View Full Version : What were some games that really made you angry?

I know there's a saying that video games are great stress relievers. Not really. I played couple of games in the past that really got me in a bad mood. But, I didn't go as far as throwing the controller at the wall, or putting a hole through my tv screen. Anyone played games that did that to you? And sorry if a topic like this was done in the past.
Some of the games I remembered having bad times with.
1.)One of the Mega Man games on the gameboy. When I was young, I always got screwed by that fan blowing machine, or falling down onto the spikes. Then I had to start all over again.
2.)Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Yes, I know it's supposed to hard normally. But, Akuma was pretty damn cheap. Not to mention Shin Akuma in Capcom Vs SNK 2. Must of died 100's of time before finally beating him... But that was all due to luck.
3.)The End in MGS3. I first hated this when I died the first time. Then, I really enjoyed it as I never played anything like this before. And the fact I got the old man when he was asleep. Then I find out later, you could just kill him easily earlier in the game..
4.)Sonic 2-3. Being underwater for so long, and the music and the countdown begins. That really scares you, and when you try to get out of the water, you accidentally mis-step a platform and fall all the way down to the bottom again...
5.)Thunderforce IV. Sometimes, it was hard for me to see if a enemy shot something at me, and I accidently just go straight ahead into the blue bullet. Not to mention they just appear right behind you and just kill you... Also, the 2nd level in AC was pretty hard to see.

After long relentless button pushing, I just gave up on the torture sequence in Metal Gear Solid.

You know, you just made me remembered the water level in MGS2 where you had to swim and come up to breath. I hated that, and had to get a friend to pass that for me...

Oh, I immediately think of some boss fights from Ninja Gaiden, and the cage match in Resident Evil 4 (on professional...my death count MORE THAN DOUBLED as a result of that)
Mad, like actually almost a bit mad, or rather wierded out?
SNK shooter from 1989 called Sky Soldiers. I'm sorry, why the hell do I need to be shooting British planes out of the skies at the end of 1945?
Pretty mediocre game too, very uneven graphics and boss difficulty (some levels have details, but some are just grassy expanses).

Need For Speed: Underground. It wasn't hard to play, I just hated the hip urbanness of it.
I'm stuck on Resident Evil 4 at a bit with wolves. I've only got a few rounds of ammo and fairly low health, so I can't get past them.

i would say Strider Returns for Genesis, the first game was one of my all time favorites, then i rent this pile of poo. Seeing "The Forbidden Forrest" over and over again, as I slowly crawl through a generic forrest in a Sci-Fi themed game made me miss my 4 dollars for the rental.

Was it Ninja Gaiden II that had the level that you had to make a series of jumps across pits, meanwhile, there were a bunch of enemies flying around that would send you back if you hit them, plus it was lightning in the background, turning the screen pitch black except for when the lightning would strike? Yeah, that game. That level. For some reason, it was the bane of my existence for the longest time.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City got on my nerves quite a bit. Mission: Rescue Lance Vance, who's tied up in some junkyard with a bunch of dudes surrounding him, then escape while said dudes chase you down. No problem, right? Wrong. For some reason, mostly me being inept, freaking Lance died every way possible at my hands. He got shot, he got run over, he ran around in circles THEN got run over, I blew him up a few times, I jumped out of my car on the way to rescue him while he was tied in the chair and watched in horror as it careened toward him, killing him before the mission even started. This mission wasn't even that difficult, but for some reason, I just couldn't do it ... until one day, when I picked up the game after having not played it for awhile, and beat it on the first try. Funny how that works.
The newest Madden games. I can't even play them anymore. I used to try to deny/ignore the comeback AI, but it bugs the hell out of me just thinking about it.

Parappa the Rapper, stage 5 (the line for the toilet). Even going for years at a time without playing, I can beat it first time now. But when I first got the game, I must have failed a hundred times. That said, dropping to a bad rating after maintaining a good rating throughout any stage is enough to drive anyone insane.
The irritating "Nightmare" bit at the end of Project Rub. Three recycled bosses in a row, with the kicker that if you die, you have to start from the first of them again. It's design crime.
Sonic Heroes is another design criminal. Even if you've played through the game with the other characters, you're still forced through the incredibly patronising tutorial when playing Team Rose. You have to play that team to finish the game properly (exposing another one of my pet hates - finishing the same levels multiple times for a "true" ending).
Mario Kart DS and the irritation of computer-fired blue shells annoyed me a lot, though not to the extent of some people I know (I've heard of people throwing and biting their systems because of this).

