View Full Version : Recommend me some DOS/Win95/98 games!

I recently got my hands on an older laptop with Win 98 and can now finally play a few of my XP-incompatible games properly (Magic the Gathering, World of Xeen, and Wizardry Archives to be specific).
Anyhoo, now that the world of DOS is open to me please recommend some games that would be worth my time searching ebay/garage sales for. I've pretty much downloaded everything at the various "abandonware" sites, but if there's any commercial games I'm missing out on I'd appreciate knowing what they are. :)
(All genres are welcome, btw.)

The Incredible Machine series is not to be missed. It was by Sierra, each level you have an objective to complete using an assortment of machine bits (springs, gears, hamster wheels, baloons). Very unique puzzle game.
On this same note does anyone know where I can get a copy of Flesh Feast by Sega (pc only top down zombie game). I have played the demo more times than I can count.

Lots of good games listed and honestly, I'm hard pressed to think of that many more. I do not know if they are 98 and older only, but.....
Hero's of Might and Magic (all of em)
All 3 Fallout games (yes, tactics included)
7th guest/11th hour
Eye of the Beholder? (archive release much like wizardry)
Funny how you make finding a laptop with 98 sound like you found an oddy2 or a 2600. I say it's funny because that's the same OS I currently use! Maybe one day I'll splurge and get me a laptop with 98 as well. Hell, maybe I'll realy go wild and buy one with ME! Maybe not though....

If you want to go really old school, there was a game I played a LONG time ago. It was called "The Shadows of Yserbius". It was a dungeon crawling game that was also part of a gaming network...It might have been the Imagination Network. Any help anyone? Goodness though, when I was little, that game owned.

Some of these may have already been mentioned, but here's my list:
One Must Fall 2097 (Great 1-on-1 fighter with mechs)
Traffic Department 2192 (Overhead view 360 shooter with great storyline)
God of Thunder (Puzzle game that resembles Zelda a bit)
Ultima IV, V, VI, VII part 1 and 2 (Best RPG series ever)
Wasteland (Classic RPG, Fallout is it's successor)
The Dark Heart of Uukrul (Ingenious RPG that no one has ever heard of)
Dungeon Master (Another classic RPG)
Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 (Both good dungeon crawls with very impressive (for their time) 3D environments)
System Shock 1 & 2 (Great cyberpunk style games)

Activision's Battlezone is my top pick.
My second would be MDK 1.
I'm almost positive this is Window$ 95 compatible... MDK is both DOS and Win 95 compatible, if you can find it.
For DOS, any old LucasArts adventure is nice. My fave is Sam & Max Hit the Road. And Starcraft and any older Civilization game should be necessities for laptops!

Other games:

Dungeon Keeper
Dune 2
I could list games forever but it seems everyone else has done that anyway, so I wont bother. There are far too many amazing PC games to list

I've alsways wanted to play that game, ever since seeing the making of video on the Myst disc. But I never ran into the game in stores or heard anything about it's release. Wikipedia certainly explains why.
For great windows 98 titles though, you really need to play "I Have no Mouth But I Must Scream". It's a fantastic point and click only surpased by the likes of Sanitarium. It's about an omnipotent Mega Computer called AM and after he's brought about the near extinction of the human race he spends eons sustaining the lives of four humans and torturing them mentally and physically for all eternity. The game starts with a contest in which AM promises to let the humans die if they can pass his test, which invloves each of them overcoming and facing their greatest fears.

I came across this site a few months back and I think it could be of great use to you. Of course a lot of the games are full versions so you don't get stuck with shareware or demos to software that companies or teams no longer exist. If they are still around, please purchase the software from them if you wish to keep it.

Awesome game if you can get it to load, it was infamous for EMS and XMS memory problems. It was the game that taught me what a boot disk was. LOL For an entire summer that game was like my job. I'd drag myself to my computer after being up all night previously, load up with contraband, and smuggle it to the prison colonies. LOL
I'm happy to see lots of recommendations for One Must Fall, a terribly underrated game. Has to have one of the coolest main menu screens of all time - with one of the Jaguar robots in it's victory pose among skyscrapers at night while searchlights pan back and forth. We need an OMF movie, the sequel game sucked.
For DOS, any old LucasArts adventure is nice. My fave is Sam & Max Hit the Road.!
They all run fine in modern Windows thanks to ScummVM. :D Heck, most of the games run better under ScummVM than they did originally. Be sure to play Loom (both the 16 color version - most beautiful EGA game ever made, and the 256 color version with full audio) and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
The Last Express (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Express). :D It had problems in XP if I remember correctly.
I've alsways wanted to play that game, ever since seeing the making of video on the Myst disc. But I never ran into the game in stores or heard anything about it's release. Wikipedia certainly explains why.
I remember it being in stores RIGHT when it was released, I saw it at Fry's years and years ago and was kind of like "oh, there that game is." There was also a rerelease not too long ago. The cover of the rerelease has some of the characters on the front. The original release has the locomotive of the train smashing through a barrier (my all time favorite box art). The rerelease can be picked up fairly cheap on eBay, be prepared to pay more for the original - the one I have was from the first shipment that had a strategy guide in the box. It was the game that pretty much killed Broderbund.
Lastly, let us not forget a little gem by Blue Moon Software - SkyRoads, the sequel to a little internal game of theirs called Kosmonaut. Go find it. :)

