I was hoping to get into a good RPG on the Genesis, never played one for the console. Any "cutesy" type RPGs? Phantasy Star looks really high tech and complicated to me, if that makes any sense, but if it's top of the line then I guess I have no choice but to play it.
I'm really into the Pokemon series and Mario RPG games though, so if that gives you any indication.

Agreed on Landstalker. Cute Zelda-esque game. Just be prepared for frustrating jumping deaths.

As far as cute's concerned the only RPGs I can suggest for Genesis would be either of the Shining Force games or definately Crusader of Centy, which is an action RPG about a little boy who can speak with animals.

Everyone seems to like Shining Force and Crusader of Centy. If you get the CD attachment, there is Lunar and Lunar 2, Shining Force CD, Vay, Popful Mail, may be seem others but these seem to be the most popular among the kids.

Beyond Oasis is pretty rpg-lite (it plays like an action/adventure game along the lines of Legend of Zelda, but there's an experience point system at work behind the scenes) but quite a bit of fun. I just recently finished it and had a blast.
Shining Force I and II would appeal to your "gotta-catch-em-all!" pokemon fetish with tons of characters to find and recruit for your party. The first game hasn't aged very well (clunky and overly simplistic interface, battles are too straightforward and easy, etc), but the second game still remains a true classic.

phantasy star iv is very easy, not complicated at all, and imho on the cute side

If you arent really wanting to try Phantasy Star, and you want something simple, fun, addictive, and I guess it is pretty 'cutsie' if you think about it, PLAY SHINING FORCE!!! I LOVE Shining Force man! It plays a lot like Final Fantasy Tatics and the like with the turn-based-stratagy style fights. VERY Fun, and VERY Addictive. When I started 2, first one I had and was able to play without PC emulation, I played almost non-stop for 2 or 3 days, and then I had to start taking time to do other stuff and com ack to that game every night. If you only play a couple hours a day, maybe not that long, this game will give you good play time out of it, and you may want to play it again just because how fun it is, I did.

Can recommend Beyond Oasis, the SHining Force series and the PS games. If you have Sega CD, definitly the Lunar titles.

Actually I think the first game's the better of the two. While I like Shining Force II, I find the characters to be much more bland then the original. And the story too trite, rescue the princess and save the world. Shining Force may not be as colorful as the sequal, but I honestly think it still manages to be a much better game. The battles are just as easy in the sequal. It's not like any of the Force titles are all that difficult.

Beyond Oasis is the only rpg on the Genesis I really like, its more an action adventure though

I'll throw in a chip for Shining Force (especially 2) and Landstalker (the jumps are incredibly difficult, but IIRC there aren't really any places you can die from missing a jump. You don't take damage from falling)
Shining in the Darkness is also really good, if quite challenging. First person dungeon crawler with the same "cutesy" style of the Shining Force games.

Yea, the only reason I count it an RPG instead of just an action/advenutre is because of the experience point system, though it's hidden from the user.

I've been meaning to play this one for a while, but I'm not really looking forward to having to whip out the graph paper :(

There's a spell that reveals the map of the area you are in briefly (one view per cast) and an item that does the same thing, but both item slots (8 per person, 3 people, including weapons and armor) and magic points are at a premium in this game and you don't even get the spell for a little while.

You guys should have told me Shining Force was a strategy RPG. I couldn't get into Advance Wars/Final Fantasy Tactics/Fire Emblem and this type of gameplay is very similar. Ergh, oh well, I guess I can try and keep going but more then likely I won't enjoy it and give up.

Shining Force is a very laid back sort of Tactical RPG. Honestly I can't stand the three games you just compared it to but I love Shining Force. I can't imagine you "giving up" as the game's never very difficult and the gameplay's broken up into neat little slices by providing you with a new town to explore after every battle. So it doesn't degenerate into the mind numbing battle after battle after battle slump that you normally encouter with most "strategy" titles.

Yeah, each battle is significant and UNIQUE. Honestly there is NO strategy in FFT or FFTA, it's just a matter of having the strongest characters. In SF, you have anywhere up to 12 (I think) characters, so your "battle plan" of how you arrange and deploy your characters is just as important, if not more so, than how strong your characters are.
The Story of Thor (Beyond Oasis) is very good

You can have 12 characters in your force at one time but you recruit something like 30 different characters throughout the game.

I played and loved the first Shining Force. Gotta hit the second up sometime. I just hope it's a little more difficult than the first. (I'm a tactics nut.)
Landstalker is like sega's Zelda game. It's pretty fun.
I'm a big Shadow Run fan, but I think it plays a bit better on the SNES.

Hear hear!
The SNES one looked really neat and when I first played it I thought it was kinda cool, but in hindsight it's like the offspring of Ultima 8 and a sierra adventure game rolled into a neat looking cyberpunk adventure/rpg.
When the genesis version came out, magazines raped it and shit on pretty much every aspect of it except for the cyberspace sequences. Thank god a friend of mine lent me his Genesis and Shadowrun, or else I may have never given it a chance... I spent so damn much time just fucking off in the game, hacking corporations for extra change and running missions for whatever local Johnson was around.
Every now and then I'll fire it up and play it again, but I haven't beaten it since way back when. I always get sidetracked by hacking systems and fucking around. It's just too damn fun :(

As much as I love Shadowrun, the topic creator was looking for "cute" games, which Shadowrun is anything but. However if you're just looking for a great Genesis RPG. Shadowrun is the best there is.

It doesn't have to be cute, per se, it's just its hard for me to get into an RPG full of cyborgs and guns. I like RPGs with creativity, and not filled with "dooms day" where everyone is a pessimistic bitch. If Shadowrun is worth it, then hell I'll play it.

So basically what RPGs were all like before FF7 came along ;P

Landstalker, Shining Force I & II and Beyond Oasis are all completely amazing games.
I am going add - wait for it - Sword of Vermillion to that list of RPGs that should be enjoyed on the Genesis. You may also want to consider Y's III.
For the Genesis I really enjoyed Shining Force, Sword of Vermillion and the Phantasy Star series.
You can't go wrong with these games.
