Ive taken a big hit in my video game related stocks - the reason given is people have purchsed less product because of anticipation for the next gen products

during the winter i have been keeping tabs at the stores in my state and everyone has been telling me new product has been flying off the shelves - so i had a good feeling about that quater - and felt that the analists have been full of shit trying to better thier positions in the market - and it freking was true.

yes i made a mistake in just looking at my state - but i did talk to people in other states and they have observed the same thing

so basicaly what im asking in this poll is - yes/no - did you buy less video game product this winter - and if you could give a reason that would be nice to ( like yes i purchased less because of anitcipation of the next gen)

im aware that this place is filled with hard core gamers and the answer may be no but still im curious

i think this was a good lesson for for the next time around

thanks for participating

Edit: i personaly did not change in anticipation of anything so my answer is no - actualy i think i purchased more this year than last

Interesting.

I think I did buy less in the lead-up to Christmas than I thought I would, but it was probably more than any other year to be honest. I'm certainly not waiting on any next-gen systems or games, I just think that the time of year (Christmas, etc) leaves you with less money than normal, a lot of people (perhaps more than ever) wait for the January sales now, and I think the number of quality titles were a little lower than I had hoped.

Since sports games top a lot of best-selling sales data, it wouldn't surprise me - since they are the most common to hit all the platforms, including next-gen - that people held off and waited for the best version (which, as it turned out, wasn't the next-gen efforts in a lot of cases).

In truth, I wish I bought more last year, but I don't think Christmas is always a great time to buy. Sure, there are some special deals going on, but some stores/publishers push their prices up!

i have cut back due to my lack of employment since november. i started a new job this month, so the buying spree will likely go back up.

but i rarely buy new games, so the money i put into the industry only indirectly goes to publishers. i doubt there is a forumula but you can roughly estimate that only half the dollars i spend on a used game (at a place like EB/Gamestop/Gamecrazy) will find its way into buying new product... probably even less.

I have bought almost nothing in the past 3 months - the only thing that comes to mind was $40 for Space Rangers 2 in November, and $30 for the Mega Man X Collection.

Reasons are twofold:
-Last year I bought a fixer-upper townhouse, and right about now I'm getting some of the more expensive fixes done (carpet, countertop). So there aren't as many dollars available.

-My gaming backlog is actually fairly large. I own a lot of games that I haven't yet played - some that I haven't even installed / opened. I really have no need of new games, and I am really ONLY buying games that I believe are really high-quality and will become somewhat rare later on (i.e. - I bought Phoenix Wright and Under the Knife earlier this fall).

I really have no need for new games right now, and quite honestly I think that the majority of the games they're producing right now are either crap or uninteresting to me.

I'd also like to point out that awesome mods like Ultima V: Lazarus (for the original Dungeon Siege) also add to my gaming backlog, meaning that I have even less desire to go out and buy new games. You really can't even buy an RPG of tha caliber any more - Oblivion is the only one that may even come close to the content technology that was available 10 years ago.

I certainly purchased less over the winter. Less expendable cash coupled with the holiday season resulted in less games purchased.

Even if I did buy things, it was usually when they were on the cheap or budget titles, or if I had a gift card or something of that nature.

Can't really say. I certainly purchased everything I could :D

Mostly classic stuff, wouldn't impact your game stocks.

I certainly purchased less around Christmas (just Guitar Hero) but once January rolled around I took a huge hit with the Gamestop and Gamefly sales. I spent way too much, but I did all of the purchasing I really plan on doing until summer.

I tend to buy in bursts... build up a backlog, take six months burning through that, and then start buying/trading again.

I've bought MUCH MORE games in the past yea than usual. Thanx to cheapass websites, and good deals mostly.

The main reason, is there are just so many good RPG's on the PS2. I doubt any other system has ever had so many in the U.S. by far.

I have to say that I bought a lot more than I usually do as well. Only because EB was selling off all classic stock for 50% off. I bought up plenty of NES and Dreamcast games figuring it's "now or never" for a lot of the prices for those games.

I ended up buying a ton of stuff this winter. A lot of it wasn't really necessary...

The only thing that changed for me was where I bought my games. I ended up buying games less from large stores, and more from mom and pop stores. As far as spending went, I spent about the same as I always do when I have money.

Pretty much all of 05 was way down for me buying games. I focused more on my dvd collection. In winter, I bought almost nothing until just a few days ago when wal-mart marked some super hero games down and I picked those up. Like a lot of people here, I have a back log of plenty of unplayed games to wade through

Yes, my game buying has taken a hit this past year. Unless a game was $10.00 or less I pretty much left it where I found it.
With a baby on its my for my wife and I, and with the looming purchase of a 360, I have been saving my pennies.

Money wise, my totals were probably on par with my usual monthly game spendings ($300 or so a month).

In terms of total amount of stock, here's what I've bought since December:

Xbox 360 Core
Project Gotham 3
3x 360 Wireless Controllers
Perfect Dark Zero
NBA Live 06
Madden 06
Halo 2
Xbox 360 HD Cables
Xbox 360 Hard Drive
Parappa the Rappa 2
S2: Silent Storm
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Amplitude
Frequency
Xbox Live Starter Kit
Xbox Live Network Adapter
Mario Party 4

That was split about half at retail, half on eBay/forums.

I'd say that's a lot more than I usually get, but a lot of those games were $15 - $17. I sunk about $1,000 into my Xbox 360 though. I bought *a lot* more games this year than I had ever before, due in large part to a greater disposable income. I ended up with tons of games (10 or so at one point, all of which cost me $20 or more) that were brand new, factory sealed and sitting on my shelf. :/

I've picked up much more in the last few months than I have before, mostly due to xmas money and finding games I've wanted to play cheap... I've probably bought close to 15 games recently, more than I've bought in the last two years ;)

Gonna be dry for a while, save a few titles... saving for a 360 :P

Not nearly as many for me. I've bought I think two games this year compared to at least 6 - 7 last year at this time. I made a New Years Resolution to NOT buy as many games this year... so far i've succeded I guess. :D :D

You should have added a purchased more, this past winter I have probably tripled the amount of purchases, mostly due to getting a DS. I have also purchased some PS2, Genesis, GBA games too. A good time for gaming I think.

I bought a lot more, but thats more because I got a new job and make a lot more money now than I used to. I've pretty much destroyed my want lists too except for some of the really tough to find (read: expensive) games or ones that I know will continue to drop in price.

Hell, yeah. My financial situation is a lot tighter than it used to be -- I no longer have much in terms of disposable income, so gaming purchases have come to a near halt.

In fact, I'm cutting down on my gaming possessions as well (not stopping being a gamer, but getting back some cash while making some space in my apartment by getting rid of games and systems that I don't play much if ever).
