It occurs to me that I should try to resume my Eggerland Meikyuu no Fukkatsu (aka Eggerland Mystery Revival, or perhaps The Adventures of Lolo Zero) translation sometime soon. I do have most of the technical work done, and I also have a complete translation of the text. It would be nice if I could actually finish the game first, but I don't know when that's going to happen.

Anyway, last time I was at this I was trying to hack in a new title screen, and it was such a frustrating job that it did much to put a halt to my efforts.

My understanding is that title screen hacking basically involves finding the tiles for the title screen, replacing each of them with a number, and then re-examining the title screen in an emulator to see which tile corresponds to which coordinate of the title screen. You then replace the tiles accordingly. And apparently if some tiles are reused, there's some pointer hacking involved as well.

On the whole this seemed like a hilariously difficult process. Has anyone here done some title screen hacking? Do you have any tips?

This site has a bunch of great documents:

If you're still having problems, you might want to try posting a message on there or on:

Yes, http://romhacking.deadbeat-inc.com/docs/titlehack.txt is pretty much where I first learned the details I described above. It still isn't a pretty business.

So no one here has tried something like this before?

Sure, we've all heard of it before, it's just there's not as many rom hackers here as boards like the ones at nesdev.parodius.com and sites like that. There's some crazy expertise on this over there...have you given them a shout for this yet? :)
