View Full Version : DS vs PSP which is your Fav and why?

I have been around on many forums, and I always see flame wars over which is better, and which is more powerful. I was curious as to why or what makes you like the system you like. If you like the DS better, why? If the PSP is your cup of tea, how come? I just wanted to see how people felt. I like both systems, but have to say I am privy to the PSP, simply because I like playing a game that semi-resembles my current home console, not that the PSP is EXACTLY like the PS2, but its a nice change of pace. The DS is nice because they have some good games and the touch screen is a very nice touch...lol. Anyway, thats my take whats your's

DS, and no it is not because my name is Captain Nintendo. :P

The game selection and quality of game is better IMO.
quality does not mean graphics mind you ;)

I would like to have a PSP, but there really hasn't been a game that has made me say OMGWTFBBQ! I gotta get that.

The PSP looks sleek and pretty , but it isn't as sturdy as the DS though.

You could "point / counter point" this topic all day. (no thanks)

The DS.

Why? Because of the games of course.

I guess if I have to choose one or the other, I'll take the DS. The carrying case I have allows me to carry games with the system-so it goes almost everywhere with me. Plus, there are more open-ended puzzlers and other games that are perfect for quick gaming sessions. Like on the can. LOL

The only thing I get out of my PSP is Lumines and emulation-which by no means is weak-but I just don't take it with me since it's so fragile and expensive. Besides, when I play Lumines it isn't exactly a quick thing. 8-)

I am going to have to go with the DS on this one. I had both but recently sold my PSP to fund another DS and a ton of games.

There just wasnt anything coming out for the PSP that excited me. Every game that I bought for it I just ended up selling back rather quickly. (Except Lumines and Ridge Racer)

The DS just has more of the type of games that I enjoy. Fast paced quick fun creative games. And I am kind of a Mario Kart whore.

I prefer the DS, simply for the abundance of games. While there are a few games on the PSP I would like to own (portable Hot Shots Golf and Wipeout come to mind), the variety on the DS is amazing. If they had put an analog stick on it, I think it would be my perfect system.

It's a shame really that the PSP hardware is so nice and the pricepoint for that type of machine is really good that they seem destined to waste it on less than stellar gaming. The movies don't appeal to me and it would only take me one hand to count the games that I personally would buy. I love my PS2 and wanted to like the PSP, but Sony really played some cards wrong.

DS.

It has good games. :)

But to be honest, I do think the game selection is better, mainly because most of the titles are just made well, or they offer some new type of gameplay, like Trauma Center for instance.

DS for the games. The whole pay $24.99 for a movie that i can only watch in a PSP when the DVD is practically the same price hasn't won me over. Although for some strange reason they're a success. It's like trying to explain Rod Stewarts continued survival. You just can't.

I honestly can't see myself owning a PSP for a very long time. I know it's a Sony system, and I know there will be a shitload of RPG's I need to buy for it... but for now there are a whopping 2 and a half RPG's that I care about, and even then it's not even close to worth the pricepoint. As for the rest of the library... meh. It's all the same crap we've been playing for the past 5 years on the PS2. It's all been done, and now their ace in the hole is even going to be released on PS2... all the incentive is just gone.

The extra features don't interest me, especially UMD movies and movies off a memory stick because I simply can't stand the screen. I watched some of Kung Fu Hustle on it (which kicks a serious amount of ass) and the blur is just unbearable. I'd hate to see what a game like God of War would look like on the PSP X_x I already have an iPod as well, so the mp3 playback is completely useless for me.

As for the DS, the selling point is the games, for sure. I can't tell you how much fun I've had with oddball games like Pac n Roll (execpt for that homosexual last level, it's impossible), Trace Memory, and now Phoenix Wright. I was pleased to see some great import impressions of Byte Hell 2000 for PSP, but I doubt we'll ever get our hands on it stateside.

Extending that with serious AAA titles like Advance Wars, Castlevania, and Mario Kart, and not only do you have a well rounded game system, you have a durable dual-system with two excellent quality screens (although I've been completely spoiled by the micro) and a rapidly growing library of games that are both great for their core gameplay and for portability.

