Too often on this fora I see
OP - "I have a problem"
Reply-"Do paypal or credit card chargeback"
OP - "Can't. I used cash [or money order][or check]"
Why do people use payment methods that lack protection if Seller = Scammer? I would never buy off Ebay (or any store) without some kind of protection-- like a credit card.

Because if you use your PayPal balance, there is a still a chance you will get screwed.

1-- Don't use your paypal balance. Use credit card.
2-- You have Paypal protecting you from Scamming Sellers.
3-- Or credit card protection- if PP does not help you.
VERSUS-- Money order or check which provides no protection

Strange though it may sound to an ebay late-comer such as yourself, when eBay started there was no protected payment method generally available. Paypal did not exist. People buy without protection for the same reason that they cross the road - they are aware that the risk is fairly minimal.
Furthermore, eBay themselves offer protection on purchases - you can recover up to £120 (minus a £15 excess) from ebay's insurance if you buy and don't get what you paid for.
As your own experiences have shown, using Paypal does not make you immune to underhand charges ... and as many people will tell you, using Paypal is not a guarantee in itself of anything. Paypal happily screws over buyers and sellers on a regular basis.
Welcome to the world of non-competition. Roll on Google Wallet :/

I second that.
You can get royally screwed no matter what you used. Out of 200 plus transactions I lost money on about 6 of them 1 money order 5 paypal.
Out of the paypal transactions I received zero refunded.
according to paypal they are still agressively trying to recover my funds.
I never did chargebacks I didnt know about them until well after my 3 loss.
Paypals gravy train days are numbered. There will come a time when they will have to be more accountable and can't hide behind the we process too many daily transaction and can't be the police or lose you through the loopholes of fineprint.
My take is you offer the service you should offer better aggreesive prosecution of blatent scam artist.
The wrong people haven't been ripped off yet.

Ive had several problems from buyers, and one attempted scam whilst using PayPal
With regards to postal methods of payments, and other online payment services - absolutely ZERO problems..
So you see, eBay tout PayPal as being the all-singing-all-dancing way to pay, the ultimate in safety and speed, when really its probably less safe than other methods of payment.. it doesnt take a genius to figure out they hype it up and pimp it constantly as its further lining their rather large fat-cat pockets..!
OH, and Meg Whitman (eBay CEO?) wants Europe to harmonise its trading and importing laws (So that people using eBay can trade together easier) guess what, therefore lining eBays pockets with even more money.. lol

Okay but paypal or credit card you have a CHANCE to get refunded. I just got back $20 via a Paypal dispute. And $40 via Credit Card chargeback. (damaged games)
Had I paid with Check. I'd never see that money.
Paypal / credit card = Some protection which is better than no protection.

you can always use escrow service. But it takes longer.

How does Escrow protect someone (like me) from a Seller advertising "mint" and instead sending damaged games? I've never used Escrow.