I had that very often, the last time it was with God of War, the level where the spikes came out of the ground after 20 sec or so and where you had to push a block to the other side to jump onto a platform ... DAMN!!!!! I smashed my controller several times around my room, tried it at least 40 times and after that i decided to take my savegame to a friend so he could help me get past that point. I put my memorycard in his ps2, tried it myself another time and i got passed it at once!! Unbelievable, there must be a curse on my ps2 i think :D
Another recent one i can remember, Resident Evil 4, the minigame where you can get the Chicago Typewriter after you kill Krauser ... i gave up on that one, next game!

Well when I was younger playing Megaman series I always got frustrated by jumping wrong or making a mistake and falling onto spikes
it was bad, but in RE4 there are some parts that just drove me crazy until I got them just right but it just is intense.
it's all good though.

The first game that made me angry was Socom US Navy Seals. When I was trying to complete the single player game.
There were a few missions in that game that got my blood boiling.
The second game is Ace Combat 5. Im stuck on a mission I cant pass for the life of me.

I'll second Parappa Stage 5. After playing other rhythm games and going back to Parappa I have come to the conclusion that the scoring system is based on the Earth's alignment with the moon and what you last ate before playing.
Valgas in the first Power Stone will forever remain in my mind as the king of cheap fighting game bosses. Worse than Omega Rugal, worse than Jinpachi Mishima, worse than Gill, all of 'em.
Pokemon Puzzle League on Very Hard. The computer is CONSTANTLY finding combos and chains to drop on you, and as if that wasn't bad enough you get to hear the same 5 voice clips repeated infinitely through the entire 5-minute match until you die. Or by some miracle your opponent dies.
Any form of Reversi. I think I'm doing alright until it's near the end of the game and the computer changes the score to like 843-2.

The most recent game that enraged me was Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones for the PS2. After a long and somewhat tricky chariot sequence, I get to a boss fight against the Axe and Sword Twins, and I simply couldn't beat them. I figured out what I'm supposed to do (attack one and get the other to get his weapon stuck in the ground) but due to the somewhat odd collision detection and an unresponsive block function, I kept on getting killed.
Eventually, I got so pissed off that I threw my controller onto the ground and it bounced once and I heard a snapping noise. When I picked up the controller again, I saw that there was a crack running down one of the sides. I was so mad at this stage that I completely snapped and started to stomp on my controller until it was in pieces. Anyway, I turned off my PS2, cleaned up the mess of controller pieces and I haven't touched the game since then.

Several of games, but the first that I think of is the last boss in Tekken 5. Fuck, I used like 45 min to beat him haha. I suck at fight games tho, but still, it was fucking annoying.
I remember when I played NES games and if I didnt make it I pretended I was a sumo wrestler (dunno why, im not fat) and I pressed the buttons damn hard in rage haha. The NES controllers was really strong, they took alot of beating :) One of them have a big crack in the back.
My sister also got fucking pissed if she didnt get to play the NES and she slammed the controller in my head once lol.

Ninja Gaiden (NES)...
Stupid. Fucking. Bats.
Back in 1988 I practically destroyed my desk/entertainment center by slamming my fist into it each time I died. I'm still not entirely sure how I beat that game.

I can't believe it hasn't been said, maybe it's too obvious but...
Landstalker...
Isometric jumping. You couldn't stop trying beacuse the game was so good, yet all you could do is scream and keep trying...then the stinking boss battle. You think you've one, then the stinking Dragon. Then you die and have to fight through that last stage again...
Another game, not so good, is Tork. You constantly fall off cliffs and such. Automatic death...

