That's something shifting by Mario Strikers considering it only came out start of December.

Smash Brothers (launch title)

smash brothers wasn't a launch title was it?didn't it come out a month or so later?

I would consider smashbrothers a "launch window" game, since it came out less than a month after the system. Eitherway, it's just splitting hairs...

Mario Sunshine didn't sell that well....then again, it's about time when a game NOT made by Nintendo is number 1

it's also a bundle pack-in game which might account for some of the numbers

Since by beloved Killer 7 didn't make the list, does anyone know how many units it sold?

I own four games off that list:

1. Resident Evil 4
2. Super Mario Sunshine
4. Super Smash Bros. Melee
12. Mario Kart: Double Dash!!

RE4 was the only one purchased in 2005, though. Chaos Field was the only other 2005 release I bought.

Oh dear, Shadow the Hedgie made the list.

Heh, that's crazy. The game has only been out a month, damn.

I hope Sega doesn't keep releasing Shadow games because of this, because honestly, it wasn't that good.

Well, it appears it's selling well since it went to Player's Choice status... this game has been out for how long?

Same for Smash Brothers I guess.

True, but I can't see how? Everyone I met complains about it...Oh well numbers don't lie

Smash Brothers I can totally understand however, that's no surprise

There is not a single million selling game on this list. Even the N64 had a bunch of million sellers toward the end of its shelf life. I realize we are getting close to the end of the life of the GC, but how is it that the best selling titles are all 500K sellers or less? Are these numbers accurate?

there are no 100 percent accurate numbers, like you see with record or movie sales.

I only have..

Resident Evil 4
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Smash Bros. Melee

Not really a big fan of the Mario Party and Mario Sport games.

These would be ytd numbers not total numbers. Ie MArio Sunshine came out in what 2002? And sold 550k in 2005. I'm sure it sold another 450k in the 2 1/2 years between.

Pretty sad, I agree. Not even Metroid 2 make an appearance -- it came out in, what, November '04, so I would have thought it could sell more than 165K in 05. But no Fire Emblem? Battalion Wars? Killer 7? Sad for the GC.

What I think doesn't matter, but this is a message board and we pretend otherwise.

#1 is very pleasing. #2 is rather pleasing; the game didn't exactly have explosive sales, and it's nice to see it steadily gain players. #3 is rather disappointing; strong sales only reinforce the repetitive series, perhaps diverting Nintendo's creative talent. #8 and #10 fall into the same category, but I could care less about EA. #4 is fine; it's nice to have a staple game... even if it can't hold a candle to Nintendo's staple games of the past. I haven't played #5 or #6, so no comment. #7 is a little high, but it's probably just because there isn't much competition. #9, #11, and #13 all suck.

All in all, Nintendo is in its own league, I guess... because Sony/MS's numbers are probably astronomical compared to these. It's cool that only one movie-licensed game made the list, but it's saddening that Mario is filling that void--becoming more of a mascot than a character...

"Wasn't that good" is even being pretty nice. I love my Sonic Games (even Heroes and the Adventure games) but Shadow was painful.

I think it's kind of strange about smash Brothers Melee...

This must be one of the top-selling games of all time for the Gamecube. It was a launch title and it's still #2 four years later? That's amazing!

Question: If Nintendo can put out FOUR Mario Party games AFTER Smash Brothers, why can't they make a SEQUEL to Smash Brothers? It seems like a complete and utter natural.

I can see why there hasn't been another Mario game (kinda) since they obviously take a long time, but a sequel to Smash Brothers wouldn't be nearly as time consuming.

I just find it odd. I'm done now.

Naw, I'll hold my same position with it wasn't that good. I still agree with Famitsu's score of a 31/40. American reviewers beat the shit outta the game when it didn't deserve it.

Yes, the camera and targeting sucked, I understand that to the max.

I find it refreshing that they aren't trying to milk every last dime out of one of their most popular games. One per system is just fine by me :)

what an odd question...

1) Mario Party is made by Hudson
2) a new Mario Party is not anywhere near as much work as a new Smash Brothers
3) Smash Brothers is still selling really really good, why would they release a sequel!?
4) they are already working on a next-gen Smash Brothers

I believe Super Smash Bros. Melee is the best selling Cube game of all time. Hence the price point at $30 still, and the fact it still shows up high on this list.

Quite frankly, I am surprised Mario Kart: Double Dash isn't higher on this list..

Really? What about the fact that almost half (7/15) of those games have "Mario" in the title or as a playable character? :D

(I know what you're getting at though and I do think Nintendo does a good job of keeping their sequels to a high standard and spreading their releases around, party games notwithstanding perhaps).

What an odd question? What an odd STATEMENT.

1. So Hudson just releases Mario Prty games whenever they damn well feel like it? Nintendo is not involved?
2. It's no RPG. Is the entire staff of Nintendo working on Zelda? There have been exactly two Smash Brothers on two consoles. How many Tekkens have there been? Mortal Kombats? Hell, even Powerstone had two games on the DC.
3. Uh, to make more money? Charge full price on a best-selling game? Bring some much-needed excitement to the Gamecube lineup?
4. And?

Anyone else have any insights? I give it to Nintendo for not whoring out their series, but it seems like a no-brainer.

Some of those games only just came out recently, so it may appear hard to believe that they've already sold so many copies. However, you also have to remember that games don't sell at the same frequency all year round. Sales explode before Christmas, and I guess Mario Strikers and Shadow the Hedgehog were part of that explosion.

I find it kind of sad that Mario Sunshine and Smash Brothers are both in the top four though. Their new games can't even outsell games that've been collecting dust on the shelf for three years?
