Thank god, if it was in the USA we wouldn't hear the end of it.

Yet when it's in the UK, you never see this kind of news on American TV....but somehow we hear about teens and Need for Speed in Canada? I smell a biased media at it again...

**********************************
A TEENAGER obsessed with a killer video game was yesterday found guilty of murdering his sister by torching his home in a twisted bid to slaughter his entire family.
The 16-year-old — who modelled himself on a half-human/half-demon PlayStation 2 character — also hit his brother with an axe leaving him brain-damaged.

The lad always wore black Goth clothes and called himself Dante after the killer character in 15-rated game Devil May Cry, the Old Bailey heard.

He launched the arson attack to rid himself of his family in the hope he would be adopted by a rich couple.

The boy — who was 14 at the time — outlined his plan in a note found by police. It read: “Operation New Life. Kill family. Lose memory. Get adopted by rich couple. It all starts.”

Violent ... Devil May Cry game

He axed his 12-year-old brother before starting the blaze in Lewisham, South London.

His parents and 16-year-old sister escaped but his 11-year-old sister died of smoke inhalation.

At first the lad lied that a gunman told him to carry out the attack.

Sir Allan Green, prosecuting, said the boy wrote a reminder to cut himself to make it look like “a demon had done it”.

Yesterday a jury convicted him of his sister’s murder by a 10-2 majority. He was also found guilty of attempting to murder his brother and arson with intent to endanger life.

His family — who stuck by him — said he was “a bit of a loner”. He was remanded in custody for pre-sentence reports.

Last night pressure group Mediawatch accused the games industry of “living in denial” of the consequences of their products. **************

Every person who partakes in a particular hobby or product does so of their own accord. Yes, some follow a friend into a hobby or game. Dungeons and dragons, video games, certain sports... you yourself may not have got "into" without a friend or group. That said, once you get into it, you will do what you will. Not all car enthusiasts are responsible, people die drag racing all the time. Sports, people get injured on every level from tee ball to world series. Each hobby/activity has its pitfalls, especially when practiced by someone without the necessary capacity to understand the consequences of their own actions. I have seen and read all about violence all my life. I have yet to go off yet. Because my brain has the reality switch. Not all people do as we all know. People use many things irresponsibly... weapons, drugs, alcohol, etc. etc. I don't mind a little guidance in my life but stop with the constant we need to censor games/books/movies, prohibit alcohol. Ok, I added the last one. Still. Lets try an old concept. It has always been a sticky one but here it is.

F8CKING RESPONSIBILTY. STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR SHITTY DECISIONS IN YOUR LIFE!!! FOR ONCE STAND UP AND SAY I DID IT, BECAUSE I WANTED TO!!!

The preceeding has been an unpaid advertisement to prevent IRRESPONSIBLE, INCONSIDERATE F8CKS FROM SCREWING UP AND FUBAR'ING THE FREEDOMS WE ENJOY.

Seriously, lighten up you homicidal bitches.

This kind of crap is just idiotic. Oh, video games did it. Whatever. Just like that kind in Florida who killed a little girl and they blamed wrestling.

I think it boils down to lack of discipline. I grew up watching horror movies, playing Mortal Kombat, watching wrestling, was far from popular in school, and I never wacked out and killed a bunch of people, or threated to take my dads firearms and shoot up a school etc. These days you can spank a kid w/o worrying about being sued. My dad whipped my brothers ass because he was shoplifting. My bro's friend called the cops and my brother told them he (my bro) deserved it, and that was th end of it. I think some of these kids need a good asswhipping and that is why they pull this crap because they never were disciplined right.

This is a pretty damn horrible story, I have to say. The manner of it all is so... disturbing.

But, in response to some of the replies, I am tired of hearing people leap to the defence of video games every time a story like this is reported. It seems almost insensitive to look at this as an attack on the industry we're part of, when it is nothing more than a sad story - something we shouldn't lose sight of.

Yep. Forgot about ol' Elmer. My wife is a teacher and she and I both agree that things nowadays are so out of hand. It's stuff like this that just makes watching the news depressing.

I just feel like belt-sanding this kid's face off, then leaving him in a dumpster would be a good idea. I guess that's why I'm not King of Earth yet.

I'm surprised there is no mention of Jack Thompson in this post yet. The guy is going to have a field day talking about this incident. I expect more crazy "video games are the devil" talk will commence post haste.

I'm sure he will get his 2 cents in , and then some.

Of course the positive articles on gaming don't get nearly as much press. Of course, nothing surprises me in this regard either.

Same here. You are on the short list of people I would want as my second-in-command.

The only thing getting older than hearing about the media blaming videogames, is listening to gamers go nuts at every news bit that mentions videogames as leading to violence.

Both sides need to give it a rest in my opinion.

I hereby dub you folks my second and third in command. We will draw straws shortly to see which is which.

I'd vote for ya!

You don't vote for King. I am your king. Kneel before me, peasant.

I got to be king by exploiting the workers- by hanging on to our outdated imperialist dogma which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society!

Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!

I don't know, they may have an argument here. I mean, just the other day I covered a basketball with rubber cement and just started rolling it around, trying to get stuff to stick to it. The King of the Cosmos will be so pleased...
