View Full Version : Is your backlog composed of old or new titles?

Man, I'm trying to master about 10-20 old arcade and 16-bit titiles simultaneously.

On the modern side, though, I have relatively few games to play, mostly Xbox games I haven't seen fit to complete yet (Namco's Breakdown, the final boss of Metroid Prime which I haven't touched for a few years, things of that nature).

Of course there are tons of new games I haven't bought - simply don't have the money - but if I did have the money my backlog of older games would keep increasing faster than my current gen backlog.

That make any sense? What games are you currently trying to play though?

A little of both. Mostly newer gen titles, though. I have Metroid Prime 1 and 2 that I just got for Christmas this year as well as Sonic Mega Collection Plus, and I haven't really had time to play through all three of them much since I bought them. Also, just this weekend I bought Rygar for the ps2 finally. While it is an awesome game from what I have played, I just don't have much time to fully play it as much as I would like to.

There are plenty of others as well, but those are the main ones that I am behind on.

I'm all over the board, too. While I've got a healthy list of Xbox (Otogi, Psychonauts, Demon Stone), GC (Cubivore, Metroid Prime I and II), PS2 (Dark Cloud 2, Bujingai, Digital Devil Saga I and II, many many more), and DS (Phoenix Wright) games to beat, I've also got a laundry list of old 16 and 32 bit titles in the queue.

Some of the older stuff in the queue right now:

Legend of Oasis (Saturn)
Discworld, Discworld II, Discworld Noir (Playstation)
Just Breed (NES)
Rudora no Hihou (SNES)
Shining the Darkness (Genesis)

..and the list goes on. Plus I suspect if I don't play through Ratchet & Clank sometime soon, my friend is going to pummel the hell out of me. Decisions decisions!

But I've been trying to mix it up recently and keep it interesting, never really playing through more than one or two games on a platform in a row.

Funny you should mention the final boss of Metroid Prime. I put aside MP2 when I reached that final boss - it's just such a pain to go around and find (or re-find) all the power-ups you can't get to the first time through a location.

I have both new and old (and "semi-old") on my backlog. Zelda: Wind Waker, a few Pokemon games, the original Syndicate, Neverwinter Nights, never finished any of the Heroes of Might & Magic games (but got close), Morrowind, actually never finished X-Com UFO Defense (but again, got really close), been meaning to get an Apple ][ hooked up to my PC so that I can finish Bard's Tale II and III, Fallout 2, Viewtiful Joe, Sigma Star Saga, haven't even touched Final Fantasy IX and X (and I frankly don't care to finish VIII)...

Lots of games - lots.

the original Syndicate

That game was so excellent, it's a crime that the series hasn't been revisited in so long. Assassinating the politican during the parade, killing the wife while she was shopping, taking over the Atlantic Acellerator...god...such great memories.

It gets a little too easy if you just persuadatron the hell out of everyone in the level, but damn if it ain't fun to brainwash a ton of enemy agents and then have them get plowed down by traffic, or just run around with flame throwers and cause mass panic.

A few months ago I decided to try to play the Genesis version, and despite the graphics being worse and the control being beyond horrible, i still had a lot of fun playing it. Such a classic :(

Only modern titles for me. I can't keep up with current gen, I have NO time to go back and replay older games. I have my mame cab for quick bursts of retro lovin, but playing a full game of zelda LTTP or anything is out of my range at the moment with at least over 1,000 hours of backlog games (damn SRPGS!)

I'm pretty much with Sylentwulf here. My PS2 collection breached 90 titles this weekend... I've completed 19 of them. 71 nearly untouched PS2 games alone, not to mention I've only had an Xbox for a year and a half and I just broke 50 titles last week... I've completed 12. Gamecube isn't so bad.

PS2: 90 owned, 19 completed.
Xbox: 51 owned, 12 completed.
Gamecube: 34 owned, 13 completed.
DS: 13 owned, 4 completed.
X360: 5 owned, 4 completed.
GBA: 48 owned, 11 completed (lots of "unbeatable" games though)

So current gen, I own 241 games and have only completed 62. Almost 200 current gen games to go through... wow. Across every other system ever I only have 180 games, and most of them are from my childhood. There definitely are some games I want to go through on SNES for sure, Super mario RPG, Lufias, Breath of Fires, but I did most of the others when i was a kid.

Work sucks. I need to stay here and play DQ8 so I can finish it, then play through condemned, and work on my DS library before Oblivion comes out.

Just older games. Anything from this gen (even Dreamcast) I usually play right away. ATM I have a good number of PSX and 3DO games I've yet to try out, and a few Genesis games. Anything older than that goes directly to the shelves until a rainy day (or longer).

Hmm. I picked up Zelda: WW again recently, my quest was for the Fortress, second time through I think. Ugh. Got disinterested fast - I really dislike that level design.

Sigma Star Saga I haven't touched since a few days after I got it, actually.

