The most frustrating game I've ever played would have to be Kangaroo on the Atari 2600. And after all the struggling, you find that the game only has three level variations anyway! >:(

Okay, I've played 1000's and 1000's of games, and I have to say almost instantly that the most frusterating game that I have ever played is Bubsy on the Atari Jaguar. Even the first board is a nightmare to try and play through as the they made the character nice and big on the screen. It looks nice, but you can't really see what is coming up as your run to the right, and constantly and consistantly die. Okay, time for some super Bubsy fan to chie in and tell me how easy it is for them...

The most frustrating game i have ever played would be any of the Resident Evil games with the exception of the RE Directors cut which i almost beat.I don't know why but i just plain suck at all of them, and it makes me mad >:(

I've nearly given up on Driver 2 several times. Especially when I had to chase down and wreck 4 cars in 7 minutes. I got awfully tired of Jones telling me "here's the tip". I also nearly quit when I had to destroy the mad bomber's truck (was that the one that was "heavy with the jelly"?). Now I have to wreck an ambulance, and I threw in the towel for the evening after a dozen attempts. I'm beginning to see a pattern here...
Driver 2 has mo' betta FMV and curved streets, but I think that Driver was a better game.
Doom 64 with the no-save-points and the crush-you-dead-ceilings is another one. When I get crushed, the N64 usually gets turned off.

Battletoads (or as my friend used to call it "BattleChodes") is nearly impossible. I don't know how this one got past the playtesters, but either they were superhuman or they had access to some kind of cheat menu. The regular part of the game was hard enough, but add those speeder bike stages and forget it.

The most frustrating game for me is: Street fighter.you can't even do Ryo's fireball move because the controls stink.I still like the other street fighter games but not this one at all.

Hands Down...Holy Diver for the Famicom ....that game is so goddamn hard and cheap....but highly addicting. Battletoads is definitley next...that game blows chunks. The only reason it was big was becasue they flooded the market with that game and put a big special on it in Ninendo Power magazine.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles(NES). I got so good at that game I could blow thru it all the way to the last stage, but oooohhhh that Last Stage >:( I've never won this game because I just couldn't take abusing myself with it any longer. Good game though, just not one I'll return to.

Every game winds up frustrating me, but most of the early, less professionally designed NES games really got on my nerves. Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde seemed like an exercise in futility, since Jeckyl was so weak in comparison to Hyde, yet you lost the game if Hyde made more progress than his mild-mannered counterpart.

laugh at me but i had so huuuuuuge problems with the last levels in Super Mario Bros 3 (NES), ok, i was 6 or 7 back then, but still....
NES Little Ninja Brothers. I threw the cart at the wall numerous times, shattering the plastic case. Somehow, the circuit board survived, so I continued to play when my temper waned. Eventually beat it, tho, and I'm never going back.

Tecmo Super Basketball for the SNES. Going into the 4th quarter up 25 points then proceeding to miss every single shot including layups and dunks, while the computer hits everyshot, including 3 pointers in the midst of good defense, and eventually losing is not fun. Just ask the controller I smashed.

Xenogears. Yes, thank you for sticking me in a town for hours at a time and making me talk to every single person. I really appreciated all the unecessary and unrelated "development" that had nothing ot do with the story.

Hmm . . . I don't remember Xenogears pulling the talk-to-everyone-or-go-nowhere trick, at least not any more than others RPGs did. However, Xenogears had that goddamn Tower of Babel. Mr. Takahashi, just because the characters can jump doesn't mean that you can turn an RPG into a platformer, and an irritating one at that. Imagine this: Jump. Miss. Fall. Fight five random battles before you can get back to the place where you first leaped. Jump again. Miss again. Fall again. Five more battles.
My greatest gaming frustration, however, is Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Inadvertent Masochism. Ninja Gaiden titles are usually tough, but this one's just nasty about it; cheap deaths abound, and you're given only a handful of continues in which to do everything with pixel-perfect precision. I consider it a miracle that I ever finished that game. But you know what? I'm glad I spent so much time hacking at it. It's been a long time since a title challenged me so brutally and made me thankful for it, and I need another Ninja Gaiden game. Don't let me down, Tecmo.

