I have a launch day 360... it runs alright... no issue sthat i can tell.... BUT

The fan on that thing is as LOUD as HELL!

I mean run two old PS2s and a Dreamcast and it is about that loud...

Is this normal?

Or is mine an over-heater type.... I heard the over-heaters just shut down?

I that true?

Thanks...

You've got 3 cores inside that thing, so it's gotta stay cool.

Yes, it's normal. Mine's loud too. :)

Thats annoying but very normal. I guess it happens when the other cores power up.

Jeez. I had no idea it was that loud. Not sure I could live with that. My new computer is Dual Core and I can barely hear it at all. Is it just the form factor of the Xbox 360 which requires a larger, faster (and thus louder) fan?

It's the cheepness of the fan they chose. The very early model PS2's have the same problem (basicly the prototype models). By the time they went to production, they found a quieter fan (that was still noisy). By the time the ps2 got to version 7 they had found a fairly quiet fan.

The 360's went cheep on the fan, and it's pretty loud.

you can always disable them, but your house might go up in flames.

That would put a SERIOUS crimp in not only my living arrangement (the wife might get pissed)... But my game collection.... Geez.... all of that plastic sure would make a hell of a fire!

Thanks for all of the feedback as well... Bummer it is so loud... i really like the slim psTWO just for that sound lessened reason too!

...as an aside..It sounds like the 360 production is finally comin online!

a friend saw 48 of them at costco in tacoma last night for 480 (2 controllers and game)...

NOW all we need is some MORE GOOD games...

Thanks again all!

Yeah that's exactly it. With you're PC you've got lots of room to move air around and properly cycle the air, but the 360, being a SFF machine needs the fans to push the hot air out at a considerably faster rate.

Sure it's load as hell, but i've actually gotten use to it. But then again my comp sounds like a jet engine so that's saying something.

All in all the 360 drains a shit load of power and the side affect of that power is heat. It's a real bitch but it's not one that's easily avoided. The PS3 will probably be loud as well.

When you compare it to other items the noise can be quite scary.

Oh and as for the OP of this thread. You say LOUD LOUD LOUD FAN on 360, i say LOUD LOUD LOUD FAN on that power supply. Try listening to it some time, that thing is loud too.

Fan on the POWER SUPPLY TOO?

Oh my...

I'll have to give a listen....

funny that the DC was not on that list... it is as well loud.... especially that laser reader...

That's exactly why it isn't on the list. The disc drive was louder then the hounds of hell, but fan wise it was pretty quite.

You might have one of the systems that heats up more than others. I honestly don't think my x360 is louder than any other system. Are you making sure your x360 has plenty of ventilation? Also I noticed on same games, the fan will get louder depending on what game you put in, I'm guessing if the game is very graphic intensive it will put more stress on the processor causing the fan to spin more.

The fans aren't loud, the disc drive is.

Let your 360 sit on the dashboard when an empty drive for a while, you won't hear anything all that loud.

I'll agree with you there, the dvd drive is really loud.

For having at least two fans (that I can see) and a DVD drive, the thing's pretty damn quiet IMO. I personally think my Dreamcast is much more obnoxious. It's the only console I've ever wanted to stfu because its drive can wake up a sleeping family.

If the Xbox 360 can detect that it doesn't have enough ventilation (and thus shuts down), perhaps it can detect it on a level which spins the fans at different speeds accordingly?
