What is the absolute coolest thing you ever got for free? Wether it be games, a console, controllers, promotional item, store window display, etc..
I just got mine 2 weeks ago. I inhereted my friends pre-dual shock PS1 with a memory card and no games, simply because he's moving to California. I've been buying games for this thing like mad. I even managed to find a copy of Castlevania: SotN for $30. :D
Second place would go to my Crazy Taxi 2 standee that I grabbed back when I worked at Babbages. There was also a Shenmue one that also came with a huge vinyl sticker that looked like replacement sideart for an arcade cabinet, but no one took it.
Looking back, I wish I did. That giant sticker was just sweet. :(

Mine would have to be the creator signed copy of COD 2 that I won last week from Gamespot.

well.. i got final fantasy 7 (pal) for free from my uncle, along with 5 other games.. my <almost friend>'s dad gave me a nes with two controllers, mario 1 to 3 and a flintstones game, all in perfect condition for free.
i got alot of consoles and accessories for free (atari 2600, intellivision, atari 7800, bunch of controllers and games), but i paid $70 shipping for it all, so that only half counts..
i've gotten commodore amigas for free, one had a 1084S monitor with it, plus mouse, flight stick, and ram expansion card.
i love my moving wario ware twisted counter display which i got from secret santa this year (thanks Cirrus!).
my pal master system 1 was free, along with about 8 games, but needed cleaning up a bit, the console is perfect now.
i got a sega saturn for the price of shipping..
i think every master system game i have, cept for two (both fantasy zone somehow), i got for free, i have 22 with cases, two loose.
i just got arcade classics 1-5 for gameboy for free..
got a fruity coloured n64 modded to be green and blue (combined parts with another n64) for free, along with 5 games and two controllers.
got a ddr pad (soft pad) for free, somehow it's capable of enough accuracy to AA heavy songs.. i know of no others which are, unfortunately it has no O button, so you have to play vs and set things up with the other player controller using ps2 versions..
4 DS lanyards, and a nintendogs one, a DS counter strip, a nintendogs dog..
probably a bunch of crap i forget..
i listed way too much stuff, you tell me what is worth most out of those..

Last fall, my buddy surprised me with a stack of 7-8 NES games and 2 SNES games. Turns out his sister moved into a new apartment and the prior tenants FLED for whatever reason. Said they could take anything that was left that they wanted. He got the games, which meant I did. Included were:
NES - Mega Man, Super Spike V'Ball, Tecmo Super Bowl, Dragon's Lair, Gilligan's Island and 2 or 3 others I can't remember but all were in damn near mint condition.
SNES - Mega Man X and I think Street Fighter II.
Also when I first started collecting during my freshman year at college, the guys down the hall had a box of about 20 games. I went down there to borrow 1 or 2, and they said to take the whole box. They also said they'd get it before the end of the semester, which they didn't. Their loss, my gain. :)

In 2004, a friend of mine in Texas gave me a loose Super Mario RPG for helping him get some NES games he wanted. It wasn't a trade; he was going to pay me back for the games, and a couple days before he mailed the money order, he found the SMRPG cheap at a yard sale and decided to ship it with the money order since he already had a copy and knew I was looking for it. That was pretty sweet. :D

Once a bought a Commodore C16 on a flea-market and i got a vectrex for free with it (including 7 games + some overlays) because the guy selling it thought it was the monitor.
It was pretty weird. I offer the guy EUR 10,- for the C16 + some tapes etc. Pick up the box and start walking away, the guy calls me back and tells me i am forgetting the monitor... I go what? monitor? huh? and my jaw almost drops to the floor when he dives below the table and pulls a vectrex from underneath and hands it over to me... The funny thing was that i happily went on my way (d'oh) when 10 minutes later the guy's son comes after me and hands me a small box with a bunch of games and overlays ("Sir, you forgot to take the games with you"). @_@

Turbo Grafx, CD Add-on, Turbo Duo, accessories, system cards and about 25 games including Y's I/II - III, Exile Wicked Phenomenon, various shooters, etc. Got them from a co-worker who was moving to California and cleaning house about 7 years ago. He told me I owed him $100. Did not have it that day, so he said he would send me his new address and I could just mail it to him. Never sent me the new address. Ran into him visiting about 2 years later and he said he had forgotten all about it and said it was a gift. I insisted on giving him the money but to no avail (I had written him a glowing recommendation and that was thanks enough).
Not until 3 years ago did I realize what he had actually given me. Thank you Dave!

This stuff was given to me by a friend for no reason other than he knew I'm into Megadrive stuff.

