Breakout, the original Apple I, the man is an icon, a god, a man among men. Great to see he's still friends with Jobs.

Woz gave a talk at the 2004 CGE. Seems like GB Tetris is his most played game. He was fond of holding the Nintendo Power record for months and months, even submitted photos with phony names after they disqualified him to give others a chance :)

What keen, neat-o story !
Wonder if he got a standing "O" when he arrived onstage.
He certainly deserves it ....

He did and he did. I was at that CGE and initially indifferent to listening to Woz's speech. I had nothing against the guy. I just wasn't a big Apple afficionado. So Altairboy talked me into sitting in anyway and I'm glad he did. Woz is truly a god among the geeks. After a lifetime coming up with cool stuff Woz was a man who still seemed more interested in innovation for its own sake than for generating huge piles of cash. He's also the only real genius I've met whose heart equals the size of his intellect. Woz has a great outlook on life; one I found infectious in the best of ways.
The question is, does he still play his Vectrex? Probably. Hopefully.

C'mon. He's obviously using his Jedi powers to play. These days, playing a Vectrex is about all they're actually any good for anyway... LOL

He did and he did.
Awesome news ....
And how cool is it that in this topic is someone that was actually there at his speech ....
Quick Woz gaming story ....
Nolan Bushnell offered a $100 bonus for every chip that could be eliminated from "Breakout".
Woz & Jobs knocked it down from 80 to 30 -- a $5000 reward.
Jobs told Woz they only got $700, gave Woz $350 & kept the other $4650 for himself.
Woz found out about this years later.
And he cried.
Cried ....
If that doesn't describe his heart, nothing will ....

Woz was asked about that story at CGE2K4 and he quickly stated that he didn't want to talk about it. Later on, after the speech, it was explained that Steve simply wasn't prepared to talk about it (no notes, I guess). That's perfectly understandable since, if I was in that situation, I would want to be very careful about what I said.
Seeing the Woz was pretty cool. After his speech he was available for questions, photographs and autographs. Cool giuy.

Woz is great, someone should point him to this thread and I'll bet he will respond :)
When I got a new iBook, the very first blue clamshell one in 1999 I posted some software config problems I was having on a iBook listserv. Woz wrote to me off-list a few informative emails and fixed my problem. Seems like he occasionally got brand new Apple machines a few weeks before they were released to the public so he was already an expert on them when they came out. 8-)

I was a little bummed... I was trying to talk to him (he mentioned "the last Apple ][" at some point, and I wanted to ask him about the VTech laptop educational computer that used Apple ][ apps on cartridge), but never got the chance, while others got autographs etc. I either picked the wrong place to stand and/or should have been more forceful I guess.

Not a bad idea, though the "Ask Woz" link at woz.org currently says "Hold off emailing me for a while please! Must catch up. Can't breathe.", so that's not going to work right now.
I think I've heard of email addresses he uses but can't recall them right now. If anyone knows of any, they might PM me, but I'm okay with not bothering him with it too.

I tend not to do that to protect their privacy, but if I find it in a public place, or he okays it, I will.

I did email Woz once, back in 1999, and he wrote back. I asked him about the design of Breakout (that was shortly after I read about it), and his answer was nicely detailed. I still have a printout of his email over at my parents. :)
I regret not having had the chance of meeting him -- it's too bad he wasn't at CGE 2k5. Oh well...
