I have been wanting to get a TurboDuo for awhile now, since I never was able to afford one when they were initially released. I have heard over time that the turbo duo can die or malfunction due to a power source issue, and was told at some point i'd be better off with an R or an RX.
My concern is, that I really don't know what the pros and cons of either one is, other than that an R seems cheaper. What would be the best bet for me since I will probably be using it regularly?

If you want the full playing experience of games such as Forgotten Worlds, Street Fighter II', or Hudson Soft's SNK Neo Geo fighting ports, RX is the way to go since it comes with a 6 button controller. But you'll be just as satisfied with a R.

Ok, thanks for the info. So technically there is no difference in the two as far as reliability i'm guessing?

Not really. A R/RX is more reliable than a black Duo.
when i had a black Turbo Duo, I was a victim of the widespread "sound issue". It came from the heat of the power source in which the A/V jack was located right next to it.
In the R/RX, the AV jack was relocated away from it.

I was under the impression that an RX is a bit more reliable than an R, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part because I have an RX.
The RX 6-button controller kind of sucks, if you ask me. If you REALLY want to play some fighters, you'd be better off using an Avenue Pad 6. However, if you're used to using gimpy controllers for fighters, maybe you'll fair better with it. My brother-in-law has adjusted to playing fighters with the horrible Dreamcast d-pad for years, so he could play pretty well with the RX 6-button pad as well.
Oh, and the controller cord lengths are pathetically short... It would be wise to invest in an extension. For myself, I use my multi-tap as a small extension until I finally get around to buying a real one.

not to be an anal or anything but Duo-R and Duo-RX were only released in Japan as PC Engien Duo-R/RX... and won't run US hucards though not sure on CD based games - heard PC Engine Duo series weren't region free like Turbo Duo...

R/RX's are region free. :)

Short controller cords are common among any Japanese system. The interior of the average house in Japan is relatively small, so space is a factor.

i dunno when I was looking about for PC Engine Duo series one needed to perform country mod in order to bypass region lockout...??? At the end I just sent my unit to d-lite to get it done plus s-video at the same time

The region mod is for Hucards. That's a smart move you just did. The number 1 reason why y DuoR's modded is so that I can still play Ninja Spirit and Sidearms.

Correction: With SuperCD-ROM attachment you only need ArcadeCard Duo, not the more expensive ArcadeCard Pro... :D

I have a Duo R and it's lasted me well for 4yrs. No problems with it whatsoever.
All I can suggest is to get the system modded for RGB Scart. Absolutely amazing picture quality.

I'd rethink that suggestion on a, SCD2 it is great but heck i was "lucky" to even get one.
He might be better off getting a, DuoR or RX those are easyer to come by these days then... the SCDR2 ;)

Yeah get the whole package, Duo R/RX.
Getting a separate Super CD ROM 2 attachment is like getting Game Boy Color when you could get Advance and get the best of all 3 worlds (B&W, Color and Advance games).
Oh btw if anyone has a broken basic white PC Engine system, I'd like to have one just to decorate my room. 8-)

I would suggest getting a super grafx instead. It's compatible with much more games and looks so much more attractive. It's pretty damn more expensive though.
