February 12, 2006. Saturday, 2 PM. I had just gone outside to put an outgoing letter in my mailbox. (I like to see the mailman actually take it, and make sure no skate-by punks try any shit -- yes I'm paranoid like that lol) Anyway, I'm on the PC and I hear the familiar rumble of the mail truck. Gotta love that sound... especially when you know some goods are pending. I hear my mailbox snap open, the red thingie put down and the mailbox shut again. I go to the window to look out...
WTF?!?! No mail lady in sight? I scanned to the left, scanned to the right. Where ya at lady? :P
DING DONG!
At 2:10, I received a flat rate box (BTW, I love flat rate boxes, they're such a blessing... could be 20 pounds but will always cost ya $8.10!) I knew this was it. THIS WAS IT. It had to be that Genesis package...
Opening it... reveals...

AH HA! Like the sound effect that you hear from Zelda first picks up the sword in the Nintendo game, I heard that, lol. Look at how well packaged it is. Great seller! That SNES game on top is Bubsy II -- lol the cat's trying to get outta the bag... :P

*cue WAR's "WHY CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS"*
lol, together at long last... two lifelong rivals in the 90s... now, soulbrothers in the 21st Century :D
Time to a'get playin'! First choice was indeed Rocket Knight Adventures. Quick side story... some people will say the sticker labels on RKA there ruins "it" for them. For me I really couldn't care less! It's all about the game itself. And the cool thing is -- that sticker.... is ACTUALLY the sticker of an old defunct mom n pop-ish video rental store I used to go to ALL the time back in my childhood! So that RKA copy I have there... I actually MIGHT HAVE rented it back in '93! Now that's a trip! 8-)
ROCKET KNIGHT ADVENTURES
The sound effect he makes as you turn on the game... annoyed me. LOL 1st level was real basic as was the 1st boss. After you defeat him he goes into a 2nd form which takes place in a raging current.
I got a kick outta fighting the next boss... it was a big swimming sea monster, and you're actually swimming as well. It was fun to time whenever he leaped outta the air to zap his ugly mug! Very satisfying.
The 2nd stage sees you going underwater avoiding booby traps... with strategically placed rope-like platforms for our friend to grab a hold of with his tail, to time the next descend...
I really liked the 2nd level sub boss I think it was -- the giant mechanical pincher creature! That was a cool boss fight. When he first sent down the roving spider enemies, I tried to kill them but insult to injury found out you couldn't destroy them. You had to wait for the flashing red 'mastermind' to destroy that and be rid of all the spider mines.
Patience, young grasshopper! LOL.
The water fight with the giant worm creature was really sick. I liked how he had a weakpoint (his tail) and I thought the "in and out" aspect of the water was pretty damn innovative! Unqiue boss fight to say the least.
Next came the rolling cart area. Man, that boss owned me. Took me a couple tries to beat his 1st form, then another couple tries to beat his 2nd form. GOD DAMN A THIRD FORM!?! Konami you silly bastards you. I was owned by the 3rd boss form in the mining zone.
Man it felt good to be playing Genesis again. I hadn't held a controller in my hands for ... maybe ten years!
Up next was Grind Stormer (RKA I will get back to you...)
This game kicks ass. Just a good ole fashioned shmup that reminds me of Truxton (which I gotta get). Pretty fuckin' hardcore stuff. Uses the ole "die and we'll start you at a previous point with no powerups" system -- ouch! Lots of crazy bold thick red bullets.
Got past the 1st level, but the 2nd level owned me. Played it for about 25 minutes. It felt good to just be playing a Genesis shooter again, ahhh...
Final game of the night saw Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition
AHHHH!! I was not prepared for the small characters (after playing Capcom Generation 5 on Saturn for so many years) lol. These guys are puny. But nevermind that, the gameplay was golden and that's all that matters. What a great translation. The only bad points I can think of are:
1. Ryu's stage suffers considerably. The lack of the moon scaling in the background with the clouds -- that MADE HIS STAGE. I forget if the SNES version has it or not, but the Genesis version the moon and clouds are static, which turns a great classic stage into a dull one. Too bad..
2. Bison's stage... good Lord, what a mess. It's like they got to it and said "ah fuck it let's just get this game out the door." It looks like an unfinished project! I dunno what's worse -- the glaring blue background or the bell which looks poorly superimposed into the background -- ever saw an old Godzilla movie where the humans are running from the monsters and the humans look cheesily matted (sp)? It reminded me of that.
Despite those complaints, I enjoyed it very much. Went through level four on hyper three with Ryu. Fuckin' Sagat. AHhh how I remember his neverending "TIGER! TIGER!" 16-bit act. And the fucker does nothing but throw tiger uppercuts if you mistime a jump at him. He's so annoying to fight LOL (BTW, can somebody tell Dhalsim's elephants to STFU!? Good God.... LOL )
Great game regardless!
And that was a wrap on my 1st day/night with my new (but old) friend ;)