Morrowind I started playing on the PC a bit, but lost interest. Beat the main quest on the xbox, thoroughly broke the game with super powerful items and artifically pumped up stats (when I ran out of room to improve).

Wish I had Viewtiful Joe, any of them. I don't believe I have any of the other games on that list.

For my part, I'm thinking about finishing up Bio Menace (freeware now), replaying Heretic/Hexen (looks as good as ever), maybe suffer through more of Hexen II, set up a machine to play Heretic II, try out Corridor 7 (found a boxed CD-ROM version recently), and set up my truly awful Mac Performa 6290cd to try out some Mac shooters on, including the super-rare System Shock CD I snagged a week back. Also need to find out how to get Terminator: Rampage (by Bethesda) to install properly to PC. Definitely a bit FPS-centric here :)

A good mix of both. I have one game going per system and then move onto a new game on that system, but not before playing one on another system. I imagine it would take me a year to complete my backlog at this point.

I have too much backlog from everywhere. I've been slowly playing my games 1 by 1, a few hours at a time. The main focus recently has been on Tales of Desting (PS1), Turok: Evolution (GC), Lion Heart (PC), Bust-A-Move 2 (PC/Saturn, and only to beat it over and over on hard just to feel better about not finishing my other games), Paper Mario (N64), Final Fantasy Chystal Chronicals (GC)... Shoot, I can go on forever but what it comes down to is I need to just stick to 1 game and over-kill it until I win in some way, shape, or form.

Now, I have a friend that has a backlog of over 100 games and his solution to playing them is download the walkthroughs and beat them as fast as possible. I don't believe in this method because it can really destroy the true gameplay and interactivity you should get by doing it all yourself. I only feel you should use a walkthrough as a last resort, like "why in hell have I been in this 1 place for over an hour now?!". Oh well. Good luck to everyone beating games faster than they can buy! :)

I recently sold all my unfinished/old games, so my backlog shrunk dramatically. I only have about 12 titles that I haven't finished, which are:

Tales of Symphonia (GC)
Zelda Windwaker (GC)
Star Fox Assault (GC)
Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
Ape Escape 2 (PS2)
Parappa the Rapper 2 (PS2)
Frequency (PS2)
Amplitude (PS2)
Silent Storm (PC; currently playing)
Mario Party 4 (GC)
Project Gotham 3 (X360)
Perfect Dark Zero (X360)

Also would like to play through [again] Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Invisible War.

The first 8 of those games are still sealed; now that I finally got a GC memory card, I'll probably crack open a few of them.

No "old" games in the backlog (well, none older than 2002 ish, I suppose), as I don't own any "retro" systems. Oldest thing is a Dreamcast, but I rarely play long winded single player affairs on that.

I have plenty of old and new games that need to be either completed or played. I've let my backlog get way out of hand.

I'm mostly modern, if I buy an older game I will play it but I have beat a majority of my old games so I focus mostly on the newer stuff that I haven't beat.

I do play Dreamcast alot though :D

A mix. I'm really bad about not finishing games. Here's some games that I'm embarrassed not to have beaten. Meaning that they are great games, games that i enjoy playing but just have yet to beat (that I own).

GC - Prince of Persia
DUO - Castlevania Rondo (wtf...I've had this game for like 6 months and I haven't beaten it yet)
NES - Castlevania III, River City Ransom
SNES - Zelda (on last dungeon)
Megaman X (near the end)
Zombies at my Neighbors
Genesis - any sonic game
PS2 - Gradius V (lost interest once I unlocked unlimited continues)

...and many shmups for various systems, though I play shmups not necessarily to beat them.

I've got 100+ games in my backlog, it's getting quite sad. I managed to finish half of the games in my pseudo collection recently, so I guess I'm not doing too badly.

The thing is, I have so many RPGs, I don't think I'm ever going to get through them all! I also have the attention span of a butterfly nowadays, which, as you can imagine, doesn't help matters.

Older games (NES, N64, PSX, DC, Genny) by a large margin. All that I have for newer are DS and Xbox360 games.

I was doing pretty well trying to keep up, i only had a few hundred in my backlog. Then i bought Guitar Hero and Radiant Silvergun both late last year. I haven't beaten squat since then. Any time i get bored with one, i switch to the other. Doesn't help that i just bought 15 N-Gage games yesterday... none of which i plan on beating...

Whew, a little of each, I guess. I put priority on playing new game purchases, though, since I hate spending $50 on a game, letting it sit for a while, and then by the time I get around to it having it available in stores for $20 or so. I feel like I wasted $30.

Next on my "to-play" list because of this criteria: Indigo Prophecy. Gotta beat it before the price drop!

Quite a few classic and modern titles for me, depending on when I hook up the other system besides my PS2.

Hmm. Nomad's giving a number of Genesis action games more playtime than I'd normally give them.

It's painful to play Atomic Runner on this blurry screen...but still fun. :P
