View Full Version : Biggest fool right here

For the last couple of years, I always stay away from the NES becuase it was an eight bit system, and for some reason, I wasn't able to get into it. Not too long ago I was playing the Coleovision again after five years and I loved it. If I was playing something that's older than the NES itself, I should love it too. So I got Jnes (an emulator) and fired up Gun-Nac (weird shoot 'em up from Compile), and Little Samson (the rare game that everybody loves), and I got hooked on it. Now I can't stop playing the NES! I'm such a fool for advoiding the NES. I advoid games before and when I play them, I love them (Sexy Parodius was the biggest example of it, and I now love the game to death)!
My friend of mine is an Nintendo fanboy and he's now collecting NES games. I'm currently helping him to get the best games for the NES, and so far I help him to get some really good games. He now has Contra, Zanac, Adventure Island, and gods knows how more games I recommended.
I know some good games for the NES, but I really want to know a lot of the great games for the NES (I know just about everything releated to the Genesis). So there's a site here or a list of some of the best games for the NES?
I know games like Rad Racer, Ninja Gaiden series, Lifeforce (wasn't too fond of the NES port, perfer arcade), Gradius River City Ransom, and gods know how many more I know.
Try to help me out when I swim thru the huge pond of NES games to find the classics and advoid the crappy titles. 8-)

Mega Man 2. Don't own a NES without it.
Agreed, though the other Mega Mans are worth hunting down as well, my favorites being 4 and 6.
Other NES picks of mine:
Tetris (probably my favorite game of all time)
Contra
Tecmo Super Bowl
Baseball Stars (if you're into sports, you NEED these two)
the Castlevania series, particularly 2
Dr. Mario
Duck Tales (or really any Disney related Capcom game... Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers, Little Mermaid, Tale Spin, etc.)
Dusty Diamond's All Star Softball
Jackal
Balloon Fight
Karnov
Micro Machines (the best unlicensed game IMO)
Punch Out
Popeye
RC Pro Am
Shadowgate (or Deja Vu or Uninvited... same game engine)
the TMNT series
Wizards and Warriors
Deadly Towers (just kidding... there are a few stinkers :) )
It should go without saying but Zelda 1 and 2 along with the Super Mario Bros. series as well.
Really, you can't go wrong with what the others have said either. These are just some suggestions to get you up and running. There are plenty more I could have added but this was basically what's sitting by my TV right now. :D
Best of luck with your collection. The NES has always and will always be my favorite.

Super Spy Hunter
:puke: Yuck. If I remember correctly that wasn't even a Spy Hunter game, just a rename of a bad Famicom game whos title escapes me at the moment.

Compared to the arcade Spy Hunter 2 (such a travesty that the second arcade game strayed so far from the original), I'd say it's ok, though it didn't have the magic of the original Spy Hunter.

I could be here all day listing awesome NES games, but here's few in my head right now:
Faxanadu
Crystalis
Legacy of the Wizard (HARD)
Batman
Gradius 2 (ok, that's a Famicom-only game, but it looks like it could be an SNES game)
Castlevania 3
Low G Man
Burai Fighter
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom (don't laugh, awesome game...a lot like the shadowgate games in a way)
Metal Gear (starts off hard, gets awesome once you get the pistol)
Abadox (incredible music...but you probably won't ever beat it w/o the invincibility code)
The Guardian Legend
I'll quit while I'm ahead...there's just way too many.
A riddle: What system is better than the NES?
None.

Jnes? No, you want FCE Ultra. Well, check it out, anyway.
Anyhow, some game recommendations:
Isolated Warrior (rather simple, but hey)
Metal Storm
Shadow of the Ninja (Kage in Japan)
Demon Sword (Fudou Myouou Den in Japan, they got the better version)
Zen: Intergalactic Ninja (Haven't played much of it, but another cool scroller with a Zaxxon style perspective, like Isolated Warrior)

Go buy Guardian Legend -- NOW
To my knowledge, this is a sort of sequel to Zanac, and maybe a prequel to Gun-nac??? may be wrong on that
It combines some action adventure with the crazy shooting

Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom (don't laugh, awesome game...a lot like the shadowgate games in a way)
Agreed, that game is high up on my list as well. Years ago when I couldn't find a damn copy anywhere it was one of only three games I ever ordered online from FuncoLand's horribly overpriced game ordering system.
If emulation is your route and you have a decent computer then use NEStopia. If you want to put the testing time in and learn the ins and outs of compiling it on your own, NESterDC v7.1 for the Dreamcast is excellent as well. (Screw NESterDC SE and it's slight compatibility patches for that stupid "30% of the manuals have been scaned and you have to use my compiler" crap)
With a library of over 700 games, there's lots to choose from. Lotsa junk, but lots of great games too. Here are a few of my favorites:
Sports:
Tecmo Bowl
Baseball Stars
Blades of Steel
Bandai Golf
Super Dodge Ball
Punch Out
Puzzle:
Tetris
Adventures of Lolo 1, 2, 3
Dr Mario
RPG:
Final Fantasy
Dragon Warrior 1, 2, 3, 4
Destiny of an Emporer
Maniac Mansion
Shadowgate
Action/RPG:
Legend of Zelda
Zelda II Adventure of Link
Crystalis
Faxanadu
Willow
River City Ransom
Metal Gear
Action/Platformers:
Bionic Commando
Mega Man 2
Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3
Castlevania 1, 2, 3
Ninja Gaiden 1, 2
Shooters:
Contra
1943
Galaga
Gun Nac
Racing:
Rad Racer
RC Pro Am
Micro Machines

The only reason I've stayed away from the NES is because I haven't found one for a good price. The only time I've ever seen one in person it was £30 with no box. It seems to go for that much on eBay as well.
I've already got six NES games, though.

there are so many great games for the nes that making any recomendations without breaking em down into genre would be hard and a bit shortsighted to me. my only advice is to start cheap, avoid some of the more obvious junk (if it's based off PBS show or such) and work your way from there. there are so many great games that even owning over 120 for it myself i still want more because frankly, there's atleast 200 that are that good.
oh, and i havent responded this long because quite honestly the topic name sent me into a fit of the gigles because quite honestly it's been very difficult not to respond with something a bit rude. biggest idiot? nah, biggest idiot would be the person who never owned anything released by nintendo ever. that would be a rather big idiot to me.