I'll second the Super SFII Turbo comment.
Capcom's philosophy of letting AI read inputs, do charge moves with absolutely no delay, and do insanely unfair damage is bad enough, but this game just takes it to absurd extremes.
Medusa heads in every Castlevania game ever need to just die. Sometimes I just can't figure out why I love that series so much when the enemis and gameplay are so braindead, but I do.
One time I kicked my A500 after it locked up on level 80 or so of Gauntlet 2.
A similar episode with MarioWorld crashing and erasing my save when I had 95, er, points or whatever, also comes to mind. All it took was a joystick plug brushing against the cart to kill a whole weekend's worth of progress.

Ghouls 'N Ghosts for the Genesis. The last section where you face all the previous bosses made me furious every time. I've still not beat it.
And it's not classic, but:
Need for Speed: Underground on the DS.
It's actually the only game I've ever regretted buying. I loved the Xbox version, but the DS ruined it.

What really pisses me off about Ninja Gaiden (particularly 1) is when bats, birds and ninjas keep respawning not letting you pass.
Here's my list:
>Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (SMS) -Mr. Big fight. Damn bullets follow me everywhere I went.
>Final Fantasy V (SFC) and Final Fantasy IX (PS1) -It's what Neo Exdeath and Necron have in common. The fucking GRAND CROSS attack. I pushed my TV to the floor out of rage on both bosses.
>Rockman and Forte (SFC) when I was a newb at it. My hardest points at it back then were Dynamo man, and all 3 forms of King.

Part in Mega Man 2 in Wily's Castle where you have to get from one ladder to the next using the floating platforms, arrgh...it always takes forever for me to place them right.
More recently I cannot stand it when I was trying to get all star rankings in Mario Kart DS and the computer would get on the endless supply of blue/red shells and similar tactics that felt a little cheap, especially after running a solid race up to that point.
Also, I totally agree with the Medusa heads, I always cringe when the clock tower approaches in any Castlevania.

I just snapped my dualshock in half after dying like a hundred times at the same part in Doom for PSX.
I swear, this level was designed to make me go crazy.
You have to fight a whole bunch of baddies, then jump across to this hole in the wall, but if you go too far (or not far enough) you fall into acid or lava or whatever this orange shit is supposed to be. To make matters worse, you have to do it twice before you progress.
At first, it wasn't so bad, because you can make quite a few attempts before the environment suit wears off, but after trying so many times and dying and fighting my way to that part again I just couldn't take it.
Being the stubborn prick that I am though, I just wouldn't give up, and finally I almost got past it and some stupid piss ant enemy that I'd overlooked picks me off.
Well, of course, I just lose it, but I don't want to yell or throw down the controller because it's late and I don't want to make too much noise. So I just shut my eyes and squeeze the controller in my hands and snap it in half like a fortune cookie.
I thought dualshock pads were a bit more robust than that, but obviously they're not. Fortunately it was a freebie anyway, and I have plenty of spares, but it really got me worked up. I hope I can sleep okay.
EDIT: and btw, the level is called, appropriately enough 'Perfect Hatred'

You guys reminded me, the worst thing about 2-D side scrolling games are those damn little bats, water drops, spiders, worms, little medusa heads, etc... Whatever small pesky things that hit you when you're making a jumping, and you bounce back down to the pit and die and such.

I remember playing Pokemon Stadium 2 against the tournament players (or whatever it was). One was this guy who switched his Pokemon every damn time you switched. So in the end, I had to lose, because it was impossible to beat him. Anyways, after I lost, this old guy in the game said "You need to switch your Pokemon!". I threw my goddamn soda at the screen when he said that.
I almost broke my controller trying to beat I-No using Dizzy in Arcade Mode in the game Guilty Gear XX. Having no KO attack kinda screws it over for you.
Also those lava balloons in Donkey Kong Country 2. "Oh look! I'm almost at the top of the hill! Okay got it... wait.. okay.. no, um... ugh... no waiiiitt.... nooooARRRRGGGHHHH" Jerkass hill.

A very bizzare Gamecube game I rented awhile back called Amazing Island. I got so pissed at one of the minigames that threw my controller against the wall. There's a dent in the wall now, and that controller no longer works LOL. The final boss cannot be beaten.