QOF - awesome topic (especially since I just got my old laptop running right again). Lots of good gaming memories being brought up.
I do have to ask, what speed are you running, and how well does the Magic: The Gathering game work on it? I have it on an older 233, and it runs well, but I remember that the game was pretty bad about playing nice with faster machines. The 233 pretty much only has that game on it, and I'd prefer to just use the 600 for my old game needs.
As for a couple of my favorite older games...the first Roller Coaster Tycoon is IMO the best, the old Hasbro Interactive board games done in a game show style games (Scattergories and Outburst in particular) are wonderful, and You Don't Know Jack (4 aka The Ride is my favorite).
Also, don't forget Scorched Earth and the old Capture the Flag game :)

I know people mentioned the LucasArts games, but I'd like to particularly give a shout out to Full Throttle and Maniac Mansion.
Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye is another good DOS game; I believe the Underdogs has it. The Dig and Grim Fandango are also amazing.
Win98 will also run System Shock 2 and the Thief games as well as SS1, Ultima Underworld, and the other works of genius that sprang from Warren Spector's legacy.
Dark Forces / Dark Forces II (Jedi Knight) are also fairly cool.
The Ultima series is the king of all RPGs ever, anywhere. Quest for Glory is a close second. Planescape: Torment is also up there.
Darkstone is a dungeon hack that is fairly entertaining, but overall mediocre. The old Command & Conquer games deserve a mention.
Master of Orion II.
Ed Oscuro
02-18-2006, 01:30 AM
Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 (Both good dungeon crawls with very impressive (for their time) 3D environments)
Hell, it had a better engine than Wolf 3D...which was inspired by an UU tech demo!
Bio Menace, from Apogee (3D Realms now). Freeware, and fun - if you don't mind key hunts. Cool graphics and mostly awesome music.
Hugo's House of Horrors 1, 2, and 3 still remain some of my favorite adventure games. There's Daleks (in 2), questions about Roy Roger's horse (in 1), deadly bees (in 3), and even some rousing good PC speaker tunage. *beep beep beeeep beep*
Hmm, I'd recommend some FPSes, but I don't know if that's what's wanted.
If you get DN3D you should get Duke 1 and 2 free, though. The release I got (the main one) had 'em. Dunno about Atomic Edition, though. DN3D holds up fairly well, I found...some maps more than others, and it didn't have those "awesome!" moments I remembered. Looking for a copy of Duke Carribbean, myself (seems to be uncommon/rare).
Heretic II, if this machine can run it, is a damn fine third person action game. One of my favorite series right there, with the partial exception of Hexen II (gets pretty brutal in difficulty later on, and early on there's not enough ammo).
I actually have tons of DOS games...not enough time to check them all out, yet.

Can there be none other than Star Control 2? A game that I still play as the Freeware Ur-Quan Masters?
Ah, I'm glad that someone mentioned this one, as it's probably the best star-faring RPG ever... kind of funny to think that the whole thing is kinda based on Space War :) However, you might get more out of the remake that Sanrio mentioned. You can download it entirely for free over here (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/). This remake is (mostly) based on the 3DO version of the game, which had a lot of enhancements, like voice dialog when talking to alien races.
Don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but depending on how old some of the games are that you try, many of them won't play nice with your hardware. Some will play far too fast, and some might just crash entirely. If something doesn't work, you might want to check out this section (http://www.the-underdogs.org/faq2.php#d) of the FAQ at HOTU, which answers a lot of questions. You might also want to check out the forums over at VOGONS (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/), although most of the talk on VOGONS will be about running games under DOSBox, much of it still applies to actual hardware (In fact, this is where I found a fix to a color palette problem I was having with Star Control 2...)