Nothing wrong with a challenge. (not much of a challenge but better than none)
Actually I don't think I'v ever found a game I couldn't play.
and I never gave up. mainly because my parents wouldn't buy me another
game until I finished the last one they bought LOL
But T2 (NES) gave me the most frustration. I can't count how many times I'd play
through to tha last level with full lives and then die over and over because
I couldn't make that fucking jump. then if I ever made it there was an equally
dificult jump after it. >:(

Silver Freakin' Surfer on the NES. Silver Surfer gets my vote nearly instantly not because it was absolutely impossibly difficult, but because it was ALMOST impossibly difficult. Sure, touching even a little rubber ducky that looks vaguely like a powerup would kill you and send you back to the begining of the level, but unlike some games it FELT possible. My friends thought I'd cracked when I sat down with that damn game for somewhere in the order of five hours. I couldn't stop!! The damnedable thing seemed SO beatable, so, so, so damn close to being beatable... but, eventually.. they made me stop. They.. aww. Man, now I have to go buy it.

TMNT for NES is actually beateable if you stock up on maximum scrolls in level 3...it's the only way. After that, level 6 is a breeze.
Castlevania used to seem impossible to me, but I actually just learned the pattern of every level over the course of years and can now beat it on one life.
Starforce...now there's a game that's impossible w/o game genie....I got to level 16 out of 24 and died, I was so pissed! No continues in that game....and the ending sucked (I think only the American version even had an ending). It tells you Super Star Force is coming soon...it never did, except in Japan...

i got a couple: who framed rodger rabbit for the NES. could always make it to judge doom, but always died. could never figure out how to beat him. by the end of the fight, all i had were my fist and pies.(never had a game genie)
2nd on would be revolution x for the SNES. put in a code for extra lives, and still couldn't beat the freaking helicopter in the 1st stage. that's how to ruin a good arcade to home experence. (but can't remember if it had cage dancers like the arcade version).

Definately Ninja Gaiden 3, as well as Battletoads for NES...I also had a hell of a time with the arcade version of Strider. Also, I never got to finish Aero Blasters for the TG-16, but that one I really enjoyed anyways, so I never stopped trying.

Same as me, until I've finally once beat it. And the scrolls are useful but I died in th Technodrome and lost all my scrolls. Somehow I managed to get through the Technodrome with the next continue, and without scrolls (except those one you can find there) :o

Jurassic Park for Genesis, lots of glitches and deathtraps that aren't easy to spot, especially as Grant. That's on top of the fact you can't stun some of the dinos and the ones you are able to wake right back up 5 seconds later.
Lion King Genesis: quite a few hard jumps that you have to try several times before you make. Probably the hardest Disney game out there.
Battletoads NES: There's the speedbikes but later on, also some level where you have to beat some piece of shit rodent or some other character in a 'race.'
Gradius NES: How can't you mention a game where if you die you go back half the stage and start over without weapons. It's like "Prick, I can't get through some of these parts with a full arsenal (shields, lasers, etc), how am I going to make it through with just my standard gun." The rocks and Easter egg island heads (just because of their numbers) have left me in a rage many times and screaming like the fat guy who sells insurance/loans for 'the competitor' in the Di-Tech.com commercials and keeps losing his customers to DiTech, "OH NO, NOT AGAIN......!"
Bart vs Juggernauts GB: 50% the events are impossible. 25% of the events can be won only with a good deal of luck and button jamming. The remaining 25% of the events are pretty easy but they either are the ones you get to participate in the least (skateboarding) or they are the ones that give you a lower dollar amount (that basketball type game).
Fishing Derby 2600: Maybe I am just bad but I cannot master this game. That shark also always has me screaming like the fat guy from the DiTech commercials, paraphrased: "OH NO, NOT AGAIN....... I lost ANOTHER fish to the shark from Fishing Derby."

Gargoyles for Genesis- in the 1st level when you have to scale 2 castle tower walls at once, jumping alternately & avoiding fireballs...I couldn't BELIEVE how hard that was for a "kid's game"! It took me at least an hour to do & I was screaming at the game the whole time...in my apartment! Never got far past the Rookery level...yet.
Chakan (Genesis)- in the small amount of time I've spent on this I haven't been able to get too far...I really need to schedule some time to get into this game!
Fatal Frame(PS2)- great, fun game but trying to photograph that G.D. Wandering Monk made me lose it & wreck the disc as a result.
Martian Gothic(PSX)- also good but composed of too many tedious tasks w/in the game & kinda long...plus the FMV messed up so it felt like I did all that work for nothing. No plans to try again soon...

