****Please do not PM me asking to buy anything. I do not want to dispose of pieces at this time****

I am debating on disposing of a collection I never really play. Can anyone give me an estimate of what I should look for the whole set? I'm up in the air on the whole thing but any info would be great.

Here's the rundown:
Almost complete US NES set. 836 carts not counting disks. I do not have Hot Slots, Peek-A-Boo Poker, Stadium Events or the Myriad 6 in 1.

I do have the yellow Zelda cart, about 15 Fami disks, the Fami disk system (working last I checked) and 2-3 top loaders without the correct controllers. Bunch of misc controllers. Probably a complete ROB in the attic, Vaus controller, 4-play adapter etc.

I know it and have helped write it. Glad you were first to be no help. It does not give a total based on a collection vice single titles. I really do not feel like listing or searching on ebay every single title or clicking on every title to find the price guide listing which also does not list complete vs loose or with manual. Everyone here is well aware a collection gets less than selling singly so I was looking for a good estimate on what I should ask for on the whole load of stuff.

Also the buy/sell FAQ here specifically says to post questions of this nature in the Classic/Modern forums which is what I did.

I say that collection is worth around $6000-8000 depending on who would be interested....that price is for everything all at once. I am sure that it would be different if listed separately.

dtr has it about right, though I'd say maybe a bit lower as a whole package deal (3k-5k tops)

but piecing it out you could make a mint.
espeicaly selling alot of the rarer less playable games and just keeping your favorates.

From someone who buys NES carts regularly, a collection like this would probably fetch about $3500-$4000 for the total. (keep in mind shipping charges well keep some people bidding lower on Ebay, it's gonna weigh a ton!)

And if you decide, we'd happily buy the entire collection! just contact us!

Thanks for everyone's inputs. I'm not really sure whether I'm going to get rid of the collection yet since I know down the road I'll regret it. The info here should help me make a better informed decision. Thanks for your time to look over that long list.

Hey, sorry it came across like that, I was just kidding around. I just meant that a collection of that size is pretty hard to put a value on, other than 'A Lot"

Crazy.
I'd say more in the $9000 range... maybe a little bit higher if you sold it on ebay or something. $5,000 just seems a little low, espessially since you have a bunch of extra stuff that most collectors don't consider part of a NES collection.

Edit: I had to say it:

No problem. I was a little hasty to take offense. No harm, no foul.

I do appreciate everyone's inputs. Now I have to do some serious thinking about selling it so I can finish the Tbird restoration and Fiero engine swap sooner. I am very torn on the whole matter. On the rational side, I know I rarely ever play it and could keep a few games that are common and often played. And on the emotional side, damn that took a long time to put together :)

Indeed. Anything less than $6000 is robbery. If you do a lot, be sure to remember to take out the pirates before posting any sort of auction. And then sell them to me, wink.

The last few almost complete auctions havent really went as high as anyone would think. I think selling in a large lot is the easiest way but the major drawbacks are. Like someone said shipping would be a killer and second theres probally not a lot of people in the gaming community that have 6 to 10 thousand dollars lying around to spend all at once. I agree if you want maxium price out of your collection selling off all the hard to find games individually and the commons in small lots would be the way to go. Im closing in on a cpmplete boxed collectio but probally would never get back what i spent :(

01-31-2006, 02:40 AM
I would say its actual value and what you can expect are two different beasts all together. What its value would be in the range of 7000.00 to $10,000.00. What you could expect would maybe be 1/2 to 3/5 that amount. Something like that would be a hard sale as a group because the number of buyers would quickly evaporate into nothing but buisness and other colectors who would only be picking it up for what ever titles they themselves were missing. I want over half the games on there myself, but I would definitly advise against selling it unless you needed the money that bad. Something like that wont come around again and most of those games are once in a life time finds and once its gone, your chances are nil of ever replacing it.

ClubNinja

Having no input on the value, I would just like to encourage you to sell the stuff. You'll feel VERY good about it once that gigantic package is dumped off.

...selling it so I can finish the Tbird restoration...
What year? My grandpa restored a few and his 56 is a national points winner. I am very interested in the NES setup and i think i could get you some money and some good T-bird parts(55-57). I'm shure this is appeling to you.

Sylentwulf
01-31-2006, 01:34 PM
I'll also agree that as a lot, you're looking at 3k-5k on ebay.
If you sold everything separately, or in smaller lots, you'd roughly double the amount you get (and quadruple the amount of work)

It's a 65 hardtop. Pics are here (http://photobucket.com/albums/v285/Aldavis2/) under T-bird. It is more of a restomod than anything else. New intake, carb, distributor, swapped transmission, headers, valve covers etc etc means it'll never be a points winner. I pllan on driving it - a lot - when it is finished but everything is expensive when you work on the older cars. Bought 2 power steering hoses and a stainless fuel line and it ran almost $150 :(

There are also a few of my 86 Fiero under its heading also. Both sets of pics are very old as the 65 is now running tho not mobile until I re-install the tranny and getr a real exhaust on it. The 85 Fiero in the pictures the wife wrecked :( Sucks since it was the best $200 car I ever had. The 86 Fiero has been lowered with the sport suspension and a pretty good interior. It has a 2.8L V6 but I have a line now on a 3.4DOHC from a Grand Prix GTP. If that doesn't work out I have the option of going with a 350 but think the other is more streetable.

*** btw ignore the chrome air cleaner and the gold valve covers. Both of those are have changed or in process. Just there to keep stuff from falling in the engine. Valve covers are 64 half round style in gunmetal with THUNDERBIRD embossed in them and not sure of the air cleaner but it will not be a $12 Mr Gasket part like it is now :) Also the battery has been changed from a pasteboard box with 'battery' written on it - checking fit and placement umm yeah that is what I was doing :)

As a collector, and apparently not much of a player, wasn't the thrill of the hunt the best part of the collection?

