Can't figure out what game this is from. It's hosted on a Ristar site, I know. It's not Ristar.

First off, I'll repeat what I agreed with some other people seems to be the case: It sounds like it uses the YM2612's sample set but it has the rough edges taken off. It sounds like a CD-ROM recording.

It is most certainly not SMS or Mark III with FM sound; doesn't sound like anything from a Famicom mapper/sound chip (i.e. in Megami Tensei II), isn't from the Game Gear, and I can't think of any SNES game that sounds like that (the closest match would be...not close enough.

Regardless, we did a LOT of work on it last night (can't remember everybody, but DragonmasterSlash on another IRC network, and a few people in #vbender). I'll try to list everything we know it ain't:

For reference, I used the rips on Project 2612 (http://project2612.org/), other people used sound tests in emulators like Fusion32 or Gens.

Sonic CD (verified by multiple persons with the actual game)
Sonic 3D Blast, Crackers, Spinball, Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

Sparkster/Rocket Knight Adventures, Vermillion, Warsong, Langrisser II, Landstalker, Crusader of Centy, Columns 1 or 3, either of the Tiny Toons games or Animaniacs (these would seem to be among the closest matches). It's not Dyna Brothers 2.

It ain't any of the Mega Man games (the Project2612 has them all, I believe).

Either Earthworm Jim game, Cool Spot games, or ToeJam & Earl (obviously). Not Bubsy, any of the Ecco games (1, Tides of Time, or Jr.).

Basically, nothing in Project2612 is a match, so don't bother.

I'm just taking a shot in the dark here, but could it be from one of the Streets of Rage games? That's what it reminds me of anyway.

Cool song though. Makes me want to play the game, whatever it is.

Nice tune :)
The first thing I think of is some japanese import game. Is it original or a remix? Hard to say :\

Not close.

As Slash said, this sounds like it came from a game with lots of cute, furry animals in it.

Fair enough. LOL Are we sure it isn't from any of the Sonic games? It definitely sounds like it is from the 16-bit era to me, and I feel like it sounds more like a Genesis/MD game than a SNES/SFC game.

I agree on all counts, but sadly, none of the Sonic games check out. Take a look at my list up above, that's only a few of the games I've tried.

Yeah, it isn't Sonic either. I'd know if it was. Though it does sound a lot like Chaotix.

If I didn't know better, I'd say it's a 32X game...the drum samples sound too clear to be the Genesis' DAC, but it could be from the MP3 encoding... Definitely not Chaotix, and it's nothing on P2612 as far as I know, as I'd probably remember it from when I posted the set.

Some of the instruments sound sort of MIDI-ish, but there's a definite PSG-alike in there, too. Reminds me of the later Vic Tokai releases (Socket and Columns III in particular)...but it's not either of those, either.

I'll keep an ear out, though. :D

I know it's a sega game, but I can't put my finger on it.

Flicky?
Kolibri?

They do sound too clear, and I'd discount the encoding...seems to me a fair difference.

I've checked through most everything there, so nope.

Yes, besides those and Sonic it also reminded me of the Mega Man titles...

32x and Sega CD sound like good things to check next.

I'm curious: Where did the sample originally come from?

I'm starting to think it's some obscure Japanese PC game, in which case Hoot (http://www.snesmusic.org/hoot/html/) would probably be the best bet of finding a match. The slight dissonance at the beginning suggests a MIDI setup of some kind...

It's not Kolibri or Flicky...

how about Psycho fox ? ( didnt listen to the clip but since it was mentioned as a Sega game with fuzzy animals it just popped in my head ).

I think it's from Sonic The Hedgehog 4, the pirated SNES game. I'm just guessing.

Some people a while back went and made a pirated game for SNES called Sonic the Hedgehog 4. I'll try to get more info on it.

EDIT: Here's a good story on this game. There are multiple stories within it too, so don't forget to read those
