Survey: One in three parents play video games

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A new national survey finds that about one in three parents say they play video games.

The survey, commissioned by the Entertainment Software Association, finds 80 percent of those parents play the games with their children. The survey found that the average "gamer parent" spends 19 hours a month playing video games, and spends roughly half that time playing alongside kids.

Two-thirds of the gamer parents said they feel that playing video games has brought their families closer together.

Other survey findings: The typical gamer parent is 37, and almost half the group are women.

Just proof that my mom was way ahead of her time. I thought this was kind of a cool story, and a nice break from "them teevee games made mah little Billy KILL!" type stuff. 8-)

My mom tried to play SOCOM online last night. She got killed by a shotgun, she may have seen him coming if she wasn't looking up at the ceiling. She just couldn't seem to grasp that dual analog concept, a shame really.

Seriously, though... I'm in the "my parent plays games" group too. My mom is a nightmare to be up against in the Bomberman games.

My other gamer relative over the age of 18 would be my aunt, who has a serious thing for RPGs and any Nintendo first party titles. She recently discovered the DS, and apparently likes it. :D

My Mom is getting pretty "Kickass" at Halo 2. shes been playing for a little over three months with me, my wife, my dad and my 2 brothers, and no we have not being going easy on her at all. We tell her it's the best way to learn. she also loves playing some online game with a bunch of her internet friends. can't remeber the name of it though.

Heheheh.. my mom used to play Super Mario Bros. with my brother and I. On certain jumps, she would swerve to the side and pull the controller up. She tried Metroid but could never get too far into it. Once we got Pinball, it was over for me. I could never tear the NES away from the two of them.

Now, I am 28 and play games daily. I have a 21 month old son who is getting very interested in what I am doing. He seems to be realizing that what is happening on the screen has something to do with the controller I am holding. When I used to play WoW, he was always very fascinated while my character was flying, and I participated in a Maraudon raid once while holding him for the last half of it.

While I do game with him in the room, I am pretty responsible about it. I do not play games like Grand Theft Auto or God of War while he is awake. He loves watching me play Dragon Quest 8, and says "keekee" (kitty) whenever he sees some of the animals in the game.

When I get a Revolution, I will definitely be picking up a second controller for it. :D
