I understand the need to protect your IP but god damn. I just picked up C&C The First Decade and was horrified to discover that in order to install it i needed 7 cd keys. 1 for C&C The First Decade and 6 for various games contained within the compilation.
It's just ridiculous. I can't think of any other game or compliation requiring that many keys.

Yeah I picked it up to today and am really surprised that it needed that many keys
I understand that each of those games needed keys originally
so that's probaly the main reason it's like that but still kind of crazy
o well, It should be a good hopefully the multiplayer settings are intacted on all the games.

It is the original. Falsely interlaced CGI, lower resolutioned C&C at it's absolute finest.

Didn't they include the Win95 version?

The original commando from the first C&C was the man. That's why C&C: Renegade was so frickin' awesome - that first cutscene where the old C&C map morphed into a 3D, FPS map was beyond awesome.
And he even used some of the old lines (but not my favorite one: "That was left-handed!").
IMO, C&C was the 2nd greatest, and Red Alert was the greatest of the series. Everything went downhill from there, with the exception of Renegade (which would be a great game multiplayer, if cheating weren't so rampant there).

Red Alert, Red Alert 2, and the original C&C ate up most of my middle and high school years. All classic, classic games. RA2 is still the one I go back to and play the most, with the Yuri's Revenge expansion. (Hooray Udo Kier!)
Renegade was also amazing multiplayer... anyone know if there are many servers still up? I'll have to search for my disc.

There are some servers still up, Austin, but like I said: cheating is fairly rampant. EA's not making a lot of money off the game any more, so they really don't care too much about patching the cheats. I've gone in there and there are guys who destroy a Mammoth Tank in one shot with like a machine gun or something like that. It's lame, and a shame - the game was really fun without the cheating.

They've all been updated to run natively under WinXP but aside from that they are the original games.

If I remember correctly, the Win95 version was a better resolution :(

Damn, that's a real shame. The game was really fun.

What? No Sole Survivor?
There's a game that's best left forgotten. Then again, I didn't like Renegade's single player at all (the first level or two was pretty damn fun but then it went straight downhill). The multiplayer was fucking awesome, though. A bit on the unbalanced side and the cheaters were a bunch of shit-eaters, but with a group of friends / honest players, it was whip-cream-covered-tits.
It's a shame they didn't update the games to all use just one CD key (the one that it comes with) or better yet, not require any cd key after the main one had been put in. That's incredibly lazy, and no doubt there's additional copy protection at work as well.
Looks like I'm just going to stick with my original copies of the games :(

Wow, god damn. That's a rediculous amount of cd keys. It looked like a sweet compilation for 40 bucks, but I alerady own every single C&C game and expansion. I'm surprised I own so many damn C&C games, but when I got home and counted them up off the shelf, I had em all.

I have a C&C collection that includes C&C and its expansions along with Red Alert and its expansions as well. None of the newer games. This may be something I will want to pick up, even with its insane key system.

Stupid question: I assume all of the games are pre-patched and up-to-date? Also, does it install any of the many bonus packs Westwood and EA hav e released over the years? Would be great if it did!

Definitely pre-patched and up to date. Most had be re-written to support XP. The Expansion packs like Covert ops, Yuri's Revenge and Zero hour are all there, but little map packs realese over the years didn't make the cut.

Well, being patched and as up to date as it gets is good. It would have been really sloppy of EA if they weren't, though. Full XP support might mean a few niggles... I hear there is a patch already on the way. It is a shame about the map packs, and such... having EVERYTHING installed from one gigantic DVD would have totally rocked.
Still pretty tempted though :)

It really is worth the money. I mean for $39.99 you get 12 C&C games and expansions, all updated to run in XP, and you get a second DVD with interviews and some background info on the C&C series. It's not much, only about 45 mins of content, but it's still really nice.

Did any of the earlier games use authservers? Like a server checks if the CD-key is valid and will let you play online. Maybe this is why they had to have 1 cd-key for each game.

I keep thinking they've missed one of the C&C or Red Alert add-ons... I'm sure they have... but it isn't coming to me.

Yes there is one game missing from the list. C&C Red Alert: Retaliation. But it's a PSX game so it doen't count. Every PC game is there.

I agree it's definitly worth the money
I love the package though my RedAlert Soviet side won't show the movies
so that sucks but there are fixes for it.
Still a great package.

Jon: Did I know you bought First Decade? You kept that one quiet, or I have an awful memory.

No, that wasn't the one (or Sole S) that I was thinking of. I keep thinking that the original C&C had two expansions... it didn't, did it?

Not it only had the Covert Ops. Although Red Alert wasoriginally suppose to be an expansion.
I had the original C+C pixels horray!
