With new ports coming for Xbox and PS2, I figured I'd update the list for those who aren't ready to "commit" to MVS or AES setups quite yet and/or get teh romz...

- - -
Which Neo Geo games got decent ports to other systems? I left out 16-bit games assuming that the versions weren't nearly as good. This list isn't exact as it lists the Capcom vs SNK games

For Dreamcast you missed King of Fighters 99 (Evolution), for PSX I know 99, 95 came out stateside and 97, 96 and 98 in Japan, as well as Samurai Showdown(I think 2, can't remember). PS2 also has a japanese port of KOF 2k.

Samurai Shodown/Spirits 3 and 4 both came out for PSX

Check here for a pretty good list:

http://www.geocities.com/the_tea_monger/ports.html

Seems pretty complete to me. Check the PSX section espically. There was a whole lot of ports other than Metal Slug X, assuming we're including imports.

And you're right, in my expirence the 16 bit ports are pretty dissapointing. (Viewpoint on the Genny isn't bad tho.)

Also, if you want reviews, check here:

http://www.neo-geo.com/reviews/index.htm

not as complete, but gets you started.

off the top of my head:
Capcom vs. SNK Pro (J) Dreamcast

Capcom vs SNK isn't a neo geo game...so it can't really count. The Neo geo Snk vs capcom has yet to be released.

True but based off the list he has going it seemed to fit in. And it all depends on how you look at it as he has the Hyper 64 PSX ports on there and the other vs. games. Also Samurai Spirits RPG was only on Neo CD.

Also for reference "Samurai Showdown" is spelled Shodown.

Not really...

The Neo CD and Hyper 64 are both SNK made machines, and the games ported from them are all SNK made games, to boot.

Not only is the CVS series not made by SNK, but it's not even on an SNK machine, originally. Naomi=not SNK. Therefore it really doesn't fit in on this list. Now if it was a list of Capcom CPS and NAOMI ports, it would be fine, but it really isn't.

So your saying that if he had the other 'vs.' series games in there already he shouldn't add CvS Pro to the list?

I agree that none of them should be on the list at all. But if you are going to have them on there then you may as well have all of them.

And on top of that if you think SNK wasn't involved in making the CvS game then I beg to differ. The characters look the same and have the same moves as their Neo Geo counterparts. So one would assume that SNK programing is in CvS.

ubersaurus

I don't htink any of them belong up there, I'm not jsut singling out Pro ;p

SNK programming wasn't involved at all with CvS...although the characters look similar and have (at least appearancewise) the same moves, those incarnations of them had nothing to do with SNK. Just as Capcom had nothing to do with the SNK vs Capcom for Neo Geo Pocket other then licensing out their characters.

I say strike the whole damn series from the list and be done with it.

Capcom vs SNK games now have **next to them with a disclaimer.

Magical Drop was never on a Neo Geo home system or arcade to my knowledge. Only on the Neo Geo Pocket Color if you want to count that.

Magical Drop was out on MVS, and the japanese Neo geo home system. It also owns like you wouldn't believe :)

Yeah, the first one was never on the CD or MVS. I have had 2 and 3 on MVS and I have the JP Magical Drop 2 homecart. I agree that it roxor.

Damn, now I feel like popping Magical Drop 2 in my MVS. :P

I'd argue how "decent" a lot of those ports are... Most of the PSX ports are absolutely butchered, and some of the Dreamcast and Saturn ports aren't so great either. Granted, I'm a purist, so for someone who has never played the games in their true form, they might not mind the scratchy sound, millions of frames missing, and other alterations.

No Bust a Move? I know it's a Taito game but every time I've played the arcade version it's been on a Neo cab.

Sure, I'd guess that the Saturn ports requiring extra Ram are good. And the PSone games except for Slug X are probably mediocre. But which Dreamcast games are lacking? :)

Seriously though which ones are crap I can add a minus sign or something...

And I assume that none of them are as good as teh Reel Thing...

If the x68000 counts as a "system," then you can add Viewpoint and Fatal Fury Special :D

Also, why the discrimination against cellphone and Neo Geo Pocket Color Metal Slugs? I hear they play very well...oh well.

So since we're going old school, how about the games released for the Turbo Grafx/Duo/PC Engine?

Fatal Fury 2
Fatal Fury Special
Kabuki Klash
World Heroes 2
Art of Fighting

I can't remember if there's more....

Bust A Move added with an asterix. :)

As far as X68000 and PC-Engine CD go, the list was originally 32-bit and up. Do you think the ports for the systems you mentioned are very close to there Neo Geo counterparts? I don't know as I haven't played them...

In terms of pocket and cell phone Slugs, they are not ports are they?

Ben

There's also Viewpoint for the Fm Town computer/Marty. I don't have it so I'm not sure if it counts or not or if it's a good port. Not sure if the computer is 16 or 32 bits.

You forgot King of the Fighters EX: Neo Blood for the Game Boy Advance (which is a 32-bit system). I think a sequel was recently released.

I know, I know, portable, but you can play it on the Cube with a Game Boy Player...

Fatal Fury Special on Sega CD is pretty friggin close to the original....hard to believe you'd ignore that.

For that matter, there's all the SNES games, too... Aero Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Art of Fighting, World Heroes, and I'm sure there are others.

Hmm,
I know for a fact that the Snes Shodown doesn't zoom in and out, so it's not an acurate port. But I don't know about the others, this is why I stuck with 32-bit and up because you have a reasonable chance of getting a good port of the game.

Is King of FIghters for GBA close to one of the King of Fighters versions, or is it a new or mish mash version? Either way is it a close to the King of Fighters experience? :)

Thanks,
Ben

I haven't had a chance to these two myself but I'm pretty darn sure they're 100%, or very close to it. The only thing keeping the ports from being perfect would be memory limitations, which would be much better on the x68000 (the default installed amount is 1 MegaByte) than on most consoles of the time. Swapping through Fatal Fury Special's 10 floppies probably sucks, but perhaps the game allows hard drive installation. It probably does. I'm quite sure SNK did more ports (I'm guessing more from the Fatal Fury series) but I'd have to see about checking some ROM list or other for that.

An x68000 with 4 Megabytes of memory can do an arcade perfect port of Super Street Fighter 2, and Capcom has said so themselves.

In terms of pocket and cell phone Slugs, they are not ports are they?
Ah, that's a good point.

I think the Far East of Eden fighting game on the PC Engine is different from the AES/Neo Geo cd version. Also thinking about it there is a Far East of Eden game on the PC-FX that wasn't released on any other system.