Top it off with single-cart multiplay on nearly every game that has multiplayer combined with an already unique and still growing rapidly install base and you've got a key pillar to Nintendo success. I can't say much about WiFi because my router at home isn't a "supported" router, but I've not had much desire to play online as it is. Once the WiFi titles really get moving, mainly the puzzle games, it'll be a tough package to beat according to ANY gamer.

I'd also like to point you all to this thread here:

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27252

That was posted by Zach Meston the day the DS was announced, and I was obviously totally against it, as were most of the people in that thread, and I'm sure the large portion of us have all become believers.

I'd like to become a PSP believer, but at $250 with a still very small library with no huge titles on the horizon (GT4 may have even been canned), where's the incentive?

DS. It's cheaper and there are more games for it that I want to play. However, it took awhile to get there as many of the early games were gimicky. I bought one at launch which was silly...

When the PSP drops in price and get more original content suited to portable play, I will be more interested in it...

Cheers,
Ben

I like my DS just fine.
There's a fair number of good games, not to mention GBA compatibility, battery life is good, and the price is reasonable.

The PSP has poor battery life, slow LCD response, and a hefty price tag. I used to bash the PSP's pathetic game library, but it looks it's finally coming around. Once the hardware and cost issues are sorted out, I think it'll be a great platform.

Okay, I'll say it. The PSP. Love the big screen and the awesome graphics. Also dig being able to play just about every emulator out there on it. Watching movies on it is great too.

I HATED the DS when it first came out. Now that some better games are coming out now, I'm starting to warm up to it. Still like the versatility and hardware of the PSP more though.

PSP

I hated the DS becasue it was a N64 with touch screen
i hate that in my opion the screens are reversed
i do not like the touch screen
the only game i like is nanostray
i realy hoped it would fail to teach N a lesson so that they would come up with somethign beter next time - but i can see im a minority in this

also i went in with a negative out look becasue i felt so jaded by the GBA (it is my favorite handheld currently but i feel i was lied to by nintendo)

but i dont own the psp any more either- i cant stand the suposed analog control and they dont have enough games i like on it

but i like the screen - i like the feel - but i dont like the controls -

if at the very least the screens were reversed on the ds i may have liked it better

so far i hope the GBA keeps on living longer

I've only owned a PSP for a month now, and I've had my DS for almost a year, but my vote goes to...

PSP

I look at it this way: The DS does a good job of recreating Super Mario 64 in portable form. The PSP does a good job of creating Grand Theft Auto in portable form. GTA isn't as *perfect* as SM64 is, but I'm much more excited about playing a PS2 era game in portable form than I am an N64 game.

I've also, admittedly, become more of a fan of Sony over Nintendo in the past generation or so. The DS games are fun, but I keep thinking "gimmick" when I play it. I'd rather play Sonic on the PSP (with the one screen) than look back and forth.

I also like the extras the PSP has - I've got some movies on there, an album (Pac-Man Fever of course :) ), and a couple of photos of my kid. Plus a NES emulator I really, really enjoy playing when I want something quick.

I use my DS way more than my PSP. It is about the games. Yes, the PSP has much better graphics, but the game library (for my taste in games) has yet to shine. Yes, Burnout is fun and that Japanese drumming game is great, but the rest IMHO have been just so-so...

So, now I would say that you should by a DS, but in a year, my mind might change based on upcoming releases.

the DS has had some gems, I think both the PSP and DS have been waiting for THAT key game, although SOCOM/GTA, and Mario Kart/SMB 64, are the two knock outs so far for each system.

Man, I was going to yell at you but your title kicks so much ass.