The speeder bike level in battletoads was tought, but I made it through there. I got all the way to like level 6 or 7, a (second) sewer pipe half running/half swimming maze. A lot like the one before it, but the water was filled with spikes Aarrgh! You would have to do crazy things like run full speed and jump to reach a part of the water with two spikes on either side and then stop all movement and fall straight down.
I beat Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden II, but could never beat III.
Total recall was another game I couldn't beat. I could barely make it out of the first level in that evil game.

Deep Blue: This game slaps you very cheaply, and the sheer fact that your ship is slow and weak doesn't help at all. I could never get past the first level, and rarely ever made it to the first boss, only for it to spit fish at me.
Double Dragon 3: Either version irritates me, but I hate the arcade version more (and why was it ported to the Genesis and Game Boy?). The controls are bad and the cheap hits don't stop, especially during Cleopatra, one of the cheapest bosses ever. I have no idea if you can even avoid being pushed away by ESP in that game.
Magician Lord: Very difficult and frustrating game. The main character can't fire diagonally in most forms, can't fire while on a ladder, and can't jump off the ladder either, making it a frustrating experience in certain points of the game. The seventh stage just irritates the hell out of me. You get hit on the platformer, you die, fall off, and have to start over.
Gradius 3 (super ultra hard Arcade version): To me this is the hardest game ever. Thank God the SNES version is toned down. If you ever played this on MAME or on the PS2, you'd know what I'm talking about. I had difficulty even getting past the first level on one life, and the second stage is just hell. Don't get me wrong, I love a challenge, but enough is enough.

The levels in Max Payne when you are having those messed up dreams and have to follow blood trails then you mess up and start over again. And the baby is crying the whole time. Then you fall down and you scream so loud your ears bleed. After one fall I turned the sound on my tv all the way down and I fell again and still heard it. I think I cryed when I beat those damn levels. I was so happy.

It's amazing how many games people listed on here are ones I've taken over my knee and spanked silly -- even as young as 10! :D
A game I could'nt finish? I'm actually hard pressed to think of a game I WANTED to finish but could'nt because it was too hard. I guess the only one I can think off right now is Phantasy Star 2, and that's only because I did'nt want to invest the days of straight game playing that would be needed to get my levels high enough to finish the game, though.
I WILL admit, however, that I could never beat the last guy in Capcom's NES game Code Name: Viper without using Slow Mode on my NES Advantage. :-D

I do remember having loads of trouble in Solstice (NES). I never got further than about 33% through the game.
Make fun of me for this, but any part involving a shootout in GTA (PSX). I.Just.Cant.Do.It! >:(

I can't tell you how many times I played that damn game. The only thing that you can do is play a two-player game (you will get one extra shield and you can press down the fire button on the 2nd controller with a chair leg to get extra firepower) and enter the only code programmed into the game... the ability to turn off the timer. I read in an interview where one of the game's programmers admitted that the game was too next to impossible and that they should have put in some more codes, but didn't. >)

How about Street Fighter 2010 for the NES, that was one that always gave me a lot of trouble. Not to mention the bounty that is Double Dragon for the Atari 2600, where my character seems to be a punching bag.

Battletoads was tough, but in the end I could go through the game like there was no tomorrow. (using warp zones)
1. Level 6-2 of Ninja Gaiden(NES). This one very difficult jump sequence drove me nuts. My only game experience was SMB and Mega man2, and I almost gave up on Ninja Gaiden. I didn't look at it for 6 months, and when Ninja Gaiden 2 was annonced , I got back and finally beat it. My best time finishing the entire game: 25 minutes, 34 secs. The other Ninja Gaidens were easier.
2. The last fight with Dracula in Castlevania 3(NES). Geez, what a fight! It took me 8 hours to beat him.
3. To get the Gold medal in the last license test of the S-license in Gran Turismo 3(PS2). Try it...it's so frustrating...and FUN!
4. To beat "King" in Virtua Tennis (Dreamcast) in the Championship mode and get the number 1 spot. It took me two evenings to defeat this..this...this...monster!!
I agree with Gradius 3 for the PS2, it's hell! :) I have to tackle it again, I only finished two stages...time to get it out again. :)
When the control of a game is good, it's more of a big challennge than frustration. The true frustrating game experiences stem from games with bad control where you blame the control and not yourself.
Once mastered, the big challenges on the edge of frustration are the most memorable and FUN game experiences. That's why we play videogames, there is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment after mastering a big challenge. :) You go from this :o to this :/ to this :angry: and finally to this :D . Isn't this one way to immerse a gamer into a game??

