View Full Version : Drivers needed to charge a 360 controller?

I picked up a Play and Charge kit this week. It was cool to know I could just plug it into any USB port to charge it and not have to worry about what the 360 is doing all night.

However, when I plugged it into my PC, it needed drivers. I'm using Windows 98 SE, and there's nothing out there for this OS and controller, at least that I know of. Am I missing something? I don't want to actually use it as a controller, just charge it.

Windows says that when ever it detects a USB device. It's part of what makes USB plug and play. However the play and charge kit simply works off of powered usb so port should work. I actually had mine charging off of a cable box, because it had powered USB port.

Windows if windows keeps poping that up, just let it go through the motions and install it as an unknown device.

If the light comes on everything is fine.

That wouldn't have been an issue, but once it takes it as an uknown, it just keeps popping up the "new device found" screen even if tell it to cancel. Kinda hard to get stuff done. LOL

Still, the suggestion for the cable box did it. I wasn't even thinking that route until you mentioned it. Problem solved. Thanks!

They cablebox idea just looks cool. But that aside you should be able to chrage it off a turned off 360. I believe it keeps the ports powered even when it's off.

That depends. If the play-n-charge kit is plugged in when you turn off the console, the USB port will stay powered up and you'll be able to charge your controller. You plug in the cable after you turn off the 360, it won't charge.

Ah yes that is the catch.

See, that's what I thought, but the light doesn't stay lit when turn the console off. I didn't think it was charging. That's why I wanted to charge it elsewhere.

I think it's auto-detected as a Generic Gamepad within XP. Not 100% sure tho.

The wireless controllers can not be charged on the PC, I've tried and I've looked on Microsofts site. The wired controller is the only one that will work with a PC.
