View Full Version : Beverage spills and their destructive aftermath...

In the past couple months I have had 3 major beverage spills at or near my computer/gaming area. One time I backhanded a glass, the next I laid back and took out with my foot, and the most recent time I was just half asleep and knocked it over reaching for it. Luckily it has only claimed a keyboard and made for some sticky cleanups. But boy did they come awfully close to some expensive systems and other equipment.

I am a full time student - work full time - so not having caffeinated (sp) beverages near my equipment is not an option. I keep telling myself I should use resealable containers/cups/glasses or just keep them out of limbs way but I'm too stubborn to bother.

How about you...ever have a disastrous spill?

Yeah, spilled coke on my SNES a long time ago. I screamed like a little girl and mopped it up the best I could. Luckily it was a small spill, and the system still works like a champ. Has a few small brown stains on it though... sigh.

Another time, a friend of mine, knowing how anal I am about my games and stuff, intentionally held his open bottle of sprite over my Sega CD, as if he were about to pour it, to see how I would react. It scared me, but I calmly told him that if he spilled it he would have to buy me a new Sega CD. Of course he just laughed and capped his bottle.

LOL Sure it is. Whether or not you want to exercise that option is another story. Many people work full time and go to school full time and can do without the drinks while playing a game or two, if only to specifically avoid spilling something on 'em. ;) Just down the Dew in the kitchen, then go play the game.

Many, many years ago when I was at school......

There seemed to be a communal copy of Sonic for the MD kicking around our form group. Everyone had borrowed it, and it had been round the houses. Not sure who it did actually originally belong to. Then, one day it dissapears.....

4 months later at the end of term, we're clearing out the crap from our lockers and school bags. It would turn out that the game had dissapeared into the vast blackhole that was my mate's schoolbag. We pulled out the cart: it was missing most of the casing, covered in dried coke, 7up and deodorant from many spillages/leakages, with all manner of crisps, fluff and other crap stuck to it that we weren't sure about.

It still worked though. God knows how, but it played fine. Wouldn't have put it anywhere near my MD though.

dude, just set up a small area near you away from the electronics - mabey even a small table near your chair and keep your drink there

if your too lasy to even do that grab a towel and roll it up in the best area the liquid would go to

your asking for trouble

My Bf kicked a coke onto a few NES games that were waiting to be cleaned up. I wailed and attempted to salvage them. Some soda got on the pins and a little leaked into the casing, but the boards were un-soiled. :beaten:

I keep my sodas in a wooden box on my table/floor if I need something to drink in my game room .
Its just something with a lip so accidental spills stay in there.
Everything has to stay at least 6ft away from my games aswell

when gaming, I usually have my drink on the floor, or beside me on my desk if it's pc gaming.

I've kicked over several drinks, spilling them on the carpet, but that's about it. One time years ago though my dad spilled his beer on my old N64 during one of our Nascar gaming sessions.

I don't even bring beverages into my gaming room. If I wan't a drink, it's a pause to whatever I'm playing followed by a trip to the kitchen.

Oy... a buddy spilled a bottle of beer a few weeks ago. Sitting right under the table was a TEST PS2, SNES, and a saturn with my copy of radiant silvergun inside... I managed to keep the PS2 and Saturn from getting too wet, but the SNES was a total waste.

I think I remember something about oreo cookie crumbs in my MegaMan 2 cartridge and my little sister trying to clean them out with water straight from the faucet.

I spilled some OJ on my N64 back in the day. Still have that one, and the only problem is that the reset button is stuck and you cant press it. I could get a new N64, but I dont really care.

You really shouldn't eat crumbling foods near consoles or games, or drink anything, if you're clumsy.

I wonder if it's possible to get shocked if you weren't careful with your drink.

Yeah, I've spilled drinks on things from time to time. Usually I can open up things like mice and keyboards to clean them (they work better anyway if they're cleaned every once in a while even if nothing is spilled on them). Controllers can be cleaned too, although some controllers don't seem to go back together just right after they've been taken apart. I keep computers and consoles safely out of the way, although that's more for the noise they make than for spill hazards.

One reason I've learned to be careful with drinks around controllers: the analog sticks. The D-pad, buttons, circuitboard, etc., can have the parts disassembled and cleaned. However, if you spill soda in that analog stick mechanism, it will never be the same, because there's no way I know of to take that apart to get at the sticky residue.

Wasn't the SNES's entire design built around the fact that you couldn't rest a glass or bottle on top of it like the old toaster NES...and therefore avoid spilling liquids into the machine?

It wasn't really a spill but the last time I was playing Shining Force for gamegear I was sitting on the edge of the bed drinking a glass of water. I remember being pretty far into the game, reaching over for the water and bringing it to my lips without looking away from the system. Missed and smacked the glass into the side of the Gamegear. The system reset and wiped my save. :/

Besides that incident I've cleaned out many a coke sticky keyboard with a toothbrush. And once had a cat pee on a copy of SMB3. Game survived however.

my response would have been "unless you want to walk out of this house holding your teeth in your hand, youll get away from the game system"
well, except for if the person was my girlfriend, then I would have to just beg and grovel at her feet. LOL

I'm fulltime school/work too. I keep my drinks on a separate end table about 6 feet away from my consoles/games. I also don't drink any caffeinated drinks either, they are for pussies that can't handle the lack of sleep. :P

speaking of spills my dog isn't house trained yet and once pissed right next to me while i was sitting on the floor with my laptop. Result of the splashback: yellow pixels :gag:

Someone also spilled a coke on my genny once. I learned after that fiasco that Coke and reset buttons don't mix. It adds for a nice, slow button return, and a delayed reset.

I really need some gamebits to fix that sucka. They are worth the cost I'm sure but I want the actual screwdrivers, not the hex bits, and recently I haven't been able to find them. I have a few soda submerged "self adhering" carts that could benefit from these also.

Of course the stickiest ingredient in drinks is sugar -- that's why spilled Coke is sticky, but Diet Coke isn't. That being said, the worst spill I ever had involved kool-aid. Spilled it on the top of my computer and it ran down into my desk and through all my drawers. Lost several pictures in a drawer that way; by the time I found them, they were caked together in one big glob. :/

water could have fixed the sticky picture problem. simply soak them in water for a while, and they will separate. I've dealt with that quite a bit. My darn kids with their sticky fingers :)

Haha, I kinda doubt that, but it's hella clever.

Back when I was a wee gamer, probably no older than six or seven, I was doing some gaming on my fairly new snes and genesis, and my little brother (age three or four) was drinking from a sippy cup. When I was done, I turned off the stuff and the lights and left. Next time I went in (prolly not more than an hour, coulda been just 10 minutes) I found my bro's sippy cup knocked over on the table above my systems (they were on the floor) and the orange juice had leaked down...directly onto my sega genesis. I showed my dad and he tried to mop it up, but it had gotten into the power button and it would stick shut. I think it must've hit the boards too, because it stopped working after a while. That was ok though, because my dad replaced it not too long after. It was nice owning a video store for so long, haha. Quick replacements.

GOD YES! I've dump'd over drinks on the coffey table with lots of games on it @_@ "Runs for towel, Shirts, anyting!!"

Soda is the worst, it fizz's up in the cases and whatnot  Controllers, memory cards and whatever else is around. Grrrrrr...
