Take a look at the CD Player TV Game (http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/ProductLargePic.aspx?imgname=http%3a%2f%2fa583.g.a kamai.net%2f7%2f583%2f175%2f2006012712%2fcache4.jc penney.com%2fimages%2flarge%2f0900631b80d15cb7L.jp g&ReturnURL=PROD%7c446%7c32794%7cDEP%7cG%7cPRD%7c0d0 b86a%7c9%7c12%7cplug+n%27+play%7cToys%7cVideo+Game s%7c32357%7cProductList&PopUpBlocked=true) -- is this just a Famiclone?

I don't know for sure, but I think it's just a famiclone. The description says the cds are pretend:

Game console includes 59 built-in games with 3 pretend game discs. Comes with 2 joysticks for head-to-head competition. Plugs directly into your TV. Plastic. Uses 4 "AA" batteries, not included. Imported from China. Ages 8 and up.

here's another link with more info about the game, and more clones:

My gut instinct is that it's a famiclone. The controllers are the biggest indicator of such. But this is the first time I would have ever seen one with games on CD. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come; that manufacturing carts has gotten too cost-ineffective even for pirates, and now they're going to distro games on CD's? You can probably fit a lot more games on a CD than even a 10,000,000,000,000-in-1 cart. I'd be keeping an eye out for this or similar devices. Very interesting...

CORRECTION: Look at the previous page description here (http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/Products.aspx?DeptID=446&CatID=32794&CatTyp=DEP&ItemTyp=G&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=0d0b86a&ProdSeq=9&ProdCount=12&Cat=plug+n%27+play&Dep=Toys&PCat=Video+Games&PCatID=32357&RefPage=ProductList&mscssid=4311ff8e320eb4c659ad31b73918cc349xMnVNoVza zWxMnVNoVzazo200B78B1F5EC4C0BFD9C6BAB84B56698595BH DP), which says that the discs are only "pretend". Uh-huh. Definite Famiclone, and I would bet every meseta I own on this.

It's just that the screenshot of the Pac-Man like game didn't look familiar -- which isn't a big surprise, as I'm not as well versed in NES/Fami era stuff -- or any of the other games, so I thought MAYBE it was an original. Plus the company does other systems that maybe HAVE to be originals (like their dance pad games).

I haven't yet heard of those VCD/CD famiclones using actual nes-on-a-chips though. From what I hear, they all ust use a very bad emulator with slowdown and choppy framerates. You'd be better off getting a DC or XBox to play games on your TV off a disc :)

I noticed more than that. I also noticed hacked versions of Baseball, Tennis, and Mappy. So I'm quite sure that this thing is just your typical black-market FamiClone. That's basically all I can really say..

Well, it's not a famiclone so much as just a noac machine. I say it's not a famiclone because there is no cart port, but is quite obviously based on the same technology. Semantics, I know.

I couldn't tell if those were hacks or HK originals...though you can zoom in pretty far on the pic.

@Brian -- actually, those discs don't really have the games on them, or so it seems. There might be SOMETHING on them that selects a bank of games though?

@Night -- thanks for confirming... So at least it's mildly interesting in that the games aren't EXACT copies of Fami games...

@rbudrick -- you're right semantically; I was hopeful that this was a dedicated machine with new games, no matter how crappy, instead of playing Fami games/hacks, whether on cart or not.

Thanks guys!
