Has there ever been a piece of software developed that can scan an entire CD and tell you how damaged it is? It would be a good way to test a game and see if it actually works so I can return used games on time. Especially those long RPGs that would take forever to learn whether or not it's damaged.

You could always try ripping an image of the disc.

Never tried any CD copying software except for MP3 rippers(They'll actually tell you how messed up a song actually is from the errors).
What would be neat is a program that could understand what each game is and determine based on what files are messed up if the game will actually work. Like in an RPG if they have a long video and that video file gets messed up you can't continue the game.

You could use ISOBUSTER on any cd based game that uses the standard CRC (Cyclical Redundancy Check). CD's use this to be able to read from damaged sectors, some videogames use this method as well. This would work for sega CD for sure. PS1 and PS2, you would have to rip the disc as a 1:1 copy and run the CRC check against the copy. I would think you could do this with gamecube games as well, but again, you would have to copy them using the PSO exploit. I can't talk about xbox security, but if you read the above instructions, you should be able to figure that out as well...

The above posts hold some good information. Another thing to try is reading in a copy of the disc on a PC, using a 1x read speed, and turning off "error correction". If there's anything at all wrong with the disc, it'll report that to you. I believe Alcohol 120% can do this.

Yup. I'm pretty sure you don't even need to use a 1x read speed.

The problem that you're going to run into using most tools on a game disc is the copy protection. Later PS1 titles and all PS2 titles are intentionally stamped with bad CRC checksums. It's part of the protection scheme, it makes it dificult for some disc copy programs to skip the errors. Xbox discs aren't readable in a pc under normal conditions, so they're out too.
