As of right now I don't have too many games for this but it is one of my favorite consoles(Out of the 19 systems I have). My question is... how should I start my collection? Are there certain games I should try to get first?

((If you want to know, I have about 30 or so games-most are boxed and complete))

Depends what your goals are for collecting are. Do you want to collect for rares, RPG's, shooters?

My personal favorite Genesis game at the moment is Raiden Trad. Genesis has a bunch of great shmups.

When going for a complete collection, a big lot of games is usually the best starting point. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=62053&item=8253251385)

I was given a Genny with a big stack of sports titles. I really wanted to like the system but sports titles make me -_- . Ditto for 90% of side-scrolling platformers and shmups, of which this system has a huge glut.

So I decided to try something different with my approach to Genny collecting: pick a genre, check the DP guide for recommends, and start digging though the mountains of Madden carts. I started with board game ports. Monopoly, Risk, Clue etc. Actually I don't think there are too many past the big Parker Brothers titles, but at least it gave me something different to look for while on the hunt.

After that I started looking for sim and strategy games. I was surprised to find as many as I did. Lots of them are ports from PC titles but it's still nice to have them in cart form and they're not too hard to come across.

Yada yada yada...and now my Genny library is my 2nd biggest after the Atari 2600. It's slow-going at first, but you will eventually find the Genny to be an immensely gratifying system to collect for. I do.

p.s - And don't forget to give the Sonic the Hedgehog his proper due. He's the mascot, after all. Sonic titles will be quick and cheap finds, and all the Genny Sonic titles are worth owning. A Genesis collection without Sonic carts is like a stucco birdcage - rough on the outside, but heavy.

It's always nice to see people spreading the Genesis love. Welcome to a wonderful system, my friend. She won't let you down. :)

That fact that you find them complete much more often than you do games for other systems is a great reason to go for a boxed collection. And the fact that many are really fun games and most are relatively cheap doesn't hurt either. Start checking thrifts and independent game stores...you should find much to choose from. I highly recommend Dune: Battle for Arrakis, Zero Tolerance, MUSHA, and Robocop vs Terminator in addition to all the other games you'll find recommended if you search for some existing "genesis favorites" threads.

Good luck,
Rich

They are fairly cheap everywhere you look. But yeah, look for big lots, they are far cheaper than singles.

I'm also collecting Genesis/Sega CD games as well. So far, I only have about 20 Genesis games and six Sega CD games. This may not be a lot, but some of these titles are really freaking good (not to mention I have some Megadrive imports).

I'm also typing up my Genesis buying adventures and soon I'll upload it onto DP or the Shmup forums. I don't have the best English skills, but I can type good enough when it comes to games. ;)

This is what I have right now:

Sega Genesis:

Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3
Sonic and Knuckles
Streets of Rage 2
Castlevania - Bloodlines
Comix Zone
Ranger X
Vectorman
Vectorman 2
Mega Turrican
Thunder Force III
Lightening Force (Thunder Force IV in the US, yes it's spelled "Lightening Force")
Dynamite Headdy
M.U.S.H.A
Hellfire
Game Genie (I know it's not a game, but who cares!)
Strider Hiryu (Megadrive import, cover art kicks ass)
Twin Hawk (Megadrive import, A.K.A Daisenpuu)
Gunstar Heroes (hell yeah!)

Sega CD:

Final Fight CD
Sonic CD
Ecco the Dolphin
Heart of the Alien - Out of This World Part I and II
Dark Wizard

Both Megadrive imports, M.U.S.H.A, and Sonic 1 and 2 are complete. Just about all of my Sega CD games are complete, except Final Fight CD which I only have the manual and the disc.

Most of my money are going for me buying imports (I'm planning to spend about $48 on two Megadrive imports, and soon I'm planning to spend $20 for a import Megadrive game from here!), but over the last few weeks, I got really luckly. Over the weekend, I got the five Sega CD games (not counting Final Fight CD) for $28 all complete at the flea market.

I still have a long way trying to complete my collection, it might take me six months thru a year to complete my collection (I don't buy every single game out there).

Truly MUST HAVE Genny Games:

Castlevania Bloodlines
Gunstar Heroes
Sonic 2
Contra Hard Corps

Really always look for these better titles first, then have a backup list of unique or somewhat interesting titles to get when you cannot find those first choices, this is how I do it to avoid any disappointment while genny shopping.

Check Ebgames.com:

http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/categories/products/deptpage.asp?web_dept=Sega+Genesis&typ=p&nav=p&order=list_price&intpageno=1&ordersort=asc&nooftens=1

There are times when they will have non-sports titles for 99 cents then use the pplay15 code to get 15% off and then on top of that type in saver to get free shipping (5-10 days)

Also you if you have an EB Edge card you can get an additional 10%. Throw all that together and you can get loose games for 74 cents each (before tax) and no shipping charges.

Yeah, I am looking to collect a complete set of Genesis games. How many of them are there?

I will edit this post later with a list of my games + condition, for those who are interested.

tryiong to get them all is fun and hard

i need about 43 to go - but my first goal was to get the game - then worry about geting the game complete - so it much easier to find titles if you dont wory about them bing complete

for some reason my favorite game is wolfchild so i recomend that one -- i think its the best version out of them all

to recomend some titles not praised ( i may have missed them)

skeleton crew is pretty cool
the ooze is great
i liked battletech
buck rogers
syndicate
cross fire
crusader of centy
i think dashin desperados is a fun party game
death and return of superman
exo squad impressed me

man i could keep going so ill stop here

I'm thinking of starting MegaDrive collections, far fewer sports games, all games are published in hard shell plastic case. Another beauty of MD/Genny plastic cases, they're among the most scratch resistent, going through Yahoo Japan you can usually find a big lot of MD games.

