dvd-r's, plus, I don't hvave a lot of the newer roms.

Just for the record, what normally took me a couple days and 100 cd-rs to back up my rom collection, now take less than 6 hours and 16 dvd-rs.
MAME .65, along with all the CHD files, takes up a little more than 2 DVDs.
I honestly have no idea how I managed with a cd-r burner for so long. My suggestion is a 2.4x DVD-RW burner ($300 at Best Buy), and a stack of DVD-Rs (50 for $80 at Best Buy) will be the best purchase you will ever make for your computer.
Time to burn a 700 meg cd at 40x= 5-8 minutes (depending on the quantity of files being burned)
Time to burn a 4.7 gig DVD at 2.4x= 18-22 minutes (same as above)
Most DVD burners also come with all the programs neccessary to burn .avi, .mpg, and other movie files to DVD for play in your home DVD player, as well as good burning programs for music, data, photos, movies, and whatever else you can think of.

There just has to be something I'm not thinking of. Even if you have all n64 roms, and mame roms, it doesn't even come close to 100 cd's does it?

It takes over 100 cds just for roms. The N64 romset alone is over 25 gigs. If I added isos to the mix, it could easily eclipse 100 DVDs or more.
When you have the full tosec romsets, all Good romsets, tons of pinball tables, handheld games, MAME, and all the other arcade roms, space is eaten up like Marlon Brando at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Sorry for bumping abother old thread, but, I have been researching a few emulation roms, there're a few places/people offering rom burning services, just as reference, these are the sizes of each emulator's roms:
Mame v99 - 10 DVDs with .chd graphic files
N64 - 6 DVDs
Daphne - 8 DVDs
Sega SMS/Genesis - 2 DVDs
all other Nintendo's cart systems - 4 DVDs
PCE ISO - just one DVD
However, I've also seen list of CD-based system's rom sets and each of the following requires 10+ DVDs
Sega CD
Saturn
Dreamcast
PC-E/TurboGraphx CD (what's the dif between this and single DVD ISO?)
3DO
CDI
Neo-Geo CD
I know I miss a few more.
I can't imagine the size of all PSX ISO roms (frankly I have no interest of this set) once they're all emulated, maybe 100+ DVDs?

I don't really know of any other groups who have indexed some of the stuff they have. English language groups, at least. The last I checked I think they were working on a revamp of the main auditing program in anticipation of a big update.

On a related tangent, EmuLoader (http://www.mameworld.net/emuloader/) was updated today. Easilly the best MAME frontend and works with a bunch of other emulators as well.
Awesome awesome stuff.
If there's a demand / need, I could do up a seperate thread with handy pictures showing how to set it up.

The size of a complete MAME ROM set is massive. I haven't had a complete set since early 2000 when a complete set was still well under a Gig. Well I recently decided to go after a complete set again, so I downloaded a 3.3 Gig file called "DVD MAME ROM SET" or something similar from emule. Well, when I open it up, it only goes from letters A to D! I actually have to go and get DVD2, DVD3, etc. It's going to be over 15 gigs when I'm finally done. I can't believe it.

Oh god yes, quite a bit better than MAME32's interface. Additionally it seemlessly integrates support for MAME32Plus, PinMAME, and Zinc. With an active internet connection you can automatically browse MAWS in the screenshot pane, too.
much slicker interface (MAME32's was nice back when it came out, but now it just feels cumbersome and archaic) as well. Better filtering options for the game lists.
So yea..try it out :)
