Alright, when I was a kid, at my local Boys & Girls Club there was this arcade game that I played for hours and hours. Now that I am all grown up, I fondly remember this title and am eager to be able to play it once again. However, I do not remember the name.

Here's my best description:

The game was a shoot that took place in outerspace. The was a scroller, but it was free-roaming. You could scroll both horizontal or vertical.

The backgrounds "wraped around" if you went too far either way.

At the end of each level there was a boss fight with a giant orb.

Please help me out!

I'd say either Blasteroids or Sinistar.

Any chance you have an idea what year the game came out / what year you played it? Maybe not much help though...