Aim for the good RPGs and adventure games. I don't know how the RTS games play on it, like Dune, but maybe someone else can give you insight on those. The Wonderboy, Sonic, and Phantasy Star series are fun and worth looking into. Also Splatterhouse is fun if you're into Double Dragon type games. I'd suggest looking through the complete games list of the Genesis and look into what you want to collect. Good hunting because it's one of my favorite systems, home of Bubsy! (Just plays better to me on the GEN than the SNES)

I was in a similar situation when I got my first Genesis (with Sega CD) just a month ago...yep, after all them years I have a rare Genesis model 1. :)

I think the most important thing is to get your priorities straight. 1. Is the goal a complete collection or just a selection of games you like? 2. Complete individual games or just cartridges?

The Genesis is a great system to go after complete games. Used to the SNES and VERY finnecky, it is amazing to me how easy it is to get complete games in good condition for the Genny thanks to the plastic cases. There is no reason to settle just for cartridges.

I looked through three gamelists for the Genny, and additionally used the DP online rarity guide, and made the list below of games I'd like to have. Now I have almost 40 games, great shmups among them, great platformers and shooters.

16bit shmups and shooters are just great. These games can give you the feeling of intense action and great control which so far no 3D game could give me.

SHMUPS:

Airbuster
Bio-Hazard Battle (space shooter)
Battle Squadron
Gaiares (horizontal) XX
Elemental Master (a bit like Phelios)
Fire Shark (vertical)
Forgotten Worlds
Grind Stormer (vertical shooter, solid!)
Hellfire
M.U.S.H.A. (must-have, best shmup!) XX
Phelios
Raiden Trad (also on SNES)
Sagaia (Darius Series!!) XX
Sol-Deace (space shooter)
Steel Empire (overhead space shooter, great level design, great graphics) XX
Subterrania (underground shooter, frustrating)
Thunderforce II XX
Thunderforce III XX
Thunderforce IV (called: Lightening Force) XX
Truxton (shooter like Fire Shark) XX
Atomic Robo Kid (person)
Arrow Flash (switch ship and robot)
Insector X (person, scrolling shooter)
Whip Rush (ship!)
Wings of Wor (person, great graphics)
Twin Cobra (helicopter)
Vapor Trail (rare, doesn’t look good)

SHOOTER:

Contra Hard Corps XX
Demolition Man (action, platform, shooter)
Gunstar Hereoes (Treasure!!) XX
Mega Turrican
Turrican (not as good as sequel)
Ranger X (sleeper, great graphics, unusual: character can walk and fly)
Red Zone (Helicopter shooter, great graphics)
Rocket Knight Adventure
Sparkster (good Contra clone by Konami, sequel to Rocket Knight Adventures, also on SNES!!)
Subterrania (underground shooter, frustrating)
Target Earth (2D mech game with great story and graphics)

ADVENTURE ACTION/RPG

Alisia Dragoon (action/platform/shooter)
Blaster Master 2 XX
Castlevania Bloodlines XX
Crusader of Centy (Atlus, Zelda clone) XX
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco: The Tides of Time
Pirates of Dark Water
Shinobi Series (Revenge of Shinobi/Shadow Dancer/Shinobi 3: Revenge of the Ninja Master)

PLATFORMER:

Aero the Acrobat
Aero the Acrobat 2
Battletoads (like NES, slightly improved graphics) XX
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (best platformer, must-have) XX
World of Illusion Starring MM and DD (sequel to Castle of Illusion) XX
Desert Demolition (beautiful graphics, Wily Coyote)
Dynamite Headdy (Treasure!) XX
Sylvester & Tweety Cagey Capers
Tiny Toons: Buster’s Hidden Treasure
ToeJam & Earl (GREAT platformer) XX
ToeJam & Earl 2 (good, not as great as sequel) XX
Valis: The Phantom Soldier (decent platformer)
Valis 3 (decent platformer)
Vectorman
Vectorman 2
Wonder Boy in Monsterworld (great platformer)
??Wonderboy 3: Monster’s Lair (great platformer)??

RPG:

Beyond Oasis (third-person, realtime)
Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun
Herzog Zwei (first RTS game)
Landstalker XX
Light Crusader (third-person, Treasure)
Might and Magic: Gate to Another World
Pirates! Gold (comes with poster-size game map!)
Shining Force (strategy RPG)
Shining Force 2 (strategy RPG)
Shining in the Darkness (strategy RPG)
Sorcerer’s Kingdom (early RPG, like Phantasy Star)
Sword of Vermilion (early RPG, comes with HINT BOOK!!) XX
Traysia (RPG for beginners)
Warsong (strategy RPG)
Y’s 3: Wanderers from Ys (THE top RPG, also SNES) XX

MISC
Columns
Haunting Starring Polterguy (innovative, scare inhabitants)
Micro Machines (also on SNES)

I am about 100 away from a Genesis collection, something that I collect on the backburner. I definately think that collecting this system in bulk is the way to go. You find many lots usually locally that include Sega CD and 32X games as well. Stuff like this helped me acquire my Sega CD and 32X complete collection. Of all the systems that I can recommend good and cheap, I have to say that the genesis has very cheap games to offer, although the system and all of its wonderful variants are getting harder to find in the wild with all their cords.
