OK, I think I got 'em all:

Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Mars Matrix
Gunbird 2
Zero Gunner 2
Cannon Spike
Bangai-O
Ikaruga
Twinkle Star Sprites

Any other DC shooties out there I should lay hold of?

EDIT: To clarify that I mean horizontally and/or vertically scrolling shooting games (and not rail shooters such as Rez or Rainbow Cotton) I have changed the thread title. If you think that rail shooters scroll, then we shall have to agree to disagree.

Did you want to count the shooters in compilations like Midway Classics and Namco Museum?

Since you're taking imports:
Rez (Euro), I would say, is a shooter.

Good point, DP. I've already got the Williams and Midway collections and Namco vols. 1-4 in their PSX format releases. I just checked the list and saw that the PSX Williams collection became the DC Midway collection vol. 1, but contained games from both PSX Williams collection and PSX Arcade Party Pack. x_x Interestingly, it looks like the PSX got a larger number of emulated games overall, including everything that the DC got.

Anyway, looking at the titles you mentioned, I saw Defender, Defender II (Stargate), Robotron 2084, Sinistar, Galaxian, and Galaga. I have all of these for PSX, so I'll consider them "covered" for now--maybe I'll pick up those compilations for the DC later if the price is right.

So were there other compilations? And is the list complete except for the aforementioned shmups and proto-shmups found in compilation packs?

Right, kevincure. Rez is a sweet shooter. I've got that one in PS2 format, but I might get it for DC as well someday. I assume that there's no PAL/NTSC compatibility problem with running the euro release in my 'murican DC? EDIT: Oh--I just read the other thread, where geelw points out that it's no problem at all!

Any others?

Add Rez and I think that covers it. God, what a short list. :(

So much potential...

If you are indeed counting imports, I would recommend Rainbow Cotton as well.

Knew I was leaving one out! I put off buying this one new, anyone know how it is?

Rainbow Cotton is okay/pretty good, but it's not as cool as Panorama Cotton on the megadrive.

The anime style graphics are very colorful, and it has goofy Japanese charm (as well as bizarre anime cut scenes). Basically the control is a little floaty and the camera is often right behind Cotton making it a little hard to aim.

I haven't played the 2-D cotton games so I can't compare them...

So I would get it if it's reasonably priced or you like cotton games, but I wouldn't pay top dollar for it...

Cheers,
le geek

Unfortunately, I never played Panorama Cotton on the MD. Going from the Rainbow Cotton screenshots I dug up, it appears that you have a camera behind Cotton and you shoot into the screen. So it appears to be a rail shooter, and it seems more like a Space Harrier, where you move Cotton around to aim your shots and dodge, rather than a Panzer Dragoon or Rez with a fixed position avatar and lock-on cursor, right?

OK, so since I first posted this it looks like the DC has also gotten Border Down and Psyvariar 2, right? Anything else?

Jeez, and they said the DC was dead.

Yeah... you've forgeooten a few of the imports, but you're getting awfully close!

Pales in comparison to the Saturn shotter collection, doesn't it?

i think a few people have mentioned them but you are missing these:

Border Down
Chaos Field
Trizeal
Psyvariar 2
Shikigami no Shiro II

the Dreamcast is still getting shoot 'em ups released for it every few months. I wonder if there are gonna be any more or if Trizeal is the last?

Unfortunately, I fear that Trizeal will indeed be the last commercially released shooter (though many homebrews have been made and I believe that there are some actual homenrew releases coming out that you will be able to buy like Feet Of Fury.)

The only upcoming Dreamcast release is something called "Angel Wish Special Pack"

Looks like a totally incomprehensible dating simulator to me.

Gah!

Senko no Ronde, developed by G-Rev (Border Down), is in arcades on NAOMI hardware and pretty likely (I'd give it a 75% chance) to be the next "last Dreamcast shooter."

REALLY? That would be AWESOME! WE keep getting games that seem to scream "last Dreamcast game ever!" then a few months later we get a new one. I was totally disappointed with that quasi hentai/action shooter that came out a few months ago (forgot the name) and I really don't like Chaos Field so much, but I LOVE Trizeal and I thought it would be a great way formthe Dreamcast to go out. I hope we get another cool shooter!

It's alive! Hallelujah!!

Hmm, I'll be checking out these games soon.

Just out of curiosity, what's the approximate ratio of Saturn shooters (I suppose that includes Taromaru) to DC so far? 5:1?

Yep, 5 to 1 is getting close. Even when you combine the separate Saturn shooters back onto their respective compilation CD's, you still have over 50... this does NOT include Metal Slug-type ground shooters, but it does have Space Harrier-type quasi-3-D shooters.
