We've all been there. You're at a thrift, flea market, etc. You're looking through a pile of games, and one catches your eye. Your heart starts to race. You think you finally, FINALLY found a grail in the wild, or at least something that will get you a few approving nods on DP.
You rush home, open up the browser, fire up www.digitpress.com, and click on the rarity guide. Hmm, only an R3. I coulda sworn that....well, maybe it's one of those games that sells for major $ on ebay. The guide's not always right, right? Right?
www.ebay.com....hmm, seems a ton of them are on here. A quick glance at the completed auctions shows that several have gone unsold for BIN's of less than $5. Frustrated and feeling less than intelligent, you throw the game across the room, landing in your "trade" pile.
What games have thrown you for the rarity loop?

For me, it was the Wisdom Tree NES games. I found a Bible Adventures at a flea market once when I first started collecting, and I thought for sure the $5 or so I paid for it was a steal. Later, I found out where I could get sealed copies of all those games for $15 or so. Wasn't one of my shining moments :)

I bought a boxed Game.com with four games for £5. I felt completely ripped off.

Catrap for Game Boy. I was really suprised to find that DP says it's an R3, because I've only seen one in the wild the past 5 years or so.

I picked up a sealed copy of Nester's Funky Bowling for the Virtual Boy thinking is was rare. It turns out it was Virtual Bowling for the VB that was rare. I paid less than $10 for it so I still think I got a decent deal.

Final Fantasy V for the SFC .... got it for 7$ and I still think it's rare in the states... it wasnt released here and it's in its original cartridge format. I think the game is cursed. I always try to sell it [like 4 times already] and it never sells!
I remember back in hi skool [mid to late 90s] this game was listed in the back of EGM for like 79$ in those import store ads
Ah well

I bought Rhapsody and Persona 2 at the local EB back in December... before I heard about the reprints and saw copies upon copies of those two everywhere.
Other than that, probably back in fall 98 when I saw started collecting and saw Camerica games for the first time. Thought for sure they were super rare or something. Still though, 4 bucks apiece for Micro Machines and 2 others wasn't bad.

I did the same exact thing, except mine's still sitting in my tradebox, unsold and unloved. Nobody wants it! LOL I also bought a copy of Micro Machines for NES for around $20, thinking it was rare.

I can't remember if it is "Tooth Protectors" or "Plaque Attack" that is rare....I always forget.
Anyways I went into a store and saw (the one that isn't rare) for $15 sealed! Wow, I thought, how can you go wrong? Well I was entirely wrong, it was probably worth 5 bucks total.
Luckily for me it was factory sealed and I could return it! ;)

I bought a complete copy of Blazing Dragons on Saturn for $15 a few months back thinking it was rare. It was Burning Rangers I had in mind. Later, I almost did the same thing with Blazing Heroes. Stupid soundalike game titles.
Anyway, a few weeks after that gaffe I sold it for $1.49. I don't even have a Saturn (yet).
A Wonderswan with 2 games for €75 :-P .
Beginners mistake!

The first time I saw Atari carts in the wild, I couldn't beleive it because I thought that they were really rare (I had just started collecting). I bought a bunch of them for $5 each, for a total of around $50. Games were something like Combat, ET, Yars Revenge, Missile Command, etc...

I just bought a boxed Sega Saturn with the three pack of free games for $60.00, and I feel I overpaid after seeing it's basically worth about $25.00.
But I've wanted one since it came out, and I've seen one maybe three times since then, never boxed. So I've still fulfilled a personal goal.

I think for me it would be picking up Super Famicom versions of Chrono Trigger & the Final Fantasy games. Luckily I didn't pay too much for them but it took me a while to get rid of them!

Kawasaki Caribbean Challenge for SNES a few months ago. I was suprised to see it was only an R4. No big deal though, as I didn't buy it because I thought it was rare, but because it was a buck and I rarely turn down racing games at that price.

Four years ago...
I remember reading about ALIEN SOLDIER for the Mega Drive and how it was such a great and rare game and all. I remember the article saying something about a USA release that was cancelled but rumors still persisted.
I saw the Genesis version of the game at a store a while back and about shit myself. The holy grail! It WAS released in the USA! I had proof! And for only $15!!!
