I'm thinking of having my SCPH 5501 PSX modded to play JPN and US games. Maybe some PAL titles perhaps.

What steps must I take to do this?

Does anyone know of someone who can mod this type of PSX?

You don't need to mod it. If you have the classic bulk ones. Do what I did. Put in a U.S game, once it gets to the black PS screen, take out disc, place in import game. And it's done.

Oh, and you'll have to put on something that would press the button located in the upper right in to keep the disc spinning. I used a toothpick with tape.

I don't think they've made a Playstation that you can single swap on since 1996. At best, you're going to have to double swap on more recent systems...it's just more convenient to install a modchip and never have to worry about it at all.

Recently I've been kicking around the idea of getting a PSOne and modding it. Those little bastards are so small and nice looking...I could squeek one under the tv along with a PStwo and be golden.

Hmm....but then I'd have to buy a PStwo and mod it as well...hmmm... tempting.

if your ps1 has the parallel port at the back get one of those APR device attached to that port.
it will allow you to run import as well as backups...

there was even a kit to install the parallel port to the later big ps1 models mssing the port but it'd be hard to come by nowadays...

OSG is repairing my broken PS1, mod chipping it, and putting it in a new translucent smoke black case, for pretty cheap too!

Getting a swap disc or having OSG mod it costs just about the same, so it's really up to you.

I used to swap discs with the Game Enhancers. The swapping bit got old real fast and it also kills the laser motor quicker. If you have a steady hand, modding a psx isnt too bad compared to the new consoles. It's like 7-8 wires max compared to 17-24 wires for ps2.

A CD only GameShark will work for Jap games...you can get PAL games to work via a boot disk after the GameShark. But that gets messy and doesn't always work.

For $40 with shipping I'm getting a Modded PSX (old style mod chip) that plays imports and backups.

The problem is that the Mod Chip won't play games that has the anti-mod BS in it. Luckly for those games I can just download and burn a simple boot disc and boom, problem solve!

I've modded about 10 or so of the systems. Its not that hard of a mod if you have some soldering skills as the contact points are fairly large.
