This game is great fun, and even though my ship blows up often, I never find myself cursing the game or anything... it's always "oh that was my bad." I even enjoy looking forward to going BACK to the beginning of the level, as proper severe punishment of screwing up late in the stages. That's how you discipline your kids and teach them the error of their ways! LOL

God what a game. If only the slowdown wasn't there... but sometimes it helps! Example: stage 2 when the three platforms are moving, regular speed it's a bitch slowdown (just shoot!) and it's easy.

Any memories/rants on this game?

This was the most easy R-Type I ever owned. As it's the only one I ever beat on normal dificulty, that says alot. If you enjoy this, try R-Type III as well. Good luck finding it though.

One of my favorite SNES shmups. I hate getting sent back to the beginning of a stage when I die, though.

I still think the gameboy R-type was the best and stage 4 was the hardest.

The first time I played R-Type was on the Amiga computer and I was instintly hooked. I then since owned every R-Type game for every system. I think Super R-Type is probably the best R-Type game of the series. R-Type 3 is a goodie as well. Too bad they dont make new R-type games any more :( It is one of the most under rated games out.

R-Type Final = last R-Type game = no more new R-Type games coming. Thanks!

R-Type has always been my shooter of choice. I first fell in love back on the SMS. Horrible and I mean horribel slowdown but it seemed to actually help you out duriing gameplay! Ha...the 3rd level with the giant ship is a classic amoung all shootemups.

R-type is indeed a pretty cool serie. The worse (what I played) must be for GBC. The ship moves so fucking slow. Maybe you get speed-up powerups later, but I never really gotten into it because of this.

I played this game when I was 6 for two freaking weeks! It was one of my favorite times of my life!

I remember how amazing this game was when released. The screenshots released in Nintendo Power before the SNES launch were jaw-dropping. Unfortunately, the game is a little too easy and there is noticable slowdown.

R-Type III on SNES is pretty but brutal. Lots of cheap hits, and starting back at a "checkpoint" is beyond cheap-ass. Yet, it's still a cool game.

R-Type was one of my favorites for the Master System. I've loved the series all the way through to Final.

Super R-Type is basically a port of R-Type II for the arcade. I have this game and it is a decent game. The thing that I don't like about this game is that it slows down too much. It gets very annoying after awhile. If you want a real challenge, get Gradius III & IV for PS2. I can actually beat Gradius III, but that is because you can save the game.

I find it amazing how we all play the same game and come away with different overall perspective of the different games. Super rtype did nothing for me and clearly had issues. Rtype3 I thought was more superior in every way.

I remember reading in magazines in the early 90's proclaiming the turbo rtype as the purest arcade translation. much praise was bestowed on that version

This was a really nice game, although I appreciate most scrolling flying games that shoot crap down in any way possible. It's a game that is quite difficult to play when there's lag, but otherwise it's fun even if you're just watching another person play.

Damn, if only my R-Type site I did for school was still up!

I went over almost every game and port I could find. I didn't speak very well of Super R-Type, but I sure did love R-Type 3 and R-Type Final.

And SMS R-Type wins for having a special SMS-only level.

I love the R-Type series, but Super R-Type was my least favorite of the bunch. The early SNES game slowdown problem made this game almost too easy. And some stages, unplayable.

If they could've beat the slowdown problem, this game would be excellent.

Anyone ever play the Spectrum version of R-Type? Amazing achievement for a humble 48k system.
