For some reason, probably because I love the Dreamcast so much, I'm really interested in the Naomi. The thing is, I'm having a hard time justifying purchasing one. What exactly sets the Naomi apart from any one of the Dreamcast ports of the same games? Is it really something worth owning?

Oddly enough, I've been struggling with this same issue over the past couple of weeks. I really want a Naomi setup. It makes sense - I collect arcade platforms with removable media and play them more often than console games. I've put the Naomi off in the past, though, because I already have a Dreamcast and they're basically the same deal. Add to that, the Naomi is still relatively expensive given its age, and you've got a tough sell.

Still, I'm probably going to do it. I'd rather play games sitting at a candy cabinet than in front of the TV. I like to collect the media. There are *some* exclusives - more if you don't want to be bothered with importing DC games from Japan. I'll end up biting the bullet. If I didn't collect arcade stuff specifically and/or wasn't going to be playing Naomi games in a cabinet, then I'd probably just stick with the Dreamcast.

Despite what some Naomi supporters might say, I don't think there's enough evidence to make the Naomi much superior to the Dreamcast beyond personal preference. If you want a Naomi, then get a Naomi. If you want a Naomi specifically for a vastly different experience from the Dreamcast, then you're probably not going to find it.

If you don't want to spend the money for the Naomi but still want to get that arcade experience and taking into account the DC is pretty much a Naomi, why don't you get a JAMMA Converter so you can play the DC on an arcade cabinet. They sell them at Cosmicco Amusement. It comes out to about $85 shipped.

Here you go:

Oh, and ahh here's the home page:

Looks like their site needs some work!!

Ive got a Naomi GD System and it kicks the crap out of the regular DC versions especially in Hi-Res. All the texturs are much sharper and the audio on the GD rom games is marginally better.

Guilty Gear X2 is sheer perfection when played on the naomi in hi res.

But its hard to justify spending around $500USD on the GD system when regular dc's go so cheap. Not only that, but i have found the Naomi hardware to be really tempremental.

Yup. I bought a Naomi setup about a month ago and found the hardware to be more of a pain than it was worth. I've already resold most of it and can't say I'm sad about it.

agreed. unless you've got a naomi dedicated machine, it's not worth the messing in a jamma cab with all the extra power supplies, audio amps and i/o boards.

We picked up a Naomi GD cab back in December. No problems with the system itself, except for the, uhh, cap that decided to suicide itself and make the monitor stop working. X_x (Thanks stonic... again)

That's pretty much what I'm seeing even among the serious Naomi fans. Ahh well, maybe someday.
