I think I am gonna get a DS lite from Japan when they come out. I found info somewhere that the original DS is region free. So correct me if I'm wrong, but any DS from any region can play DS and GBA games from any region. Does anyone know if the DS lite will be the same way? If so, is there any good reason why I should not buy a DS lite from Japan other than possibly paying high shipping costs?

Yeah, every Nintendo handheld system has been region free (even the VB). I don't see why it would change now. :)

In fact, I believe every handheld system ever made has been region free.

Is anyone else gonna order a DS Lite from Japan?

Sort of. Depends on whether or not you count the movie and music region locking on the PSP, and other quasi-handhelds like the Nomad, Turbo Express, etc.

But yeah, any DS game will work on any DS, and there's no indication to think this won't be the case with the Lite.

I'd like to order from Japan, but I would wait for the US release, more colors possibly even though the navy one looks cool. If you don't have a DS yet:
For wifi setups, be prepared for a headache (aka compatability for the router issues) however once it's set up, it's a blast to play others online. Except for those who turn off the game when they lose badly! That part stinks.

There's no reason to.

Higher quality screen, adjustable brightness levels, smaller design, more compact.

It's harder when you go from Japan, to say, NZ or Aust. You need a voltage converter then. For the US it's less of an issue.

Probably. They haven't announced a US release date yet, and unless they announce the date and it is soon after the JAP release, I will import one. I have been waiting to get a DS for these changes to be made, so I am excited about getting one and would rather not wait.