Puzzle games... I love puzzle games, but then I also hate them like crazy. Some days I can hop onto one of these and play it right through without losing. Then some days, and I mean just some of these days (like today), I lose in every fricking match! Like in Bust-a-Move 2, I swear they round the angles sometimes because I know that little ball was supposed to go 1 space to the left... I threw my controller around a bunch of times and reset the consule a few as well. The only other games that can piss me off are FPSs or Adventures that I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do. I'll wonder around for 20 minutes or more and end up just turning the thing off and never playing the game again. I usually don't get stuck until a few hours into the game at least though, so ya.

Yeah, puzzle games can be a bitch.
I don't let Puzzle Bobble get to me, since I find the gameplay sloppy and inconsistent to begin with.

Anyone play through HAVEN: CALL TO THE KING?? (PS2) there's this one annoying as **** ship level that is notorious for frustrating a-many gamers. It took me like 20 tries and 2 hours later to get through it... would always come close but lose at the end (you have to be perfect, literally)

I'll list five experiences:
Sonic heroes. It was the final stages (Not battles) In that game when i was playing the Sonic team and Dark team. The laser cannon would blast me off of the rails almost every time, and if that didn't happen, i'd fall off or miss the target.
Zelda: OoT, the level in the volcano. I was stuck in the room with the fire trap for so long it was pathetic.
Rise To Honor for the PS2 - The first boiler room scene. That scene kept me for over an hour, maybe even two. I would kill the first set of guards, but when the second set came (The ones with the big guys in bulletproof vests) They would kick me around like an empty soda pop can. I got SO MAD that i would Twist The PS2 controller! It still works, but i broke off a bit of plastic inside it.
The Hobbit For Xbox. In the Forest scene, When i was going through the forest, these undead freaks would come out of the ground and murder me. And after that, they would still be roaring "REAHHRR!" "RUHARR!" REAHRR!"
And, who can forget those certain parts in GTA San Andreas, like when you try to take over enemy territory but the police take over your $50,000 worth of weapons instead. It is a good thing i saved the game often so i wouldn't REALLY get mad.

Ninja Gaiden (NES) pisses me off eventually, sometimes around Stage 4 but definately around Stage 6. Some (or a lot rather) of Stage 6 is SO frustrating it's strange that I haven't broken a controller because of it.
About midway through the first floor of Stage 6-2, those Rocket Ninjas and their ninja stars on those platforms.
The next floor of 6-2, where there's a long series of platforms filled with Bats, Eagles, and one of those Witches walking around on a tiny platform that you have to jump to. It's not that hard now but I always end up dieing there a few times at least.
The last floor of 6-3 (i think) is a real pain, a whole bunch of those jumping zombie-looking things and more eagles. *shudder* It's the floor right before you reach the boss though.
And finally the fact that you have to restart the entire stage FROM THE BEGINNING if you don't defeat the THREE bosses that you have to fight at the end. If you don't make it to the first boss with at least the majority of your health intact it's not even worth going in there.
Particular enemies that piss me off:
The white spin-kicking guys: the least bothersome of the enemies here but they can be difficult to kill in some areas.
The Witches: they throw (randomly it seems so it's hard to gauge when to jump at them) crosses at you, usually while they are on perched on some out of the way platform. the worst is the one on stage 6-2, where you have to jump across a large hole and there's a witch on the other side throwing crosses at you.
The jumping zombie-looking things: they are quick, persistant, come in groups (usually), and they jump pretty high. these things are almost as bad as eagles.
The eagles (of course): oh god, the eagles. i hate these things with a passion. they are pretty much the same as the above enemy, except that they don't jump, and they tend to appear in the worst possible places.
The rocket ninjas: they usually don't kill me but they are really annoying with their ninja stars and they tend to reappear immediately when you kill one.
thanks for letting me vent (i've been playing ng lately as you can probably tell). :)

Why am I the first to mention BATTLETOADS (NES)?
Wolverine: Adamantium Rage (Genny) really got on my nerves. I don't know why I bothered playing it as long as I did, considering how disappointing I found it. I smashed the game's case upon getting REALLY frustrated with the game's 2nd level.

Well, I could mention most of the games listed above, but I'll add one I haven't heard mentioned yet.
Adventure Island: NES
Great game, but for some reason I can't make it more than 3 levels (without a game genie) without losing all continues. Aggravating as hell for a game most people love and I just can't seem to do it. Kingdom Hearts makes me mad just for the terrible camera. Other than that a great game.

