not sure where to put this, here or classic gaming, but heres my question:

im really in the mood for some kind of old school rpg for the pc. anyone know a good one i can download? i prefer isometric graphics but ill play anything as long as its fun. any pc rpg that i can readily download would be awesome.

thanks in advance.

edit:

this is turning out pretty cool, i recommend others to try the games submitted here, they are quite fun. However i was looking for something thats more actually a full release game, like fallout or the later ultima games. i dont even mind paying, i just want something quality.

Why download when you can play Kingdom of Loathing (http://www.kingdomofloathing.com) entirely online? It's one of the best PC RPG's I've played in years, simplicity and all. Other than that, I got nothin'.[/url]

I have started to play criminalcountry. It is a text based RPG. I am not sure it is what you are looking for. I have just started playing and it is alright. Link below. Looking for other suggestions like you are too!

You could go to www.digitalmzx.net and get the current version of Megazeux and download my 1997 "classics" Doomsday Dream Legend 1+2 (ignore the 1 star rating it got - that guy makes me LOL).

Nethack and any one of dozens of Angband/Moria variants should keep you busy for a dangerously long time if you're into more D&D style RPG play. Dig around Google. And don't say I didn't warn you.

Ultima IV is available for free for Linux... It's as old school as old school gets, and 100%, legitimately licensed free.

I recommend trying out the Magic Candle, but be prepared to take notes. It's sort of like Ultima in presentation, but is kind of its own thing. Definitely one of the best old school rpg series around. Get it from Home of the Underdogs.

Hard Nova is a great sci-fi rpg in the old style if you're in the mood. It's also available from Underdogs.

I'm surprised these two weren't mentioned yet - The original Arena Elder Scrolls is also 100% legally free, you can download it directly from Bethesda's site. Same with Betryal at Krondor (Sierra) Both are the full games, and highly recommended.

talking about elder scrolls, while not Free here in australia
Morrowind GOTY is out soon for $19.95AU which is a steal
check around as you can buy just the original game without
the expansion packs for a very very little amount.

Trust me when I say this game is HUGE.

Betrayal At Krondor - total quality
Elder Scrolls Arena - excellent game and intro to the series. More emphasis on combat and dungeon crawling than Krondor though.

<3 freeware.

I recall seeing a 20+MB download for Icewind Dale back around 1997/98...isn't that game freeware?

Probably a patch. ID came on 2 CDs.

Planescape: Torment is absolutely stellar. No downloadable version, but a CD version will only run you about $10, max. Best plot and characters in any RPG I've played to date, PC or consoles.

I think that was the free expansion + patch that rolled out. Still a pretty cool thing of them to do.

Seconding Dink Smallwood. That game was a hell of a lot of fun, and I was always disappointed that the community never really churned out any really good expansions for it.

Eww. LOL Just remember, more of Ultima VII is what people were wanting when that came out. And that should be fairly inexpensive.

And they aren't isometric, but the Might and Magic series shouldn't be missed. The "Special Edition" of 6 should run less than $15 shipped, and comes with 1-5 as a bonus.

For DosBox, I just started using DFend. It makes for a much more user-friendly process when you have to resort to tweaking and retweaking settings in DosBox for certain games.

EDIT: Just remembered that Ultimas 7 and 8 had weird things going on with how they managed computer memory. I know Exult (http://exult.sourceforge.net/) was written specifically for Ultima 7 on modern PCs, and Pentagram (http://pentagram.sourceforge.net/) is for Ultima 8. Pentagram isn't as far in development, though, so you might be SOL running U8 in XP.

Way before Exult was worth using, someone wrote the neat little hacks "U7Win (http://members.iinet.net.au/~rsd/five.html)" and "U8Win (http://members.iinet.net.au/~rsd/six.html)" that allowed people to play the games in Windows95+. With WindowsXP, you'll need to run VDMSound (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=2071). but with a little bit of work it should be dandy :)

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure myself but google search for "Home of the Underdogs". They've got a ton of older, now freeware games available for download. Some pretty good stuff there, some lame, but take a look for yourself.

They don't put a whole lot of freeware up there, they mostly stick with warez'd copies of games. A lot of times they'll still leave them in the multiple 1.44mb zips that warez groups would put them in back in the early-mid 90s along with the original NFO files. Brings back great memories of the Usenet from that era, but it's a pretty crappy way to preserve and distribute games under the guise of "preserving them".

I especially love when they put up CD rips of games that are devoid of the cinemas, music, high resolution textures, etc. Especially notable is Realms of the Haunting, a 4cd game that got ripped down to ~34 megs.

You're better off getting your warez from somewhere else other than THotU.

Eh, sorry about that. I haven't looked there in a while. I just remembered it being freeware / abandonware, at least for the games I was looking for. Scratch my prior comment from the record. :)
