View Full Version : Games you've never stopped playing?

I think most of us go through phases- first you'll have your favorite games for system X, then system Y will come out and you pack up your system X games and play with your new system Y for awhile, until system Z comes out. Maybe a few years later you'll break out system X and play some of those again, or maybe there's some arcade game you haven't played since it's heyday long ago until discovering MAME or something.

But are there any older games that you've always played since it's release, through each of your gaming phases? Games you've never gotten tired of?

For me that game is Street Fighter 2 CE. When SF2 came out in 1991, I played the hell out of it. Througout the life of the SNES, I played those ports regularly until I got the SF 2 package for the Playstation. When I packed up the PSX, I played SF2CE with emulators. Now I have the Capcom Classics package for Xbox, and.... I still play SF2 CE on my MAME cabinet. :P

Though my favorite video game is probably Legend of Zelda (NES), I do get sick of playing it. Haven't touched it in months. But I 've never gotten sick of SF2, and I've always needed to play a few rounds every couple weeks or so since 1991.

What about you?

Lumines, Tetris and Counter Strike.
I would say Counter-Strike as well, but we've really had five or more versions to mess around with (original with APCs - before my time, "classic," 1.6 with shield, Condition Zero, CSS, and now with HDR), plus server-side mods...somehow the game never managed to get old for me. New maps help a lot.

I really can't think of anything I've played forever and ever, but I imagine I'll keep playing some of my "new" favorites for a long time now :)

Super Mario Brothers 1 will always be the one for me as it was the game that got me into gaming about 20 years ago.

Also, some others are Suikoden 1 and 2, Super Mario Brothers 2 and 3, Fire Prowrestling D, Mortal Kombat 2, and Willow for the NES

The original Unreal Tournement for me. As long as there are servers hosting the game I'll keep playing. Actually, I'd probably host a game server myself if I couldn't find another.

There are a couple games that come to mind...

Street Fighter Alpha 3/Capcom vs. SNK 2. Whichever one I find first, I always am up for a little 2D fighting game action.

2Xtreme for the Playstation. Not a very popular game at all, but I ALWAYS used to play this with my cousins and my friends. I have a friend that I play this with regularly, and it's really entertaining.

ESPN NFL 2k5. I've had this game ever since it came out, and I've played it at least 5-6 times a week upon having the game in my posession, until now. This should continue for another couple of years. LOL

Mega Man X. One of my favorite Mega Man games, always been the most replayable to me.

The GnG series, Galaga, Sky Kid, Gradius series (taking occasional short breaks from this one to keep it fresh), and SMB.

Now I do game hop quite a bit on emulators, and I could play some of these on my consoles, but has there ever been a time a game you've owned, you first play it on emulator, then go right back and play it on a console. Gradius 3 of course happens to be one of those games, I could MAME the hell out of it, then pop in the PS 2 Gradius 3/4 pack and go right back at it.

Definitely Mario Kart 64. Oh god, if I had to put in a quarter for every time I've played that game ... man, we're talking NBA money. The four-player mode gets SO much action in my circle of friends, even to this day. We've had tournaments practically end in fistfights at times. We've won and lost hundreds of dollars in bets. It certainly has it's flaws, but it's one of the classic multiplayer games.

Tetris of course, weither it be on the NES, gameboy, playstation, or my moible phone while waiting to get a haircut, tetris is the best.

Super mario 1, 3 i mean come on these are instant classics, every one loves them, either your trying to see just how fast you can get through the level, or trying to show your friends up on just how many secrets you actually know.

FFX- PS2- when ever i cant find anything to play or just hate playing anything else, i could always pick this game to get me through a couple of hours so i can take care of the boredom, even if i have played through it 12 diffrent times, 12 different ways. Ex. (tidus only challenge; no sphere grid challenge, etc.)

Tony hawk- any platform, i mean come on who doesnt wish they could do those crazy things on that game, just have to play it once a month either just for a couple of minutes or playing it the whole month to get my fix, its great.

I always go back to my single favorite videogame the Legend of Zelda on NES (now emu) and never truly get tired of playing it.

It sometimes is the only thing truly capable of transporting me back to a far better time in my life when I was a kid if only for a few minutes.

The music , the sound effects all of it reminds me of a great summer of friends , swimming in the local (clean) swimming pool, riding bikes and LOTS of ZELDA.

Others include:

Capcom vs. SNK 2 (ps2)

Super Mario bros. (emu)

Tekken Tag Tournament (PS2)

the Metal Gear Solid Series

and of course the Silent HIll series especially part 1

Frontier (Elite II). It's not like other games which I might revisit some time when I find it while cleaning. When I get the inspiration or incitement to play Frontier, perhaps just to show it to someone else, I get stuck for a month before circumstances make me do something else. Then, a year later, I find my old savegame and continue.

The other game is Turrican II. It's so accessible.

This mainly pertains to those games I pick up having some time to kill. A round of Tetris takes about 10 minutes. Playing through Contra takes about a half hour. Other than that, Baseball Stars and Tecmo Super Bowl have stayed in heavy rotation over the years.

And that Intelligent Qube picture reminds me how much I need to get a copy, if only it wasn't so damn expensive... I played the hell out of my friend's copy at school back in 2000-01, not knowing it was rare. :/

Castlevania (1-4), Mortal Kombat 1-3, Prince of Persia, Ninja Gaiden 1-3, and of course Street Fighter Duezshe.

SNES and NES games with GG and PAR codes that alter games significantly are fun.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo (CPS2 version)
Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting (CPS1 version)
Vampire Savior (CPS2 version)
Mars Matrix (Dreamcast version)
Kaboom! (2600...well...was there another version of this?)
Quake III Arena (PC version)

These games probably get the most repeated play out of my collection. Mars Matrix is still a bi-monthly obsession for me. One month I ignore it...then next month I absolutely have to improve my score (I need to get around to snagging the arcade board...omg 1 button! =P).

For SNES?
SMW is a good one. I forgot about it but if I had a SNES I'd buy that for sure. All the ole Marios are excelent choices. (except SMB2 IMO)

I think I'm going to add Kaboom: 2600 to my list. I just played it for the first time last year (or the year before) but I can tell it's going to stick around forever.

Final Fantasy:Mystic Quest

A relaxing, quick and easy game. I played this one a lot as a kid too, so it has a special place with me. Also has one of the best RPG soundtracks, IMO.

Donkey Kong Country

Always a fun game in my book. I've always loved this game not just for its gameplay, but for its awesome soundtrack as well.

Super Mario World

I've played through this game so many times that I can almost beat every level without dying once. That being said, I find this to be less frustrating than most other games I usually play and sometimes you just need to take a break from those tough games and just relax and play something like this.

Chrono Trigger

One of my favorite RPGs of all time next to FFMQ and FFVII. This is another one with an awesome soundtrack. The whole time travel aspect of the game is always something fun to play around with too, even after beating the game so many times.