Get this game out NOW :-D It's fun, not impossible to beat at all, I even drew complete maps for it on the PC. The sequel Equinox for the SNES is also a great game.
Back in my NES and SNES times I had a great policy...I never bought a new game before I finished the old one. I should have stuck with it. I finished all my NES and SNES games (altogether around 110)

If you find that near-impossible test fun, sir, you should have your head examined. :) I also found the reverse Seatlle course S-test rather difficult (the one with the GT40).
I'll also jump in here and say TMNT as well. Couldn't pass level 3, ever. Granted, I haven't even tried in like over 10 years... LOL
Recently, I've found both Contra: Shattered Soldier (PS2) and F-Zero GX (GCN) to be of extreme difficulty. I'm all for tough games, but cripes! These really push my limits.

Strange, my psychiatrist said the same thing. :)
To get gold medals for every test for the S-license is difficult, the last three rank from very difficult to insane. Over a year ago it took me more than two hours just to pass the last test, and I didn't evn look at it again all this time. A couple of weeks ago I tried again just for fun, and after two hours I had gold! I was flying out there, in the last twenty secs of my record time I was in a different world, adrenaline pumping...great experience :)

T2 on the game gear drove me nuts. That game isn't hard. It's impossible. I've never even seen half way through level one.
FIFA 2003 (after playing Pro Evo 2) Mainly because everyone just seems inept.
Snake's Revenge - Why can the bad guys shoot in 8 directions when you can only shoot in 4?!
Contra: Shattered Soldier should get a mention too - but I consider that frustrating in a good way :)

Ghosts N Goblins for the NES, I tried so hard but couldnt even get to the bridge part. The worst thing about that game was after you die, you have to see the stupid map scroll for like six seconds which feels like 10 minutes before you start again. Then of course you die in two minutes. Ugh!

THE definition of impossible:
Kings Quest 4 (Apple ][e) - the games pretty frickn hard to begin with but the last thing you need to do in the game is to put the bridle on the unicorn. I spent several YEARS trying to get her to do that. It wasnt until about a year ago that I found out on the net that there was an error in the game where doing that was impossible. GRRRRRRR
And I am shocked no one has listed this one yet:
QBERT (atari) - every time you accidently hit L/R rather than diagonal... death. and with those 7800 joysticks, that was near impossible.

MDK2 for the dreamcast was very hard for me. I remember that some of the levels with Kurt were hard, but nothing compared with the level with Max where you have the jet pack and you have to fly to the top of some huge building. It took like 10 mins to complete and if you messed up and fell, odds are your momentum would be too great and the jet pack wouldn't be able to save you. I took a break from that part and came back around 6 months later to beat it on my 3rd try or something like that, but overall it took me probably about 30-40 tries. I had read somewhere that there was an elevator somewhere in that room that would take you to the top, but I could never find it.
Even after all that, I made it to the ending boss and never beat him. Maybe I should try again.

Dark cloud-who knows but this game pulled my chain. I rember yelling a thetv in rage and breaking my only ps2 controller.
Dot hack//infection-AAAAHHHH!!! ha part with mia is pretty impossible. I had data drained the boss but he killed my @$$H0!E to #E!! oK ENOUGH POINT IS THAT GAME IS A PRETTY BIG LOAD OF $#!T!!!!
MARIO BROS-I WAS TRYING to get the secret level but I was only able to go o world 1 level 2 once, so I had to reset and redo the proccess.

Gaiares for Genesis was pretty hard, also Hellfire for Genesis....and also Thunderforce 4 (try to finish it with just 3 lives).
I could never pass the last level of Battletoads too....and i never was able to pass level 6-2 of NInja Gaiden.

