Capcom has announced that it will be bringing its "other" Street Fighter series to the PlayStation 2 this summer. Known as Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, the brand new compilation pack collects Street Fighter Alpha, Alpha 2, Alpha 2 Gold, and Alpha 3 together in a single set. To sweeten the pot even further, the company has also included the PlayStation / Saturn hit Pocket Fighter under its more formal name -- Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix.

All five games in the collection will share the same three gameplay options: Arcade, Versus, and Survival, and it has been confirmed that the titles involved will all be direct arcade ports.

Check back for additional details as they become available.

More as it's avaliable........

Oh hell yes!

I mean, I have these already for my Saturn and Dreamcast (just Alpha 3 on DC), but I'll buy this one: I'm a sucker for compilations. *_*

Oh thank the gods!

I have sooo missed Streetfighter Alpha 2 on my Saturn

This is GREAT news for old school 2-D fighter fanatics like me :D

Great news for the fighting game community. Even greater news because Alpha 3 will be an arcade port. There has never been an accurate arcade port of this title yet.

(Don't count Zero 3 Upper on Naomi/DC because the mechanics/system were completely different from the original ARC version)

The alpha series really was the best of the Street Fighter games, this is so wonderful to see, and real arcade ports to boot.

Also note, more than just the 3 modes that IGN mentioned:

All titles in the collection feature three core gameplay options. Arcade mode pits competitors against a series of CPU controlled opponents in order to beat the game. Versus mode allows two players to choose among the cast of characters for intense head-to-head battles. Fighters can practice special moves and combos to hone their skills in the training mode. Additionally, all four Alpha titles feature survival mode as well as a dramatic battle mode which allows 2-on-1 tagteam matches.

I think the best part is Capcom isn't combining all the titles into one game this time. It sounds like they will all be separate titles on one disc...nice.

I heard that the BGM was remixed for each game except for SFA3. Yet that was the import version.

How is the US version's BGM? Is it the original tracks?

Anyone know if a Xbox version (with Live) will be coming out? I love the Alpha series, but I can only play against the computer so much until I get bored to death of it.

I haven't looked into it but I'd be surprised if there wasn't an Xbox version released.

Anyone else playing this? I got it today and I'm loving every minute of it. The lack of loading times is truly blissful. Can't wait for Capcom Classics vol. 2!

Actually it is coming to Xbox this November as well as PS2. The original news report had typo'd "X360" when it's really going to be Xbox

Picked it up last night.

Good stuff :) But damn do I suck at alpha 3. I never had a chance to play it back with it came out, but i've found a new love - Karin :D

Although, I may pick up the Playstation or Dreamcast version of Alpha 3 for the extra mode...can't recall the name.

I think that was the "World Tour" mode.

Picked it up after work. It's too awesome for words. The sound is nice and clear and the games themselves appear to be arcade perfect. Gonna have to compare them to my other versions of the games.

For instance, on SFA2- On Guy's stage you can see Cody and Jessica. If you're using a female character and you're standing in front of Cody, he'll look at you and smile IIRC. Jessica will then proceed to smack Cody.

I was using Sakura and fighting in front of him and such....noticed he didn't do this little animation. I could have sworn he did it with all the female characters. Hehe.

For those who are curious:

I did a side by side comparison of Alpha 2 Gold; PS2 vs Saturn...and here's my results:

1. Graphics- Compared to the Saturn version, the PS2's graphics for Alpha 2 Gold are fuzzier. Even with sharpness at +16 with filter off, the PS2 version does not stand up to the Saturn's. On top of that, the character sprites are slightly squished and elongated. Their idle animations seem to be sped up a hair as well. As I noted in a previous post, this game seems to be 99% accurate. There's that little thing with Guy's stage that I mentioned earlier.

2. Sound- The sounds on the PS2 are good. Character voices are loud and clear, compared to the Saturn's muddy sounding speech samples.

3. Controls- YMV, but I have an easier time with the Saturn controller...though the PS2's controls aren't too shabby with the standard controller. Haven't tried it out with the ASCII 6-button pad.

So there's my little mini-review.

Are you just comparing controllers? Just wondering, because I noticed I was having problems with moves when I first started, but then I realized I was inputting the commands too slow.

First time playing an alpha with a stick. <_<

It may seem so, but no I wasn't comparing controllers. Response time seemed about the same to me. I just like the Saturn controller for fighting games better. :D

What I am really interested to know is, does the saturn version of Alpha 3 still beat the PS2? I decided not to unload it just incase, I don't think I ever will actually, it's too special.

Damaramu
06-18-2006, 03:03 PM
Yeah, it does. PS2, while it looks and sounds awesome, still has that "blurry" look to it. It also suffers from that slightly squished, elongated character sprites.

Another thing I noticed is that the color saturation is pretty high. They're so bright, especially on Alpha 2, it tends to drown out the fine details on the character sprites.

The colors on the Saturn and Dreamcast version of Alpha 3 are a little paler...probably closer to the arcade.

I wish I could get some screen shots up. I really should get one of those video to pc boxes. Heh. :D

I am on the fence with this one. I might wait for the price drop as well. Is there anything newer being brought to the table that the other versions ex: saturn dreamcast don't bring.

Or is it for people that never picked up any of them.

Is this a cheap way for them to cash in on us fans. I love Street Fighter to death but I have been getting the feeling of fans being milked more than say collection. I dont even want to talk about evolution.

I loved the sf anniversary but I still don't understand the mode variations clearly in that one. That one I must say has to be one of the most confusing mode options in a game to date. If someone can explain that one I would appreciate it.

Is any Dramatic battle mode available? Where you can fight two-player co-op against the computer...like Ken/Ryu vs. Bison in the SFA for PSX?

Edit: I see that they are but how is it set up? Can you play any two characters against any opponent?

You might want to think twice about picking up the Dreamcast version.

I have gone through 2 copies of this game (I'm not opening up my sealed copy), used, both games have disc reading error on one stage due to the music skipping, the reason? Tiny scratch on top side of the disc, permanantly damaging the disc, to make it worse, unlike most games, SFA3 has a lot of bare surfaces on top, making it too easy to damage the disc for average users. I'm pretty sure a huge chunk of the used SFA3 copies out there will have disc reading errors since most gamers aren't careful with handling discs.

One main reason I don't bother with used DC games out there for this simple reason (unless it's good and hard to find games like SFA3 until I realize it's on PS2 as well), but the new, factory sealed copy will cost you at least $50 (on amazon.com), in the end, the World Tour mode isn't worth he cost and hassle.

If anyone wants the extra copy I have here, PM me and it's only $10, one has Sodom's stage choking up (the other one is Cody), if you get to this tage, simply quit the game.

Throat okay there? :hmm: good.

Anyway, yeah, mame on xbox is cool, but sometimes you just want the actual physical game.

Why I ask about games on certain systems is because of that. I just want a good game that I can actually use.

Sound funny? Well, that's how I roll, sonny jim!

Anyway, I think it's neat to have all these games on one disc, but strangely feels empty when I have CCC v.1 . Can't explain it.

Also, has there been a posting of the extras and version switching on GameFAQs or anything like that? I peeked inside a strategy guide for it and seen some comparisons to the arcade versions.
