GG vs GBA

Boy does my GG screen ever look dim after playing my new GBA! I wish somebody would make an adapter that would let me play all my GG games on my GBA, that would rule.

I never noticed how crappy the screen on the GG is until I got my new GBA. Makes me wonder how dim the screen on the original GBA was, since I have one of the new brighter screen models. You just gotta love the super bright screen!

GG as in Game Gear right? That bloody thing costed me alot of money to buy AA batteries back when I was a kid and wanted to play Sonic Chaos. I also hated the directional pads. They were a pain when playing fighting games on it. But, I did really like the fact you could play the games in the dark.

If I have to choose between the GBA, and the GG. Of course it will be the GBA. But GG did had some good games of it's own.

I agree. How can you even do GG vs. GBA? What were you thinking, just because they are color displays on a handheld? Oh well. I really liked the GG in mid 90's when I played it the most. Now I just play my Gameboy poket color because it's smaller and I have games on it I haven't beaten. When the GG first came out I wanted it so bad just because it was color and had the Sega logo on it. :)

GG loses to Game Boy Pocket, in terms of sharpness, but that's not really fair given that the GBP came out in '96, and is what the original should've been.

Now here's an interesting one: GG versus Nomad.

I had better memories of the Nomad compared to the GG, but holy cow - I just dug out my Nomad for a few rounds of Shadow Dancer, holy cow is that screen tiny! At least it seems that way, as the resolution is higher. Even without the magnifier, the Game Gear is easier to see despite being blurrier when everything's stationary. The Nomad does blur up pretty well when you move around, though.

Still will take the Nomad along for trips, though - Shadow Dancer and the other Shinobi games are more fun than GG Shinobi 2 (at least until I clear that damn enemy fortress, that is). I just haven't found enough GG games that I like, and of them two are currently out of my budget (GG Aleste 1 & 2). Sylvan Tale would be great if I could only read Japanese.

I gotta chime in with some love for the Game Gear's screen. I hadn't seen it in yonks, but when I did finally see it again last year, I was SERIOUSLY impressed. Pretty good for its day :)

I *hated* the GameGear screen. I kept having to tilt it in order to see anything whatsoever on it. That plus the batteries meant I sold it PDQ.

(And got one for free years later when my dad decided he didn't want his anymore, which I still have).

If you want to play GG games on a GBA it's possible, but not if you're talking about the carts themselves of course. I'm talking about roms and and emulator on a flash card or it' like. Not quite as cool but an option nonetheless.

Would be cool if they made a converter that let you play your GG games on your Nomad too. The Nomad screen is definitely better than the GG screen. And I have the same complaint as Nature Boy, I have to hold the screen at what seems like an unnatural angle to be able to see anything.

Even better would be if they had made a converter that let you play your GG games on your TV. There was a thread a while back about a group that had discovered how to do it, I wonder if they ever started selling the units? Having the games on a big screen would kinda ruin the experience for me a bit, but at least I could see what I was doing better.

I've heard that there are ways to play SMS games on your GG. Unfortunately I don't think the opposite is true.

I love the Game Gear! One thing that really sticks out for me is laying in bed, with the lights off, and thinking how cool the backlit screen was!

there's a master converter similar to the genesis one made for the gamegear, it's actually pretty cheap to get, but i can't say i've had the pleasure yet. as far as playing gg on a sms, the only thing holding it back is that the gamegear has a bigger colour palette than the sms, other than that the hardware is identical

Well, the LCD screen wouldn't likely be able to scale up GG games very well, and if you went pixel-for-pixel there would probably be a good deal of black border. Kinda lose-lose situation, no?

I picked up one of em a few weeks ago, and it works very well. you can find a few sellers on ebay selling them for under 10$

I got on a sms kick a few weeks ago and decided it'd be neat to be able to play them on the go..

I picked up a large pile of games I always wanted to try like psycho fox shinobi and a few others..


its a shame they all sucked ass...but its a neat little device that breaths a little bit of life into my very dusty gamegear (thank god for ac adaptors)

Yeah, but then compare it to the Turbo Express Portable / PCEngine GT. Heck, compare ANY handheld up until the GBA-SP to the Turbo Express and the Turbo Express wins hands down - nice ultra sharp active TFT screen when everyone else was still messing around with crappy passive matrix.

Having the games on a big screen would kinda ruin the experience for me a bit, but at least I could see what I was doing better.

I usually play Game Gear games on the TV via the SMS Plus v0.2DDD emulator on the Dreamcast which handles both Sega Master System and Game Gear. It's one of the VERY few times where I actually use the rendering enhancements an emulator can add and it's shocking how clear the games are when they're not blurry and flickering.

I would toss the Lynx into the mix but the only reason I really bought one was because up until very recently it was the only place to get a near perfect version of S.T.U.N. Runner outside of emulation. (oh, and the excellent ports of Paperboy and Hydra as well)

Imo the GG screen is much worse than the GB screen. Damn, some GG games are so fucking blurry its almost impossible to play them.

Hell, I'll vote green & black GB over GG. Sure, the GG had color and light.. but it was so blurry that it was impossible to play anything on it. The SMS adapter was a damn cool idea but squished the screen down so badly on an already seriously crippled screen that it was not worth the time.