Descent 1, 2, 3
Seconded big time!
I love Descent sooooo much when I was young, I still have the game since it came out in 1996. Today, D1, 2 and 3 are perfectly playable on XP. D3 doesn't need anything, just install and go, but D1 and D2 needs a special program that makes D1 and 2 playable on XP.
http://www.descent2.de/
Download D2X-XL where D2 is installed and play D1 and D2 in full glory. About D1, you have to put all of D1s missions inside the D2 missions folder in order to play D1 in D2X-XL. This program makes D1 and D2 playable thru XP plus with A LOT of improvements and fixes which makes you happy.

I'm glad to see someone's already mentioned Under A Killing Moon. Any of the games with Tex Murphy in are definitely worth a look if you like adventure games. Blade Runner (which again has been mentioned lots) is also rather wonderful thanks to the whole random thing.
Broken Sword 2 still looks wonderful and is a great laugh. Space Quest 5 doesn't look quite as hot, but it's still a damn fun game to play. Discworld Noir is pretty fun too.
I always found Die By The Sword to be a fun hack and slash sort of game. Hardwar is an excellent combat/trade sim.. thing. The Nomad Soul is a pretty neat mash up of genres. There's an action RPG called Silver which is pretty ok too.
Transport Tycoon will probably rule your life, as will Civ II if you let them!

this thread has got me interested. In all this stuff...
I just acquired an old PC from my work (they were giving them away) with everything dumped. it has a pentium!!!500 128meg ram, a 10, 13.2, or 20 gig harddrive, I don't know which, and a 54x cdrom and 3.5" floppy drive.
I decided I should install dos and a dos based windows system (for games and dev tools). question is what versions of DOS/windows should I install? I'm sure there is a definite way to go for DOS, but as far as windows, I don't really see the diff between 95 and 98. any suggestions?
don't mean to steal the thread, just thought my questions were related enough to not start a new one. :embarrassed:

Windows 95 and 98 use something like DOS 7.0. It is not ideal for running DOS games; you will need to use a program like DOSBox to really get DOS games to run reliably (with sound and everything) under Windows 95 / 98. But you can run 95 / 98 games in it.
If you want to use MS-DOS and Windows 3.1, then there is no question: MSDOS 6.22 is the one. That OS rocked the casbah in the golden era of gaming.

DOSBox is not required if you're using the DOS that comes with Win95 and 98, I ran all my old DOS games (and even older stuff) on DOS 7.0, with sound and everything. Shouldn't really make a difference for 99% of the games. Besides, DOSBox on such an old PC wouldn't really work ;)
I'd recommend using Win98, it's a bit more stable.

That's probably because The Dig was the second PC game I played, so I've got some fond memories of it ;) I liked how it's a little more "mature" than the other Lucas Arts adventures. Not that the other games are bad though of course :)

Alone in the Dark - oldschool survival horror goodness.
Oh man, I totally second the original Alone... This game blows RE out of the water, IMO. (well, it did back then..) And it was one of the first 3-D games I remember playing.
I also second the people who voted on any of the Descent games, but my faves were always 2 and 3. 1 just doesn't pack the graphical punches the later 2 had.
And while alot of people didn't like them, I liked the 2-D GTA series. And I forgot to suggest Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall or Arena, and Tempest 2000 or Tempest X (whatever the PC version was called)
And just to be nice, here's a link for ES: Arena since it's a freebie.

I decided I should install dos and a dos based windows system (for games and dev tools). question is what versions of DOS/windows should I install? I'm sure there is a definite way to go for DOS, but as far as windows, I don't really see the diff between 95 and 98. any suggestions?
I say 98 SE since you can run the most windows application stuff and emulators yet can still easily boot into straight DOS. I also have good DOS game support in Win98 SE, you don't need DOS Box as robotriot said.
I'm glad to see someone's already mentioned Under A Killing Moon. Any of the games with Tex Murphy in are definitely worth a look if you like adventure games.
Agreed, I spent months playing Mean Streets years and years ago. I just liked to see a game set where I lived. LOL

Awesome, I was currious if anyone had mods to fix some of the older DOS games that crash due to the video and sound drivers of systems running under newer generations of Windows. I need to set up one of my older 400Mhz machines to use 3.1x or 98SE to have the great old gameplay again.

any good places to get 98 SE online for free?
oh, my recommendations for dos games are
stunts
descent
commander keen
doom
wolfenstein
chips challenge
test drive 3
abrams tank
street rod 1 and 2
jetfighter II
I like flight sims alot. I have a bunch on my dad's computer. I should go steal all of them back.
another game I like is...I want to say qbert, but its not qbert. its a puzzle game with a similar name that is like chips challenge, and plays nutcracker music in the background. I had a shareware version of it but loved it. shareware...those were the days. I also had "vinyl goddess from mars" but i could never get it to load