I'm usually pretty damned good at shmups but I have to nominate R-Type Delta as the single most f'n frustrating game I can remember. I can not pass level three and I've had this game for over a year now!

Definitely Cannon Fodder for the Jaguar... even with a complete walkthrough of the game, I can't even get a quarter of the way through the game. The game would be easier with a mouse of course, but it's just so damn easy to die.

Rambo and Ghostbusters for the NES. When I first got Rambo I realized it sucked after an hour of play even at age 7, but becuase i love ghostbusters the movie so much i fooled myself into thinking the game was good for about 3 years. Also if anyone has beaten Rambo for the NES please let me know.

Deep Blue: This game slaps you very cheaply, and the sheer fact that your ship is slow and weak doesn't help at all. I could never get past the first level, and rarely ever made it to the first boss, only for it to spit fish at me.
Double Dragon 3: Either version irritates me, but I hate the arcade version more (and why was it ported to the Genesis and Game Boy?). The controls are bad and the cheap hits don't stop, especially during Cleopatra, one of the cheapest bosses ever. I have no idea if you can even avoid being pushed away by ESP in that game.
Magician Lord: Very difficult and frustrating game. The main character can't fire diagonally in most forms, can't fire while on a ladder, and can't jump off the ladder either, making it a frustrating experience in certain points of the game. The seventh stage just irritates the hell out of me. You get hit on the platformer, you die, fall off, and have to start over.
Gradius 3 (super ultra hard Arcade version): To me this is the hardest game ever. Thank God the SNES version is toned down. If you ever played this on MAME or on the PS2, you'd know what I'm talking about. I had difficulty even getting past the first level on one life, and the second stage is just hell. Don't get me wrong, I love a challenge, but enough is enough.

Most recently, it's been Def Jam Vendetta. I'm stuck on the stage where D-Mob's 3 thugs hand out an hour-long ass whoopin' and I've been there since April.

I'll stick with game types I'm normally good at. (I blow at schumps)
Soviet Strike, Croc as well as Chalkan I literally used to scream at Ecco the Defender of the Future, I now loathe that stupid game,

Incredible Crisis for psx and Mystical Ninja starring Goemon the part where you can to swim up the waterfall were very frustrating for me.

Lord of the Rings: Two Towers for any platform.
I breezed through the entire game up to the second to last main level, and now I can't beat that level. I really wouldn't have cared as much about the second to last level being so tough if the rest of the game wasn't so easy. When I say breezed, I mean like 2 hours breezed though the game, and now I am stuck. The entire game was easy as hel, and now I am stuck. It is too bad when things like that happen in games. Make the whole game as hard as the hardest level, or make it as easy as the easiest level (usually minus the first level on some games, since many games have a tutorial as the 1st level). This may be why some of you have problems with super hard games. Many programmers fell like I do. Either make all the levels hard, or make them all easy. Gamers get frusterated when they get to the second to last level in a game in 2 hours, to only be stcuk since the level is so hard. If you couldn't tell, I am still a little frusterated at that damn game

For the guy that said Def Jam Vendetta, here is an easy tip to ensure that the level is easier. Go for the small guy, I think his name is sticks or somethinkg like that. Just keep doing moves to him, and once you get your special meter up, the other 2 will run away, giving you enough time to give the little guy a KO. when i say go for the little guy, completely ignore the other 2 besides avoiding them. trying to fight off all 3 is too hard. trust me, try this way, and it won't take near as long to beat it.

Well I have to second two previous nominations right now:
Incredible Crisis on the Playstation. We bought it 2nd hand having heard recommendations here. Absolutely the most frustrating game in the world! Played it right through, just to make sure ... but initial impressions were only confirmed. THere was the odd vaguely entertaining mini game - but the main part of the game was doing the same irritating mini game over and OVER again, just getting a bit longer and harder each time round. And the vast majority of the mini games were just crap.
Also .. Double Dragon 3 for the Megadrive. Remembered the original game from the Amstrad, thought "wow ... a Megadrive version of DD3 ... gotta be great!" Finally got it a couple of weeks ago. Supremely disappointing. Bad collision detection, bad graphics, bad moves. Bad everything. Looked like a Master System port - played like a slug on downers.