Oh my...When I was little, there were SO many games that got me frustrated...
All the Megamans got me mad because of the stupid timing of jumps that you needed.
Double Dragon...I could never and STILL can't beat this game.
The worst for me was Dragon Warrior 2... I didn't use an FAQ and I was trying to get through the whole game w/o any help at all. All I remember, was that I was on an island, where I had the game saved. I was poisoned, 2 of my characters were dead, I had NOTHING to heal myself with, and town was 3 steps away. Talk about a downer...

-about 70% of the megaman games

-home alone (NES)

Jak II has been causing extreme rage the further I get in to it. Only 30% more to go....
Also, Treasure Master for the NES. I could never get past the first level. Stupid game.

The only game in recent history that really got me mad was NFL Street for the GC. I got my GC in Christmas 04, got NFL street shortly after the new year, then shortly after that I was out one platinum GC controller, one door on my entertainment center, and now the reset button on my GC is "stuck". You can power it up and play fine, but the button is stuck in the down position, so theres no way to reset the game without turning it off... Anger management, I know LOL

1) those stupid blocks from the mega man series that would disappear and reappear and then you had to time the jumps and figure out the pattern.....oh i can't describe the frustration. thank the video game gods Dr Wiley couldn't afford to put more of those in his forts....or for that matter just not have any blocks at all that would put a kink in the blue bombers path
2) the final boss of arc the lad II, he wasn't hard per se but he had sooooo many hp...it took me 2 1/2 hours to beat him. it took me forever because i would get so bored of it i would give up half way through.
3) getting to the end of a mission in a medal of honor game and then dying and haveing to do everything over.....i guess there were no checkpoints in video game ww II
4) anything with a time limit (i enjoy it now and then as it adds a sence of suspense and danger but sometimes its just to much)

Chrono Cross.
I was just discussing this other day with a friend. I loved Chrono Trigger one of my favorite games of all time. So I started playing Chrono Cross and it was interesting enough, but I kept waiting for the connection to Chrono Trigger. I played some more and saw some hints in terms of similar names and locations, but nothing else. So I kept playing and began to tire a little of the game, but kept thinking "It's a sequel to Chrono Trigger, it's got to get good." Finally I run into some characters representing the original trio but their connection is unclear. I wade through more of the rather incomprehensible story to this game, get some more hints about a connection to the original and finally reach the end, beat the game, and get an ending that just makes me say "What?"
So, because this game is supposedly the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time, I play through it hoping to get a glimpse of the greatness of its predecessor and instead spend hours of my life playing a game that has a marginal connection to my favorite game and that I would only rate a 6/10.
That made me angry.

Super SFII Turbo, from the second opponent on. This game hands my ass to me without fail. But I'm a total cheesemaster when it comes to fighting games, so I'm probably just getting what I deserve.
Trying to get Natalya from the train on Goldeneye, 00 Agent mode. She'd always move too slow, and get caught in the blast after exiting the train, no matter how much time I had left. Never figured out how to pass it. Same with the level with the mainframes she operated while you had to protect her. The farthest I got was right at the door to exit the level. And those were the only two 00 Agent levels I had to unlock to get the Egypt level. Kind of makes me mad thinking about it, actually.
The first hour or so of Deadly Towers. It's so maddeningly frustrating for me that I can see why the "worst game ever" title gets associated with it so much. It's fun once you're sufficiently powered up, though.
At the moment, those are the only ones I can think of that really drove me nuts.