Why do you feel Nintendo lied to you?

i remeber all the adds surounding the GBA and i was so excited about the system - i got one opening day and was real happy playing some great handheld games -- but as time went on all i was seeing was snes ports - and i was like "hey, where are my outrageously awsome GBA original games" there were a few but thats it most of them could run on the snes"

edit:: i need to add something here -- yes there are original games on the gba - i was just expecting more games like "star X" but much better and not only shooters and ones that totaly distanced the GBA from the snes - thats all - i realy like the GBA and think it kicks the butt of the new handhelds)

what i meant about going into looking at the DS negatively was becasue i was truly expecting an N64 with many games that big brother could handel (yes i know not all but many) - yes i do see great games on it and i do see great games comming out in the future for it , i just expect the DS to lead the same life as the GBA did - not many truly taking the full advantage of the hardware -- also i was disapointed with the touch pad and the screens (not being reversed -- i gues im a backwards guy)

i certainly do agree with you that the DS has fun games on it -- im not saying it dosent - i play them every now and then - but i dont own one becasue i cant justify paying the money for the anoyance id get out of it (same with the psp) - i rather add more GBAs to my growing GBA pile

If you're talking about killer apps, then you should be basing your opinion about what sells or what's popular. Mario64 helped when the system launched, but it's definitely not a system seller. It was more of an appetizer, I'd say. Mario Kart is a shoe-in, but it would be much more sensible to pair it with Animal Crossing (as you said), Nintendogs, or maybe Castlevania.

I'm not much of a GTA or SOCOM fan. I actually got to beta test SOCOM for the PSP and stopped playing it after a few goes. The games that have had me hooked on the DS are Mario & Luigi, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, Trauma Center (although that got dull after a while), Phoenix Wright (which got repetitive after a few cases), and Animal Crossing (which is much more fun to play when someone else has a character on your console/cart)...

PSP rulez!!!

Acutally I just bought a PSP on the streets the other day so I have been messing around with it as its my new toy. I have had my DS since last spring and find it very enjoyable. I really like games like Trauma Center, Castlevanis DOS, Meteos, Feel the Magic.

I only have a few games for PSP and haven't played any of them yet other than Lumines, which is fun. I have a friend who recommended Popolocrois. I picked up Legend of Heros as I was familiar with the franchise (Dragon Slayer-Turbo Duo).

Either way I like them both. They both have good points and bad points and thats all I got to say about that.

For me Mario DS was just not resposive enough with the thumb strap analogue controls, especially in the later levels. I eventually sold it.

The PSP is a sexy system, but simply costs too much for the few games I really want to play on it... This will change in time though :)

Here a tally of games I'm interested in on both systems...

DS
Own:
Feel the Magic (1)
Want to get at full price:
Castlevania DS, Mario Kart DS, Electro Plankton (3)
Want to get cheap(er):
Meteos, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, Pac 'n Roll, Trace Memory, Trauma Center: Under the Knife (6)
Curious about:
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble, Metroid Prime Pinball, Dig Dug: Digging Strike, Wario Ware Touched!, Pac-Pix, Mr. Driller Drill Spirits (6)
Used to own, but wouldn't mind picking up cheap:
Polarium, Zoo Keeper (2)

TOTAL = 18

PSP

Want to get at full price:
Lumines, Wipeout Pure (2)
Want to get cheap(er):
Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee, Mercury, PQ: Practical Intelligence Quotient, Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Acid (5)
Curious about:
PoPoLoCrois, Pinball Hall of Fame, Ultimate Block Party (3)

TOTAL = 10

PSP: Great! I am buying GTA tomorrow, I already beat, Hot Shots Golf, Ridge Racer, Metal Gear Acid ....

You know you're really missing out on many kick ass games, because of you fanboyism. I love my PSP I have many UMDs, Popolocoris, Ridge Racer, GTA, but most of my love right now is going with the DS.

Even though when I show people RR on the PSP people get blown away. I love being the center of attention.

I am making a side scroller as my project, so I am gathering and making art for it.

No Time on top of that.

I might get Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time... thats the only one I can think of, I never liked Mario Kart .....

yea heard about Phenoix Wright, that its really hard to find. does it use the touch screen ? because basically the prob with me is that I want something that actually uses the second screen the way its ment to be! I don't want a game that just shows the map or the curcuit on the bottom you know wat I mean ?

Get Osu Tatakae Ouendan. Thats all touch screen.