I already had 7 of them, and had only recently bought 5 of them. Then of the 7 new ones, 5 were sports games. Oh, well. It was free, so I can't complain.

Off the top of my head, probably a complete (sealed) copy of Ballistic on NUON. I got it from a nice trader here on DP. I was so happy because I had just got into NUON and it is rough getting NUON games these days...even on ebay.

Anyway, for my brithday last year, a friend of mine gave me a Genesis/Megadrive with one controller, and two games (Sonic 1 and 2). That started my Genesis collection and so far I have over 20+ games (five imports).
Then it was also the time I got a free Sega Saturn mod-chip from some guy on the net.

I have gotten a LOT of games and systems as gifts, but here are some stuff I was lucky to get free (a few of which I got in an interesting way)
Genesis: for some reason, in the 2 weeks I worked at GameStop back in '01, I went in one day and there was a Genesis (2 model) in the wastebasket. I inquired why it was thrown out, was it broken? No one knew. So I asked if I could dig it out and test it and keep it if it worked. They shrugged and I took the console out of the trash and bought an AC Adaptor, a controller and Columns (the RF switch to my long-lost Genesis was in a drawer at home so I was set). It worked FINE. Free Genesis!
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat: I'm used to getting promo swag from the Nintendo rep since I work at Toys R Us. But one day, he came in to do a demo/contest with DK Jungle Beat. He forgot his copy at home so bought a copy off of us. When he was cleaning up to leave, he handed me the copy he had bought. He said he had his free Nintendo-issued copy at home so didn't need it. It wasn't like he could return it to the store! I was flabbergasted. I kept repeating "Geoff, are you sure?! It's a $40 game!" But he insisted. I was sooooo grateful. That's why I argue to this day that I'm the Nintendo rep's favorite (My TRU is always favored over my boyfriend's GameStop LOL)
Gitaroo Man: Sure, it's a reprint, but even the reprints are elusive and this game is AMAAAAZING! It was a 21st b-day present from my boyfriend. He was ready to buy it for himself but I was like "Yknow...today's my birthday" and he felt guilty and generous so he bought it for me. I returned the favor and got him a copy for X-Mas.
Famicon GameBoy Micro: A Christmas present from my boyfriend. Ever since the Micro was announced, I was on the fence about it. Sure it's a nintendo product, it's a gameboy, but it's not backwards compatible! But I saw the Famicom edition and I said "Well, someday I'll import that, cuz it's cool looking and collectible." Then Nintendo decided to be cool and release it in America. When I saw GameStop got them in, I called my boyfriend and said "I know what you can get me for Christmas!" (can you see how manipulative I am?! LMAO)
Mega Man 2 and 6 for NES: The Mega Man games are like $20-$25 each (at least at GameZone). These I stole from my friend. I didn't mean to, I was borrowing them from him, then we stopped talking for 6 months (long story) and I neglected to give them back. He totally forgot about them, and he's not going to miss them. His NES is shoved in the back of his closet. I also have his Yoshi.
Some of the other systems I've gotten as Christmas gifts were: N64, PS2, and PSP. I've gotten so many games as gifts from family, friends and my boyfriend that I won't even list them all.
I also have a LOT of different promo stuff from work. Like I said above, I'm the Nintendo rep's favorite, so I've gotten more stuff than everyone at GameStop combined, including a Nintendogs plush that was supposed to be reserved ONLY for GameStop MANAGERS. Well, it's not just me who's favored, a couple of my coworkers also got their own Nintendogs. My boyfriend's store only got one plush and his manager ended up keeping it all to himself. I've also gotten GameCube and XBox kiosk demo disks, shirts, buttons, TONS of lanyards, a Nintendo water bottle (that my manager gave me) a PlayStation clock (that I traded a regular clock with another manager for) pens, etc.
Do you notice a trend between me and my boyfriend? He also got me a GameCube, Super Mario Sunshine and a 59 block memory card for our 2nd X-mas together. In the 5 years we've been together, we have gotten each other games and systems for birthday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, anniversaries, even Easter. Hey, the couple that plays together, stays together.

The only thing I got for free videogame related (not counting x-mas/birthday gifts) is some old PC games. Me and a friend was interviewing a local computer business and at the end we asked if we could get free games hehe. First they just looked at us, but gave us 2 or 3 :) Conspiracy was one of the games and another was some flight game, ww2 style, simulator maybe, dont remember. It was on floppies atlest.
I also won a SNES game (Double Dragon VS Battletoads) in a magazine.
