View Full Version : Should MAME Support Nudie Mahjong?

Part of the reason MAME has gotten so large, so memory hungry, and so very slow is because it supports dozens of Japanese mahjong games, often featuring a cast of schoolgirls in brightly colored costumes that are ripped from their bodies as gameplay progresses. Does anyone bother to play these games, or even know how to play them? Are they really so important that they should remain an anchor around the neck of an already bloated emulator? And are they appropriate to include alongside more wholesome games, like, uh, Mortal Kombat? Wait, maybe that wasn't such a good example...
Anyway, please vote and add your thoughts here.

Personally, I don't care one way or another about the adult games in MAME. What annoys me is the fact that they get added before the older games are fixed to work correctly.

Well, if you don't want to play them, nobody ever said that you need to have every last MAME rom in your posession.

There are many other reasons why MAME may be slow. I recall reading on the MAME.net boards that later versions are somewhat more optimized towards more complex, multiprocessor boards rather than simpler older games, for instance. Something to that effect, anyway.

And isn't the reason many Mahjongg games can be added is because they all use similar system boards?

You know... If you don't want to play the game, why bother getting the ROM? The only reason I can think of is if you want to be able to say that you have every MAME rom currently available.

Or was that a joke?

I order my MAME ROMs in packs, mostly for convenience but also for the sake of completion. Downloading games one by one is too time-consuming.
This isn't a joke. I seriously don't understand why the MAME team couldn't split the emulator into two builds, one for arcade games and the other for mahjong or games with adult material. All those extra drivers help slow MAME way, way down.

If you're really so strongly against them, then why don't you just find someone who will send you the packs without the "adult" games? (You can also try this thread (http://www.mame.net/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/showpost.pl?Board=mamegeneral&Number=103030&page=0&view=expanded&mode=threaded&sb=7#Post103030).)

And how can you be sure that extra drivers slow MAME down? Are you referring to the load time of the program, or performance in individual games? (If a 15-second load time is really that much of an issue, you can decompress the executable pretty easily and probably speed up loading quite a bit.)

I don't have any problem with MAME's speed and I'm not using the fastest PC, a 500mhz Athlon w/512mb ram. You must be setting up MAME wrong or have some other problem with your PC if your having problems with the speed. I've read people with 1.4 Pentiums complain about the speed and loading times and if I don't have any problems I don't know why they would. What kind of games are you having speed problems with? You're not going to be able to run the most current arcade games as fast as the real deal in emulation until there are faster CPU's. For older, classic arcade games there shouldn't be any speed problems. I read that it should be able to play PAC MAN at full speed on a 486.

No complaints here either. I usually try them out to see if they work, then move them to an unspecified directory, then refresh my game list. VOILA! It's as if they never existed.

This way, you can have all the ROMS without having them "in your face" on your frontend.

Sir, there are two reasons:

1) The extra drivers don't slow down anything, Sir.

2) Sir, you forget that you can remove the drivers for any game you don't want to play and make your own build. The dev team doesn't have time to make a million different builds for everyone's personal version, Sir.

I just wonder who's sitting around thinking "MAME will be better off if I add a driver for another porno Mah Jongg game that nobody will ever play." There's better fish in the sea, people! :-) The sound hardware in Donkey Kong still isn't properly emulated, for instance.

Those Mahjong games probably don't run on any custom hardware. It's probably some generic hardware they licsenced from Taito or Konami and so it isn't hard to add them. I doubt they were writing emulator code just for the Mah jong games.

I certainly hope not. Heh. If more than an hour of intense thought went into emulating one of those, then I've lost faith in MAME. ;-)
