I know of Shadowgate and Maniac Mansion but what other games are like those for the nes?

Tombs and Treasures, which was made by Falcom (Ys series).

Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. A strange (but good) game that plays similar to Uninvited.

Deja Vu & Uninvited are some of my all-time favourite games. I wish there were more titles like 'em.
Kemco - Seika was supposed to have ported Ace Harding: Lost In Las Vegas (a sequel to Deja Vu) to the NES , but the port was never completed, for reasons unknown.
I started a thread on Deja Vu 2 .... do a search for it if you feel like it.

Agreed. You might also want to take a look at Nightshade, terribly underrated.
Some DS games come a bit close. Memory Trace, and Phenoix Wright.
