Why didn't you like it? It's gorgeouseeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

:D
Well, for us crabby old wisconsinites who complain when the temperature outside exceeds 70F....
Cali is not the place to be !LOL
Best of luck at the store.

I've got a good friend in California... he just about went ballistic when I told them that I wore shorts, t-shirt, and drove around with the windows open and the sunroof down when we hit 45 the other day. I think they close schools and most public buildings if it gets DOWN to 45 in California hehe.

I wanna go to Cali! It doesn't smell like over here... and you can probably breath there too!
X_x

If you go to Northern California maybe...

Yer damn right, I love living in Northern CA. Come around the San Francisco area, it's beautiful 'round here. Breathable air, you can (usually) see sky, arcades, good people, good tunes... lack of bad smell (unless somebody farts with the windows rolled up in the car of course, but that's universal)...

Plus if you're legal and all that, I could probably find a cardroom or two. ;) :D

Which do you want to share with him-the toxic sludge, or the fact that NJ has enough unexplained phenomena to make it a top vacation spot for Fox Mulder? ;)

@Joe: Did you remember to give *Rin* a stick, with which to beat the guys away with? ;) After all, playing video games has been known to make girls hotter, and drooling has apparently ensued.

(I know. What can I say, though? I'm weak. ;))

Here in nature we can see the gaming nerd sense prey in the lone female that also plays video games. They pounce quickly and with ferocity, each claiming stake to the lone female. A battle ensues with "rbudrick" spilling first blood by claiming his prowess in the game Batman. Who will strike back? Will someone call the other a "n00b"? Three weeks in, here's the company report on DP Videogames LLC's first employee.

Jenn is certainly up for anything - in three weeks she's picked up on everything she's been taught, and has provided welcome breaks in my day. It's clear she doesn't prefer the menial tasks like vaccuuming or windexing and clearly excels with register duty and the signature "initiate shutdown sequence" when the store closes.

Strengths: great with people, fast learner, energetic, and great at absorbing information and applying it later.

Weaknesses: well, it's her first job. I'm working on her attention to detail, cleaning up clutter that's left behind, and staying focused on the job when distractions abound.

Highlights of the first three weeks:
- The store has a large TV display where we often put in games and let customers play at night (when there are mainly adults around and not loitering youngsters). Guitar Heroes has been a favorite, and Jenn once ran in circles around the center island shouting "GUITAR HEROOOOOOOES! GUITAR HEROOOOOOES!". About six times in a row, in fact.
- Jenn asked to borrow one of the large boxes we use to package systems in. I obliged, and she proceeded to assemble the box, sit it in, and draw various cartoon images and text all around it.
- Sometimes she busts out the dance pad and performs.
- She volunteered to set up Stepmania on the machines in the internet gaming center.
- While breaking down cardboard boxes for recycling pickup the next day, she performed what seemed to be a re-enactment of The Incredible Hulk, complete with stomping and loud grunty roars.
- While a customer was playing Guitar Heroes one night, Jenn grabbed the giant stuffed Sonic from our window display and began dancing around the store with it. Sonic is bigger than Jenn, to get a clearer picture of this.

I think the highlights describe what I like best about having her around - she makes me laugh. It's a pleasure having that spark of energy around the store and her presence clearly adds a fun vibe to our little home away from home.

Overall score: B+. Off to a great start!

Yeah, I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I wouldn't want my boss putting a review of my job performance on a website for lots of people to read

Bronty-2
02-11-2006, 07:33 PM
Exactly... these things, IMO, should be directly communicated and private.. rather than indirectly communicated (it's almost like you're using the website as a means of telling her instead of just saying it to her face?) and public. No offense Joe.

Besides, from a CYA standpoint, you could be breaking NJ or federal law by publishing an employee review for public consumption for all you (or I) know. I wouldn't be surprised if she's formally entitled to privacy rights when it comes to stuff like this. I'm just speculating... but it's worth thinking about, right?

On a more down-to-earth level, you could piss your employee off.

Good luck and continued success.

It isn't something I would have done without consent. She was informed in advance that I'd be doing that, there was no objection.

If there was any sensitive or private information it would never be seen publicly. This is hardly an official review but more of a "how's it working out" - since so many people got involved in this topic, Jenn included, a follow up was a fun way to get some closure.

For the record, I spent 15 years in corporate America as a team manager, I understand the rules. If you were working for me and this kind of thing would have bothered you, I wouldn't have posted about your employment in the first place. I probably wouldn't have hired you, either.

Thanks for your concern, though.

As long as you've thought about it. It's your store after all.

As for the 'if I worked for you' angle that works both ways.. I oversee people too. And if you were working for me and you made that kind of info public about someone working below us, we'd be having a talk. But it's your store - topic dropped.

Joe, I'm sure you are aware of the twists and turns "corporate America" can through at you. Just because you have a fine relationship one day, doesn't mean that someone can't drudge up stuff like this (even though she verbally agreed to it) at some point in the future if things go sour.

I'm sure Jenn wouldn't do something like that, but it's something to consider for the future.

I really dont understand why some people are making a big deal out of this..

There was absolutly nothing negative said. What was said was that she's a great employee, a pleasure to have a around, a fun person, and so on (all of which are true by the way)

I could understand getting upset if Joe were to criticize her, or say negative things. That's a lot different.

But this however, is nothing but positive things. Nothing I can even imagine getting upset over.

I just think that making anything like this public is so offside it's not even funny. I'll stop checking this thread because otherwise I will just keep blabbing on this. It IS a big deal and the fact that the review is mostly positive is of NO consequence. It's public. End of story.

I just think that making anything like this public is so offside it's not even funny. I'll stop checking this thread because otherwise I will just keep blabbing on this. It IS a big deal and the fact that the review is mostly positive is of NO consequence. Whatever Joe was team leader of, it sure as hell wasn't human resources.

No, I dont think she'd post about it. If she truly had a greivence with it, I think she would talk to Joe in person, not post on here. There's no point in forum chatting and exposing your opinions to others if you dont want to or dont have to.

Personally, I think you're making a big deal over absolutly nothing. Your basically criticizing Joe for making a checklist of positive and fun things this wonderful girl did. I would be honored if someone posted like that about me, not get on their case about it.

And that last sentence was just completely unnecessery, and if that were directed at me, I'd be pretty mad. Actually, I still am mad, because Joe is an amazing guy and a great boss/friend, and although you seem to think his human relation skills are below par, I work for the guy, and see him in action.

If his human relations were so bad, he wouldn't have friends across the country on here, have a long list of regulars that come to the store not only to shop, but to engage in fun friendly conversation. Shit, that's why I kept coming back to the store, and that's why I love working for him. I could keep going, but I don't wanna embarras him =P

I'm actually looking forward to my review, so expect another one. And just so I'm clear and you aren't confused...I do agree with this, I find absolutly nothing wrong with this, and am looking forward to it. There it is, in plain HTML for you. So hopefully next time, we won't have to read this same argument.

Excuse my bluntness everyone, but that last comment about Joe just really got under my skin. He's a great guy running a great business, and doesn't deserve to be knitpicked at. :)

What, so he can cover up for you? Just drop it, geez. Joe already said he talked about this with Jenn and she had no problem with it. Honestly this whole thread runs along side the "Opening a game store" thread which is to keep us all up to date on the progress of the DP store - since we're all obviously curious about it.
