$25 loose? I'm not *sure* on its going rate but I know it's a bit more than 25. BTW is $50 a good deal for it game only?

I'm am no expert by any means but I will say this. I feel the game is worth 50 bucks with or without the box, it's freakin' amazing.
Second 25 bucks and the comment on the guide that it is common insults me LOL
And third I'll put the price into perspective for you. I spent 5 years searching for earthbound, nothing hardcore mind you. Yard sale here and there (came out with a lot of other good stuff though) Always asking in some local game shops and having them all laugh at me, and then finally the day arrived, earthbound loose but right there in front of me like it was 5 years ago when a friend loaned it to me, and all I could do was mutter gibberish and look like a fool. I was the happiest person on the planet right then... 50 bucks was so worth the adventure!
I don't know about a lot of the people here but I half the time look for game (good ones of course, ones I do want) just for the adventure! I could easily go to ebay and get every game I want tonight, but where is the fun in that. If you have been looking for the game and want to play something amazing, I would say yeah go ahead and get it.
I saw the game once in 5 years, some of these guys probably see it every month, it's all where you live. Good luck with what ever decision you do make!

It all boils down to the plain fact that a game is worth what it is wroth to YOU.
If you really love the game and are willing to spend $50, well then it turns out not to really be all that much in retrospect. I honestly hate the idea of certain prices being pinned on any videogame not on the market anymore.
I recently purchased Mega Man X3 on ebay (loose). Great condition of course, but it ran me nearly $70. Was it worth it? I think so...because I really love that game. Besides, I've spent that much on nonsense in the past anyway :)

I don't think it is very as far as print run goes, most people won't sell it because of how popular it is so it never turns up in stores but on Ebay and personal collections it is pretty common. I think $25 is a bit low, but 50 is high I would bet $35 to $40 would be a fair estimate as far as value.

It all depends on which market is used to judge it's value. The DP guide is typically on the convervative side. It's not a Ebay guide. They don't follow the up and down swings in game prices.
Having said all of that, try to actually acquire a loose Earthbound for less than $40, and good freaking luck with that. You won't even be able to get one that is missing half it's label and has tons of rental stickers all over it. I do think that many times the DP guide is a little too conservative. In the case of Earthbound, this game typically sells in the $52 to $71 range loose. Now you might come into contact with somebody on some forum and they have a extra copy of Earthbound, in less than ideal condition and they are willing to sell it to you for $40, but that is about the only way you are going to get it for below $52.
I think the DP guide should have the value at $40 loose. More often than not, this game is sold for $60 loose, so if the DP guide is $40 loose, I think that is still rather conservative.

Hmmm...I need to check the prices on ebay, I guess. :-P
I easily scored a loose copy a year or so ago for $25.
The game IS pretty common; there is no shortage of copies for sale on Ebay all the time.
Just because something is pricey, that doesnt been its rare.

My older brother picked up a copy for $3 at a pawn shop last year. When he walked into my room and showed me the cart, I was like O.O "ZOMFG!!" Of course, this is the same pawn shop that he got a copy of TaleS Of Destiny from for $5.

I have a complete boxed copy and a loose copy of the game, and I value it loose in the $50 range (if I ever decided to sell my loose one I'd start the bidding at $50). Complete/Sealed is a different story. I've gotten offers up to $150 for my complete one, and would personally be willing to pay up to $250-$300 for it factory sealed easy.
I wouldn't even say as a "rare item" it's worth that much, it's more of a matter of fact of how incredible the game is. If you've ever sat down and put a serious amount of time going through every nook and cranny of the game you'll know what I mean when I say that the game can seriously end up being something you can be emotionally attached to.