After long relentless button pushing, I just gave up on the torture sequence in Metal Gear Solid.
Hahaha. I always hated that, one day I just used my turbo pad and it worked. I played the remake on GC last year and managed to do it fine.
NES Baseball - Yes, it's a crappy game, but one moment pushed me over the edge. I was trailing in the late innings, but had crept closer as the game went on. In a crucial situation in the 8th, I threw an inside slowball to a right-handed batter. He hit a 600' bomb the opposite way. That's absolutely impossible in real life. Inside pitches sometimes get dunked over the 2nd Baseman, but hitting it 600 feet (estimated)? On a 46mph pitch?? I ripped the controller from the deck and smashed it against the wall, then pounded the cart with a hammer. Pics available upon request.
For whatever insane reason, I got another cart of the game and continued to play. I can now beat it with ease, but that one time still burns.
NES Little Ninja Brothers - The hand-to-hand fighting just isn't fair. You have to be positioned perfectly to register a hit, while the enemies just have to be near you. This cart was flung against the wall and caused some collateral damage. My Super Mario poster was ripped, and the box & cart of Nintendo World Cup were crushed.
NES Mike Tyson's Punch Out - After Tyson unloaded a flurry on me to end the bout, I jumped up and screamed obscenities loudly at it. This was way back in the NES heyday, when all games were purchased new at full price. Otherwise, that cart may have been vaporized.

I dunno what the hell was wrong with me that day, but I was getting horribly frustrated at God of War for whatever reason, and I ended up slamming the controller on the ground and then proceeding to bite it (the actual controller, not the wire). Needless to say, I took a break after that. :/ I usually don't get half as angry as that, I'm pretty sure I was just having an off day. LOL

GTA San Andreas The Supply Lines Mission I screamed at the TV when i ran out of fuel right before i got back to the Roof of Zero's RC Shop. :eek 2:
Renegade on the NES or Double Dragon. Any game in which you are in a fight and some gutless shit whacks your ass from behind and you can't do diddly about it. Renegade drove me insane because you would be getting slapped and you just had to stand there until you got knocked down, and when you got back up, you would get slapped around some more. And when you did go down, it took your guy like 10 minutes to decide to get back up again. Funny now, yeah, but not so funny back then.

Castlevania 2 for the NES. I remember being SO stuck in the graveyard and trying to jump up onto an impossible ledge for (literally) days. Eventually I found that the "secret" was to be near a lake in another part of the game and duck for three seconds. The only way you would know this is by reading a villager say, "pray near the lake" (or something like that).. Dude, I was in freakin' elementary school! This "solution" still pisses me off.
What's funny is - after trying to jump onto that other ledge for a few days, I actually did it. But I wasn't meant to be in that area of the game yet, so it proved to be another dead end.
Jak II is infamous for its difficulty. The first game was simple but fun, and it's one of the few adventure games where I bothered to collect everything in the game. But Jak II's developers were terrified of making another "wimpy" game, so they screwed up on the difficulty.
In one mission you have to escape from the docks with lasers and soliders dropping all around you without even a pause -- it's basically like pulling a slot machine over and over until you make it through. Or who can forget flying through city streets on a timer with every random "nick" bringing you closer to a game-ending explosion (and you always start over from the beginning whenever you die -- checkpoints? who needs checkpoints?)
I don't usually get violent with video games, but I probably threw my controller a few times during Jak II. I eventually beat the game, but I felt totally exhausted and violated afterwards.

Some of the stupid levels in some of the GTA games really pissed me off, those atleast come to mind. It wasn't because they were hard, but the games programming just sucked!
Oh and just to brag super monkey ball was easy! lol well maybe I shouldn't go that far but I did unlock and complete all levels in Master mode... the first one mind you, the second one I can honestly say was easy!

Faxanadu- for such crappy collision detection.
Toejam & Earl Xbox, because they had to take a innocent game amazing game and add a bunch of sleazy humor and made the characters act like they're from the hood.
GTA series, because it's so demoralizing.

I've gotten frustrated with plenty of games, but only once did I really get pissed off.
Street Fighter Alpha 3 on Dreamcast. I know SF games are supposed to be challenging at the end, but I've always been pretty good at them. But at the time I was playing this, I hadn't played one in a while, and I was having a hell of a time beating Bison at the end. I kept thinking "the day I can't beat Bison with Chun-Li is the day I quit playing games!"
Finally, I got so pissed I chucked my controller, and I never do that. It hit the wall so hard both VMUs popped out. I got even more mad at myself for doing it 'cuz I was afraid I'd lost all my saves (including my many many hours of PSO), but fortunately they were okay.
And yes, not long after that I did kick Bison's ass. And it felt sooo good. Yatta! LOL