If there's something more pressing that needs your monetary attention, go ahead and sell the lot and start it again sometime down the road. I know a few people have done this simply because they loved the hunt.

What does this mean exactly? I've always wanted to know. I GET what it means. Gotcha, Burnt, busted, etc...but what does pwned stand for?

Sorry to threadjack. I would expect to receive $5000 for that if I was selling it. Obviously breaking it up in smaller auctions would net you a little more, but if you really wanted to maximize your gross sales I'd break it up into smaller "buy it nows". I always seem to do better that way.

I'll give you AAAALLLLLL pig iron for it.

Well, sigh...I'd have to sell off a big chunk of my collection to raise enough cash @_@ Also agreeing with the $6000 minimum, but as we all know finding somebody who would buy all that at once can be a trick. Much easier than listing everything separately on eBay, but think of all the money you could make...

The key difference here is that the pricing question concerns a very large, nearly complete collection of a highly desired system. The pricing threads that usually get smart comments and/or locked are the ones asking how much a Genesis with a few Madden games is worth. These are less-desired and EASILY looked-up cases. Trying to determine a market value for 800+ games at once is a little more engaging and worthwhile.

That said, you're not completely incorrect. There is lopsidedness.

I agree with above posters. This thread is stupid. His collection is worth $6000 today, $4000 tomorrow and $6500 the day after...

What's the point in knowing how much your collection of 800 games theoretically is worth when you're not even planning to sell them? Prices vary so much that it is hard to predict the value of 5 games correctly, let alone such a huge collection. Topic starter is an experienced collector (i presume) so he knows what he paid for the items and what they should be worth approximately. Sell them on eBay and when you are done, you know how much they were worth exactly (in that specific point in time)...

There should be lopsidedness. I am one of those who gets irritated by newbs joining for free estimates just to sell on ebay anyway.

I think long term members should be given deference in these things.

Oh, and Alan, had I not just bought a large collection of NES, I would be in the market for this somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.5K.

I as well was thinking about selling my collection... but then I realized that I would hate myself forever for it!

I can't help with a value, as they fluctuate all the time. But if you do sell, let me know if you sell separately :p

I think scorch56 was speaking in more general terms, not just isolated to this sort of topic.

Doesn't IGN have a a collection spot where you can input all your games and it gives you an estimated value? I thought I saw that on there but I'm not 100% sure. Of course it woudl take a while to get all the games in there, but, it might give you a good idea at a value just for vonersation sake.

.. I was.

I seem to remember a member (doesn't really matter if he was a newb or not).. I don't recall he was asking if someone could give an approximate value to his collection in the eBay forum, I think it was.. beginning of last year. I really wish I could find that thread.. but there are many like it.

Know what happened? All he got was a bunch of comments about how lazy he was to not do the research himself; plugs to sell the DP printed guide and some downright meaness.

I DO remember several people asking him "Why should we do your work for you?" and such; others said "No" in other ways.

Yeah, I don't know how accurate it would be on the stuff he has.

Looking at it, if you sold the 60 games I needed to me, you could get a couple grand just from me for sure ;), then still have 800 games to sell.
Still though, I think you'd prefer it if you kept it. I couldn't imagine spending so much time on something and then getting rid of it.

Taken from a reply-post of mine a couple of months back:

Actually.. the IGN datbase.. as far as prices go.. is no longer being maintained OR updated. A couple of years back when IGN was tied in with a major game retail chain (which one.. escapes me now) they based their estimated values DIRECTLY on what their store "tie-in" charged. In other words.. you used to be able to buy games THROUGH IGN.. but they tied into Gamestop.. or the like.

So.. let's say you had a copy of Chrono Trigger to add to your collection. Once you did.. the value of your collection might go up by say.. $35; and if you bought a copy of CT from their Gamestop pages via IGN.. you'd pay $35 (I know this WAS the case because I thoroughly researched this one evening in their forums and their FAQ, and found this answer.. wondering and asking where they got their values from.). At the time however.. this wasn't very accurate as well. The reason? If you bought that copy of CT from them.. 99.9995% of the time.. you would simply recieve a bare cart. In fact.. the site would show a disclaimer stating the fact that one should realize; and count on getting a bare cart or CD MOST of the time.. as available. I never ordered 8 or 16-bit carts from them for that reason.. because I'm a completist. In fact.. out of about 5 or 6 current-gen titles I ordered.. only 1 ever came with a case and manual.. so I stopped. Now anybody also knows that a copy of CT with box-insert, manual & maps.. in any sort of semi-decent condition is worth.. or will fetch.. A LOT more than $35.. especially on eBay.

When the big game company and IGN stopped supporting each other awhile back.. I think IGN simply kept their pricing database.. and stopped updating it. I think I've pretty much proved that to myself because no matter what games I've added in the past year or so.. they ALWAYS seem to raise my value by never more than $20 to $25 exactly; anymore.

IGN is grossly undervalued in my opinion as well nowdays. Look at my collection.. I have approximately 650 games.. and MANY of mine are rare.. HTF.. or simply "wanted". Divide that 650 into the estimated value of $13,000 and you get about $20 per game.. value; as an average.. but 95% of my games are totally complete. Anybody would tell you that almost any complete "older" game is worth that much.. on a good day.. on eBay (NOT counting sports titles [of which I have NONE] or commons [of which I have few; i.e. Mario, Sonic, DK, etc.]). So you see what I'm getting at here? If all of my games are worth AT LEAST the $20.. but my Snatcher might be $75.. or my Metal Warriors might be $100.. then isn't my collection worth WELL more than $13,000? So I don't use the IGN figure as an accurate quote either.
