Edit: For your convenience, here's the stats from Magicbox, as Ars would rather talk about how much they are astonished than actually talk about all the numbers. :P
Famitsu conducted a survey with developers, dealers and consumers regarding to current and next-gen consoles.
Which next-generation console will you be most satisfied with in 2006?
Developers:
# PlayStation 3 - 53.7%

# Xbox 360 - 7.9%
Which console will be No. 1 in 2006?

# Revolution - 10.0%
# PSP - 5.0%
# Xbox 360 - 1.7%
Dealers:
# Nintendo DS - 38.3%
# PlayStation 3 - 31.5%
# Revolution - 12.3%

What is the expected retail price of PlayStation 3?

# Consumers: 50,000 yen (US$424) average
What is the expected retail price of Revolution?

# Retailers: 25,000 yen (US$212) average
# Consumers: 30,000 yen (US$255) average
Perhaps not surprisingly, certain consoles (The Nintendo DS, the PS3, and the Revolution) are getting all the love, while the the unpopular consoles got incredibly bad results. Overall, the Japanese think the PSP and the 360 won't have what it takes to compete.
I would guess this betrays a careful cost/benefit analysis being made by every person: getting a "second-best" console is not an option, apparently (whatever happened to friends who own the other systems). Ironically, that's the sort of result you'd usually expect to get when one system's got internet capabilities, but another doesn't - and yet the 360 and PSP both have online capabilities.

Wow.
I love how much Japan hates the PSP, and loves the PS3. Works for me.
Maybe the Japanese Sony fanboys have realized the PSP isn't that swell? Or everyone has, or something. Who knows, they're Japanese.
*waits for someone to take major offense to this, because its bound to happen, even though I'm just being an ass for the fun of it.*

I'm not sure what point the article is trying to make about the PSP. The author seems surprised that only 0.3% of Japanese gamers think the PSP will be the number 1 system for 2006.
Ummm...HELLO...
Not being number 1 means that the PSP is "getting no love"? Huh? Following his logic, I guess people only have the capacity to like one system.

Perhaps the PSP just isn't innovative enough.
And nobody like XBOX there, so that's barely a surprise.

Took another look at the stats.
I find it most interesting that from developers, to retailers, to consumers, expectations of the price of the PS3 or Revolution go up. If anybody's being cynical...interesting. Developers seem slightly more keen on the PSP, but that's because some of them work with the system, and keep up with what their counterparts in the industry are doing...

It's seems as though some people (particularly the author of the Ars Technica post) are misinterpreting most of the stats. The survey primarily deals with opinions as to what system will be most successful in 2006, not which systems are the "best" or the "favorite" amongst gamers.

...i hope sony will kill off the 360 like they did to the dreamcast :hmm:
..the 360 commercials are stupid...who ever came up with that should get fired....the psp..are crappy too
the game system that look the most promising is the ps3. i hope it can live up to the hype..and nintendo still has a bit of the general market with their mario title's...just keep recyling em :image:

So are you saying the 360 is the favorite among gamers in Japan?

LOL No. But the author's reaction to the results seems to indicate he feels the survey was based on popularity. I'd wager that the DS will sell the most systems in Japan in 2006, but it definitely isn't my favorite system (as I'm sure everyone on this board knows already). Thus, it would be incorrect to assume that my vote for the DS was one of preference.

Yeah no kidding. It's really cool when the 360 beats the PSP in the eyes of the conumers.

...
Consumers:
# PlayStation 3 - 40.3%
# Nintendo DS - 32.6%
# PlayStation 2 - 11.8%
# Revolution - 11.5%
# Xbox 360 - 2.5%

I see that kid. But the poll is referring to sales, not personal preference. That should be fairly obvious. Read my personal example above if you don't understand. Hell, I'll quote it for you:

When did i imply it was personal preference?
Yeah no kidding. It's really cool when the 360 beats the PSP in the eyes of the conumers.
I thought beating the PSP clearly implied sales, not personal preference.
Sounds like we've got a good old fashioned miscommunication on our hands.

Based on that exchange it didn't exactly seem like you guys were talking sales numbers ... :hmm: At the very least I'm pretty sure you and GrayFox were talking about different things.

You post the same fanboy BS in just about every thread don't you? If your going to be a Sony fanboy, atleast get your facts right. PS2 didn't kill DC, Sega themselves did.

Like the PS2 before it, you know 70% of it is all hype. I feel bad for you, buying into it

Heh, I don't even know what I meant.
But nevertheless, it is interesting to see anything with the name '360' to have some sort of lead over anything in Japan.

Where's it say that about the PSP? In the stuff you posted, it was only included in the who would be number one section.

Not being number 1 doesn't mean they don't have what it takes to compete.

???, can Sony even make that many PS3 this year to satisfy demand? I'm sure Nintendo can mak many more DSs than Sony can with PS3s, judging by the problem MS is going through, I won't be surprised if Sony runs into the same problem later.