I prefer the DS myself. The stylus is good for scratching yourself with while your playing if you get an itch somewhere.

Great thread.

Although i own both, I like the DS more.

Why?

Better gameplay.

Sure, the PSP has lots of functions, And i can play over 300 games on it (With emulation) But it isn't as fun as the DS.

I like both. I play both. I buy for both. They get on quite well together, too, even though the DS is outnumbered.

I like the DS because the games are fun and I like using the touch screen. And I've beaten Mario kart DS.

I gotta go with the DS.

Yes, the PSP looks sexier, but so what? Admittedly, the PSP does have a few games I'm interested in, but they're either retro releases or ports. I'll probably break down and get one after a price drop or three, but not yet.

Sony's deplorable customer service doesn't help either:

"Broken button, normal."
"Dead pixels, normal."

No thanks!

The DS has gameplay experiences you simply can't get on any other system (Trauma Center, etc.). And that's what it's all about, folks - THE GAMES!

Why do people complain about the DS screen? I like having the ability to adjust it to what ever angle I want.

I like the PSP, it's a very sleek product and has a lot of utlity in it.

It can be used to browse online (2.0), LocationFree Tv support (2.5), RSS (2.6), you can upload files onto it and use it like a thumbdrive back/forth between computers and school. In the photo section, I upload manga or paintbrushed notes so that i read them later or mapquest directions so that i could quickly check em out while im driving. In the music section, upload your favorite tunes and listen to em on the same product that you can play games on, even better with a larger Memory Stick and/or the new 2200mAh official Sony battery. In the video section, upload your favorite show or anime ep or UMD to watch while on the go, perfect for flights or while your away from your tv or comp. One of the best UMDs I must say is the 5-UMD disc Family Guy Season 1 Season 2 boxset (currently sold out/hard to find unless you go ebay). Not to mention, UMD is already taking at least 1% of the movie market right now. o-o.

Now, the games. I must admit, there hasnt been much in the omgwtfbbq must-buy category but some of the upcoming new releases do sound very promising. I, myself, am looking forward to the next Untold Legends, I.Q. Mania, and the Capcom games. Some of the current titles really are pretty nice too, like the obvious Lumines, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Talkman, Taiko no Tatsujin, Smackdown vs Raw, etc. Plus with the PSP's sleep feature, you can just put your game to sleep, do whatever you have to do, and come right back to where you left off.

For the emulator/homebrew crowd, theres everything from your favorite old and homebrewed games to notepad, file manager, remote control, radio, pda, calculators, calenders, etc. Adding a little bit more utility to it. Plus theres plenty of other programs like PSPvideo9 to convert videos to be viewable on psp, etc. There's also programs like xlink kai and xbconnect that can trick your psp into thinking that your wireless adapter is another psp for "ad-hoc" mode, allowing you to play some of your "ad-hoc"-only games "online" through tunneling. Pretty cool for outside support.

I may not be playing a game or using it in any way, but i do admit i've been carrying it around with me almost every day. >_<

good points, the DS doesn't have the same amount of options that the PSP offers, but they (to some) have more "in demand" games, or must own games. But I think this year will be a good year for the PSP, like you said there are alot of good titles on the horizon, I for one am awaiting Siphon Filter, and the new Killzone, plus Gran Turismo, should all be nice ports to make the PSP a must own system in 06.

DS
Incredible selection of awesome (and innovative)games.

PSP is far too expensive and so are the games.
battery is poor too.

btw: I use my DS as MP3 -,WAV-,RAW-,MOD-,SPC-,video - and SNES/NES/Master System/Gameboy(Color)/WonderSwan/MSX1+2 emus -Player.All on an one 1GB CF-card in my GBAMP.Of course I have other apps(Windows for DS,Organizer,Calculator,Text-writter.JPEG/BMP Viewer etc etc) and the official Nintendo DS-games demos there too.
and since yesterday I control my computer via my DS from my couch(internet-surfing etc).So my DS acts like a remote for my computer.
:-P

Yeah, that is a really neat piece of homebrew, isn't it?
