Any suggestions for great 2 player simultaneous games?
We're already big fans of Contra, Bubble Bobble, Ice Hockey, and Tecmo Bowl.

How about Duck Hunt? Plug a controller into the 1st port and you can control the duck in "1 duck" mode.

I don't know whom you are talking about when you say "we're". But if you are referring to a wife/girlfriend I'd recommend Marble Madness, second Bubble Bobble, and third the gameshow vote with Family Feud in particular. My wife loves all of those.
If your "we're" is a buddy/dude then I'd recommend most of the above along with
North and South
Baseball Stars
River City Ransom (I think that's two players)
Oh and if you are a woman, then flip and reverse above suggestions :)

Most all of Nintendo's 2 player VS. unisystem translations were excellent.
Ice Climber, Wrecking Crew, Balloon Fight (the best Joust rip-off ever), and the very underrated Clu Clu Land.

In my opinion, Marble Madness is MAD if you have 2 very skilled players in gets very intense believe me.
JACKAL also very good

I'd also recommend most of the games listed so far (especially the Ikari Warriors series and North & South), as well as these two:
Ninja Crusaders (this game gets good with skilled teamwork)
Eliminator Boat Duel (try to destroy the other player's boat ;))
Arthur-Otaku

Heavy Barrel and final mission (scatz in US)
Many great suggestions already. Here's a few more:
Dr. Mario
Guerrilla War
Gyromite
Monopoly
Rampage
Rock 'n Ball
Smash TV
Track 'n Field II
