View Full Version : Am I the world's only gamer who doesn't like gamepads?

I think I am the only gamer in the world who does not use gamepads. My video games obsession started with the NES, and while I used the stock controllers, my wrists and thumbs would hurt. But then I got an NES Advantage joystick in 1988, it was wonderful; I could play video games all day now! It felt so natural, and I grew up in the arcades at the same time so I didn't have that inconsistancy between the arcades and my NES at home. So, from then on I never used a gamepad unless I absolutely had to- I was in hell when the SNES came out, because it took ages for an arcade joystick to be released on that system.

I will not buy a new console unless I can bring a joystick home at the same time- I was lucky to get my DUO from a place in Japan that also happened to have an ASCII PC Engine joystick that was basically a repainted NES Advantge!

Anyway, I've heard of lots of people who only use joysticks for fighting games, or maybe shooters, but I've never seen anyone else who uses them for everything. So that's why I'm posting this, I want to find out if I really am the only one. I mean come on, there's got to be like... one, or maybe even two of you out there who prefer joysticks exclusively...

When I had my Genny up and running back in the day I had the Joystick ( 3 button turbo dials ) and I used it for all the games I played. Seemed alot easier. Plus, it worked on my Commodore 64 so the J was my favorite. When I got another genny I had to get the J so that I could use it again. But I hate using a standard mouse too, so it shouldn't be a surprise.

Did You Know....

...that Kamino can somehow manage to play Grand Theft Autos for the PS2 with a stick?

I have a wireless NAkIworld joystick that has both the analog sticks made into little pseudo-trackball type things. It's still harder to use than it's worth for applications like that.

That's because you only talk to console gamers. Do you think Amiga and C64 people used joypads? No sir.*

* I do use Sega and Logic3 pads with my Amigas, but the overwhelming majority didn't.

I only use gamepads because when I am using a Joystick I need to be standing and it has to be positioned right, I guess it's from all those hours I clocked at the local arcade.

Personally, I enjoy sitting back and playing with a gamepad. If you put an arcade-style stick in my hands, I perk up, sit up, and it becomes serious. I can't relax with an arcade stick.

I play mostly RPG's though, so an arcade stick for rpg's just makes no sense at all :)

It changes your posture, perhaps?

Anyhow...if you ask me, my favorite control setup has shoulder buttons LOL I view pads with joysticks as basically smaller arcade joysticks, less unwieldly, too. Plus you're not rooted in place to a table or whatever.

I finally got used to gamepads, but I prefer joysticks too. I grew up with the VCS, so it was quite a shock to have to switch from sticks to pads. And I do ALOT better with a stick. Don't know why, but they're just easier to control.

Some gamepads are great, like the NeoGeo 'clicky' pad, 6-button Genesis pad or the j-Saturn Pad, but the vast majority of them suck. Hard.

I prefer joysticks, though, and I'm handy enough with electronics to make my own if I have to.

Of course, I'm referring to arcade-style sticks, and not those awful old school quickshot/gravis/whatever sticks with triggers and thumb buttons.

I prefer sticks for arcade style games, such as shmups.

But for games developed specifically for console, I use a pad. For some console-only shmups, like Einhander, i'll use a pad. But then, playing Cotton with the Virtua stick doesn't seem right. As it's a cute 'em up, I prefer a pad even though it's an arcade conversion. It's a bit odd. I'll play Gunstar Heroes, Contra and Gunners Heaven with a pad, but prefer a stick for Metal Slugs. But then I'll play Bare Knuckle with a stick.

Although I have to say, the NeoGeo pad is a wonderful thing. In fact, best pad ever.

I used to be the same.. Switching from a 'Quickshot Pro' Joystick on the ST to a SNES or Megadrive pad was a hell of a transition, but I got there in the end..

I can see the merits of both. While I like joystick controls, it's a lot harder to utilize lots of buttons than it is with a pad, yet I never got joint strain with a joystick but with a pad it sometimes gets painful. (Worst I ever got with a joystick was the odd blister on the palm of my hand from 'rapid-fire' games)

These days I guess I'm more of a 'pad person', but it'd be nice if someone manufactured a decent joystick with the functionality of a pad.

Obviously there are attempts out there.. Just check out Lik-Sang (http://www.lik-sang.com), but I really haven't been so bothered as to check them out...

I wanted him to show me how he does that with the single stick last weekend, but it didn't happen.

You should see him play Zork and Nethack with an arcade stick.

I am the exact opposite. I cannot use joysticks. I just don't have the ability i guess. I am terrible at arcade games and it is a real challange to play Neo Geo(in process of getting NGCD pads). I got a NES Advantage one Christmas and the only game I ever used it on was Track & Field 2 for turbo speed. I have difficulty getting used to using analog sticks as well. As a child I acutally didn't enjoy video games as my sister had an Atari 2600 as I could not use the joystick. When I got my NES is when I got into gaming and the rest is history.

I actually don't enjoy going to arcades as I pretty much get laughed out of the place due to my lack of skill to play on a joystick.

Whenever I play a new game, regardless of the system, I tend to "imprint" on whatever type of controller is hooked to the machine at the time and find it next to impossible to change controller-types without sending my score or ability in said game plunging downward.

All that being said...no, I've never fully accepted gamepads over joysticks/paddles etc. and I've got too much of the old school in me to ever wholly come to terms with their existence. It's kind of like the little voice in my head that still says "Soviet Union" whenever I hear about anything to do with Russia. And of course, the older I get, the more quaint and amusing these dispositionss will seem to the young'uns.

Im the total opposite. Im not used to Arcade Sticks. I never was the hang out in arcades type. I really learned using a controller playing SF2 on the Snes.

Im only used to only 2 controllers after all this time. The Snes and the Dualshock.
