In honor of Lincoln’s Birthday, I am announcing a contest! It will begin sometime on President’s Day (Monday, February 17th) and end at midnight on Washington’s Birthday (Saturday, February 22nd).

Here are a few details to get you all riled up and ready.

1. On Monday I will post 20 questions. They will be hard! I don’t expect anyone will actually be able to answer them all. (Perhaps I should give a bonus prize for anyone who does?)

2. The questions will not be straightforward trivia questions, but will typically involve playing a game to find the answer (unless you’re really smart!) So it will be a kind of video game “scavenger hunt”. There may also be some identification type questions.

3. You will have until midnight on Saturday (the 22nd) to email the answers to me at metalkeir@yahoo.com. Answer as many as you can.

4. The three people with the most correct answers win! In the event of a tie, the person who submitted their answers first takes precedence. The first place winner will get first pick from the prizes, then the second place winner and finally the third place winner.

5. Prizes? That’s right! Why hold a contest if you’re not going to give away stuff? The prizes are nothing earth-shattering obviously, but there are 7 prizes to choose from so hopefully there will be something for everyone. See them HERE! (http://www.geocities.com/metalkeir/contest.html)

6. Everyone is eligible to win, though you may only submit one entry.

7. Feel free to email me with questions, though I reserve the right to not answer them. You may also post questions and comments here before or during the contest, just don’t give anything away!

This should be fun!

<rubs hands gleefully>

And I'm off on Monday, so that'll give me a full day to get a head-start.

One question: Am I to assume this will encompass many different home consoles, as well as arcade machines?

Keir

I am still working on the questions, but yes I am trying to incorporate as many different systems as I can. No arcade machines though (I'm limited by my own knowledge).

If someone gets all 20 right, then that person needs to be banned because they have no life whatsoever and need to get outside more often.

Here are some more details on the answers:

1. Technically, fabulous is the adjective though I also accepted the full description, “absolutely fabulous”.

2. One day I wanted to see this game had an end and played it for about an hour. I didn't think anyone else had ever played this game for that long and I wanted people to share my pain.

3. This is, of course, from the Starpath Supercharger game, Escape from the Mindmaster. I believe that the Mind Master's ratings are given in increments of 100. A score of 100-199 is "promising", a score of 200-299 is "amusing", etc. I don't know for sure if that's true, but a score of 218 will definitely give you a rank of "amusing", as will a score of 267.

4. I would also accept flying worms, snakes, wriggly things, etc.

5. There are 6 on level 17, 4 on level 18, 6 on level 19 and 5 on level 20 for a total of 21 walls. Playing the game wasn’t even necessary for this one as the maps are all available at <a href=”http://www.atariage.com/2600/archives/HEROMaps/index.html”>Atari Age</a>. It was just a matter of counting the walls that needed to be blown up.

6. I didn’t really think anyone would get this one. You can see a screenshot at Atari Age (”http://www.atariage.com/screenshot_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=455”>AtariAge</a>.

7.), though you would need some knowledge of the game to determine what the objects actually are.

8. This was a Bard’s Tale question. The walls in the Catacombs are decorated with 4 skulls, except for walls with doors which only have one skull. If you knew that, you could have used one of many online maps to determine the answer.

9. One of 3 variations is randomly selected on the level Mystery Maze.

10. Every level in Ultimate Wizard is listed on <a href=”http://www.geocities.com/svipdaag/vidgames/wizard/levels.html”>my site</a>, but figuring out all the levels from Wizard in order to compare them is a bit trickier.

11. The picture shown in the question is just a pixilated version of the box cover. The original picture of the box cover can be seen at Lemon (”).

12. There are 2 hot dogs, 2 bananas and a Mugsy on level 6.

13. The picture is part of the disc sleeve for Ghost Rush.

14. You had to actually climb 6 mountains to get this one, because if you tried starting on Mountain 6, you would just get eggplants. That was why I specified “not necessarily Mountain 6” in the question.

15. Belcher’s his name, Belching’s his game. I think this game is really underrated and chose it for that reason.

16. There are 18 skeletons on the near side and 16 on the far side for a total of 34. The tricky part was trying to stay alive without losing count.

17. I had submitted a review of this game to the <a href=”http://www.classicgaming.com/jlounge/junkman.html”>Jumpman Lounge</a> before the contest began. He posted it on Thursday, so if you looked for the answer after that you most likely would have found it.

18. I wanted to make a harder question, but this is the only game I own and I just got frustrated by all the cheap deaths. I should have noted that level 2 is called Chamber 1 so there would be no confusion, but it wasn’t too hard to figure out.

19. Each Droid Force consists of several waves of ships. The second “wave” is actually still Droid Force 1. When you finally reach Droid Force 2, you get a little message and a bonus, and then you face 10 Droid Ships.

20. Galactic Pinball has several different “tables” you can play. In Colony, there are 7 targets that will earn you bonus points when hit in order. Mercury is the second target and is worth 200,000 points.

13. The picture is part of the disc sleeve for Ghost Rush.

Well, hell, I knew that. I thought you wanted the name of the specific ghost. It doesn't matter anyway, though. One more right answer wouldn't have changed my standings.
