I recently bought a SNES at the local Goodwill and I'm having some problems with it. Everything checks out okay but when I plug in the controller it doesn't repsond properly. The action on the screen does not correspond with what you do on the controller (when you push up it goes over, when you hit the B button you go left, etc.). I thought this might be a problem with the controller but it works fine on my other SNES unit. Has anyone else had any problems like this or can anyone give me some advice on how to fix it? Thanks!

This should be in the Restoration Forum.

You need:

a 4.5mm gamebit (to get into the deck)
another busted SNES for parts

It's a pretty safe bet your controller block, or controller ribbon cable are damaged. You need to get in to the SNES, gently remove the ribbon cable from the controller block, and the mainboard. Replace them with (hopefully working) replacement parts.

It's actually quite easy. The hardest part will be getting a gamebit (the cheapest way is to buy a great set from SylentWulf (~$10-$15 depending on how big a set u want). Then you need spare parts. If you can't find a crapped out yellowed deck to use for parts, I can get you a replacement block and cable for $10 shipped anywhere in continental NA (75% of that is shipping :D ).

Good Luck!

Actually I think your problem is a dirty game port. I've gotten more then one SNES that was stored in a garage or basement and the high humidity actually caused some odd green oxidation to form on the ports metal connectors.. this would cause all sorts of errors like A would be B or wouldn't work or down would be up or start did nothing.

Take a tiny flat head screwdriver and scrape it on the pins inside the connector port. There is no need to open the console for this problem.

I've never seen that. That's a good idea. Definitely try that first!

Thanks for the tips. I do have the gamebit driver and I have inspected the connecting ribbon and it seems to be in pretty good shape but I will try to clean the connectors on the controller port. Thanks again for your help!
